नाचती गाती गोपियाँ लौट रही थीं नन्दालय से ।

पूतना देख रही है ।

“धन्य हो गया ये गोकुल ……….आज छ दिन हो गए हैं यशोदा के लाला हुये ……….पर उत्सव अभी भी चल ही रहा है ………कितनी उदार हैं हमारी बृजरानी……….अरी ! लाला कितना सुन्दर है ! दूसरी गोपी तुरन्त कह रही थी………..पूतना इन सबकी बातें सुन रही है ।

पता है ……..बृजरानी नें मुझे मोतियों का हार दिया है ….देख !

दे तो मुझे भी रही थीं पर मैने नही लिया ! दूसरी गोपी नें कहा ।

क्यों ? फिर बधाई में तेनें क्या माँगा ? पहली गोपी नें पूछा ।

मैने तो कह दिया ……..मुझे ये सब नही …….मुझे तो अपनें लाला का मुख दिखा दो ! पहले तो मना किया बृजरानी नें ……पर बाद में मुझे लेकर गयीं पालनें के पास ……………आहा ! सखी !

क्या सुन्दरता ! माखन में मानों नीला रँग मिला हो ……ऐसा देह है बृजरानी के लाला का……..चंचल नयन………उसनें मुझे देखा……अपनें नन्हे पाँव पटके …….मैं तो मन्त्र मुग्ध हो गयी ….सबकुछ भूल गयी थी , सच ! अद्भुत बालक जाया है बृजरानी नें ।

पूतना सुन रही है गोपियों की बातें ।

सुनिये !

पूतना नें गोपियों को रोका ।

हाँ ………..गोपियाँ रुकीं ।

ये नन्दालय कहाँ है ? पूतना नें पूछा ।

क्यों ? नयी आई हो ? क्या गोकुल की नही हो ?

गोपियों ने प्रश्नों की झड़ी लगा दी ।

कहाँ की हो ? बड़ी सुन्दर हो ? यशोदा की बहन लगती हो ?

ओह ! उसके लाला हुआ है इसलिये आयी हो………कुछ लाई हो ? खिलौनें ? अच्छा दिखाओगी, क्या लाई हो ?

प्रश्न इतनें कर दिए कि पूतना तो घबडा गयी …………..

तुम भी ना !

एक गोपी, बूढी बड़ी थी. उसनें पहले तो गोपियों को टोक कर चुप कराया……फिर आगे बढ़कर कहा , पूतना से बोली ……जाओ ! सीधे जाओ……..दूध दही की कीच मची है …..हल्ला हो रहा है ….लोग लुगाई सब नाच रहे हैं………..जाओ ! बस वही है नन्दालय ।

पूतना गयी ………………

भीड़ थी लोग नाच गा रहे थे वहाँ…….धूम मची थी उत्सव की ।

आज छठी उत्सव मनाया जा रहा था ……..बृजरानी का लाला आज छ दिन का जो हो गया था ।

पूतना नें देखा …….भीड़ बहुत है ………..और मुझे जाना है यशोदा के अन्तःपुर में………वहाँ तक कैसे जाऊँ ।

पर जाना तो है ……..पूतना चली भीड़ के पास ……….

पर पूतना को देखते ही भीड़ छंटनें लगी……….क्यों की ये इतनी बन ठन के जो आई थी ………..सुन्दर- अतिसुन्दर रूप जो इसनें बनाया था ……..गोपों नें रास्ता दे दिया पूतना को ………..

नाचना गाना सब रुक गया ग्वालों का …………

“बड़ी सुन्दर है ये” ………एक नें दूसरे के कान में कहा ।

बृजरानी के पीहर की लग रही है…………देखो तो !

ग्वाले सब देख रहे हैं पूतना को………..पर पूतना सीधे गयी ।

यशोदा जी रोहिणी ये दोनों ही बैठी थीं पालनें के पास में ।

पूतना को जैसे ही यशोदा जी नें देखा …….उठ गयीं ।

कौन हो ? उठते हुए पूछा …….रोहिणी भी उठीं ।

मैं ? मैं मथुरा से आयी हूँ………..पण्डितानी हूँ……….पूतना इतना बोलकर चुप हो गयी ।

क्यों आयी हो ? बृजरानी नें पूछा ।

क्यों आयी हो ? क्या तुम्हारे लाला नही हुआ ? मैने सुना कि तुमनें एक लाला को जन्म दिया है …….और वो बहुत सुन्दर है ