, Shri Hari:. [Bhaj] Nitai-Gaur Radheshyam [Chant] Harekrishna Hareram Mr. Mr. Nivasacharya

He was gentle handsome and charming with cow power I offer my obeisances to that wise abode of the goddess of fortune followed by the cowherd men

Acharya Shree Niwas Ji’s respected Pitridev Shree Chaitanya Das lived in a village named Chakandi under Burdwan district. He was one of the ardent devotees of Sri Chaitanyadev. Actually his name was Gangadhar Bhattacharya, but people started calling him ‘Chaitanya Das’ because of the abundance of love for Sri Chaitanya. When Mahaprabhu left home and came to Katwa to take sannyas-initiation at Keshav Bharti’s place, many people had come there for his darshan. Bhattacharya Gangadharji was also among those incoming people. He had seen this heart-wrenching scene with his own eyes. That’s all, in the same grief, he is like a madman, O Chaitanya! Hey Chaitanya! Started roaming around saying, since then he started being called by the name of Chaitanyadas!

God’s will is very strong. In old age, Chaitanya Das ji had a desire to see the face of the child. He had been married long back, his wife Shri Laxmipriya was very devoted to her husband, a sati-saadhvi woman. She was not upset to see her husband distracted from worldly matters. She considered her happiness only in the happiness of her husband. In this old age, the couple longed to see their son. Both husband and wife went to Puri to see Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu blessed that ‘your son will have a part of our power in him, he will be our second deity.’ Mahaprabhu’s boon could have been limited otherwise. In the second year, Lakshmipriya gave birth to a son in Chakandi. The parents named him Srinivasa. The same Srinivasa later became very famous among the devotees by the name of Srinivasacharya.

Sri Nivas seemed to be intelligent, gentle, gentle and brilliant since childhood. At the tender age of 17-18, he had become well versed in grammar, poetry and rhetoric. His maternal grandfather was in Jajigram, his maternal grandfather Shri Balramacharya was also a great devotee and a true Vaishnava. His mother was very devoted and had faith in Chaitanya’s feet. Right from his childhood, he had made his beloved son Shri Niwas memorize the divine pastimes. The frozen impression of childhood in the child’s heart becomes indelible forever. The charming idol of Chaitanya got absorbed in the heart of Shri Niwas. They began to yearn for the darshan of Chaitanya’s feet.

One day he was going to his native Jaji village, on the way he met Mr. Narhari Sarkar, a resident of Srihatt. Sarkar Mahasaya was an ardent devotee of Mahaprabhu and he was famous as ‘Sarkar Thakur’ among Gaur-devotees. He was highly favored by Pandit Goswami [1]. They loved him very much.

Mr. Niwas had heard about Sarkar Thakur’s fame, but he had never had the fortune of seeing him till date. Here Thakur Sarkar had also heard the praise of the extraordinary talent and devotion of Lord Shri Niwas and they were eager to see that promising child. Suddenly both of them met on the way. Shri Niwas ji bowed down at the feet of Sarkar Thakur with reverence and devotion. And Sarkar Thakur gave him a love hug and blessed him with the love of God. After getting the blessings of that great man, Srinivasa returned to his family and started listening to Mahaprabhu’s pastimes with great interest from his father. One by one he learned the brief characteristics of all the intimate devotees of the Lord. The speed of time is strange, Chaitanyadas ji started getting fever and in that fever he left this Asar world and became a resident of Vaikuntha. Srinivasa has now become fatherless. Laxmipriya started crying day and night in mourning for her husband.

Shri Niwas ji’s maternal grandfather Shri Balramacharya had no children, he was the sole heir of his entire property, so he started living in Jaji village with his mother. He had a desire again and again to leave everything and take refuge in the feet of Sri Chaitanya, but he could not do so because of the bondage of his loving mother, but once he walked to Puri, his visions would satisfy his eyes. See, this was his strong lust. He was highly respected in the devotees of Jaji village. His fame had spread far and wide in this short period itself. Therefore, he expressed his wish on Sarkar Thakur. Expressing happiness, Sarkar Thakur said – ‘You must go to Puri and see the feet of Sri Chaitanya. I will get you a man with you.’ Saying this he got a man with him and he went towards Puri with him.

Deeply immersed in the love of Sri Chaitanyadev, he used to keep thinking many things that ‘I will go to the feet of Sri Chaitanya and express my devotion towards him in this way. One day I will make them with my own hands and give them alms.’ Due to the fervent yearning to see the feet of Sri Chaitanya, such feelings were rising in his mind that on the way he heard a very heart-wrenching news. ‘The longing for whose darshan we are going to Puri, they have finished their pastimes. Chaitanyadev left this mortal body and went to his eternal abode. On hearing this news, his heart burst, he fainted and fell on the earth. After a long delay, he regained consciousness, then with a sad heart, he went ahead crying only for the sake of seeing Sri Chaitanya’s Leela Sthali.

Going to Puri, he saw that the whole city without Gauranga remained blissful like a poor and widowed woman. All Gaur-devotees are suffering like a hot fish in separation from Gaur. Gaur had ordered him to go to Gadadhara Pandita in his dream itself.

He used to listen to the fame of Pandit Goswami before. In Puri, inquiring about Gadadhar Goswami’s address, he reached his ashram. There he saw Pandit Goswami sitting restlessly in the pain of separation. Pandit Goswami had become deranged in Chaitanya-Virah. Tears were continuously flowing from both his eyes. Shri Niwas ji fell at his feet saying ‘Ha Chaitanya!’ Pandit Goswami could not see Shri Niwas ji because he was full of tears. He said in a very compassionate voice – ‘Brother! Who are you ? By reciting this melodious name, you have re-infused strength in my weak organs. Today I feel a lot of peace in my heart due to these melodious words of yours. You are not Shri Niwas are you? Shri Niwas ji tied the anklets of both the hands and said – ‘ Lord! The name of this wretched unfortunate is Shree Niwas. Swamin! You remember the name of this humble pauper, Lord! I am very unfortunate that in this life I could not see the feet of Sri Chaitanya. If Mahaprabhu had not ordered me in the dream, I would have resolved to immerse my life at that very moment. What is the use of this life without the darshan of the living feet?

Pandit Goswami got up and hugged Shri Niwas ji and slowly started moving his cool loving lotus on his tender body. Srinivasa ji’s whole body was thrilled by his love-touch. Then with impatience Pandit Goswami said to Karunkanth – ‘Srinivasa! Now I too cannot live much longer. My life is suffering in separation from Gaur. I would have ended these lives by jumping into the sea on the same day, but it was the command of the Lord that I should teach you Shrimad Bhagwat. My condition is no longer teachable, but Mahaprabhu’s orders are obeyable. The Lord has ordered you to go to Vrindavan and study the scriptures of Roop-Sanatan. They want to spread Bhakti through you in Gaud Desh. You have come now, let me obey the orders of the Lord. Before this, you should visit all the famous Gaur-devotees of Puri.’ Pandit Goswami made one of his men accompany Shri Niwas ji. Along with him, while visiting Shri Jagannath ji, he went to see devotees like Sarvabhaum Bhattacharya, Rai Ramanand etc. Everyone showed affection on him like a son. After leaving all this, this devotee then went to visit Haridas ji’s tomb. Remembering Haridas ji’s honesty and his tolerance there, he fainted and kept rolling in the dust there shedding tears for hours. After visiting all the places of Sri Chaitanya’s pastimes, he again returned to Pandit Goswami. Then Gadadhar ji made him eat Mahaprasad. After getting well after the meal, he inquired about the lesson of Shrimad Bhagwat.

Water was continuously flowing from the eyes of Gadadhara Goswami. His tears would continue to flow all the time while eating, drinking, reading and writing. With great difficulty, he gave the book to Shri Niwas ji and started reading it. Mr. Niwas saw that not a single letter of the book could be read properly. All the pages are drenched with the tears of Pandit Goswami’s eyes. Due to continuous tears, all the letters of the book have been erased and the pages have become black. Mr. Niwas expressed his inability to read it.

Then Gadadhar Goswami said – ‘Shri Niwas! Now don’t have any special hope for my survival. The world seems empty to me. Oh ! How can I live where there is no attention? My soul is longing for sight. If you want to study, then go to Gaur today itself. Narhari Sarkar has a new book written by my hand, bring it. It is quite possible that I can teach you. Mr. Niwas understood that Pandit Goswami’s body could not survive for long. At the same time, he started from near Sarkar Thakur to bring pothi. After coming to Shrihatt, he told all the incidents to Sarkar Thakur and he quickly left for Puri with the pothi.

After leaving Jaganmata Vishnupriya ji, he went to Shantipur to see Advaitacharya’s birthplace. From there, reached Nityanand ji’s house in Khardhad. There Avdhoot’s wife Mrs. Jahnavi Devi showed immense love to him and kept him in her house for many days. After worshiping the feet of both those mothers, he went to visit Goswami Abhiramdas ji of Khanakul Krishna Nagar. He allowed him to go to Vrindavan and study devotional texts. Obeying her orders, he took permission from his mother and reached Vrindavan via Kashi-Prayag. There Jiva Goswami felicitated him. It was he who got him mantra initiation from Gopal Bhatt. Staying in Vrindavan, he started studying devotional scriptures made by Shrirup and Sanatan Adi Goswamis. There he met Narottamdas ji and Shyamanand ji and with them he started studying the books of Goswamis.

When Shri Jiva Goswami ji understood that all these three have become worthy, all three are brilliant, meritorious and influential, then he sent them to spread devotion in Goddesh. Gave the title of ‘Thakur’ to Narottamdas ji and Acharya to Shri Niwas ji. Without devotional books, the path of devotion cannot be properly propagated. Therefore, Jiva Goswami sent many scriptures with them after binding them in oilcloth and keeping them in many safe boxes and loading them in a bullock cart. Ten armed soldiers were also given along with them for protection. After paying obeisance at the feet of their Acharyas and devotees, all the three brilliant youths started going towards Gaudesh via Kashi-Prayag.

On the way, a small capital named Van Vishnupur falls under Bankuda district, after reaching there the dacoits snatched all their chests and killed them all. This caused immense pain to everyone. In fact, the ruler of that state, King Veerhammir used to encourage the dacoits and he had looted that vehicle thinking it as money. Saddened by the looting of the books, Shri Niwas said to Shyamanand and Narottam Thakur – ‘You people go to your respective places and propagate the path of devotion by obeying the orders of Acharya’s feet. I will either return after getting the books or I will die somewhere here.’ After much talking and listening, both of them went ahead.

Srinivas ji started searching for books by roaming around in Vanvishnupur. By chance, he entered the Raj Sabha. King Veerhammir was a great lover of Shrimad Bhagwat, Katha used to take place daily in his assembly. One day, seeing the storyteller Raj-Pandit making impure meaning, he interrupted him, then the king with curiosity, looking at his soiled clothes, asked him to interpret it. Just what was there then, they started giving unique meanings to the same verse in different ways with the help of various tricks and evidence of scriptures. All the listeners were mesmerized by seeing his great erudition. The king bowed at his feet. On being asked, he told all his stories. Then the king took him inside with tearful eyes and fell at his feet and said – ‘I am the robber who looted your books. These are your books kept as they are.’ After finding all the things given by Shri Jiva Goswami safe, he started shedding tears out of love. He bowed down to those books with devotion and became very happy thinking that his hard work was successful. From the same day the king gave up that heinous deed and became his mantra disciple.

After rescuing the king of Vanvishnupur, he again came to Jazigram to visit his mother. After a long time, there was no place for the loving mother’s happiness to get her beloved son, she started crying out of love. Acharya Shree Niwas now stayed there and started preaching the path of Bhakti. There was charm in his speech, he was sharp on his face, all Vaishnavas used to respect him a lot. These respected leaders of Vaishnavism were considered. At the age of forty-nine, he got married for the first time and after a few days got married for the second time. In this way, even after getting married twice, he started living like a lonely person. In between, he had come to Vrindavan once again for the darshan of his Gurudev, by then his Guru Shri Gopal Bhatt had gone to Vaikunthavas. After staying in Vrindavan for a few days, he again came to Gaudesh and started campaigning.

The king of Vanvishnupur had built a separate building for his residence. Sometimes they used to go and live there. In the end, you went to Shri Vrindavandham thinking it to be the end of your stage and did not return from there to Gaudesh. His virtuous supernatural body merged with the holy particles of Vrindavan land. He, the most respected Acharya of Vaishnavas, by his unique devotion and sacrificial attitude, presented an ultimate ideal for the Vaishnavas of Pravritti Paksha.
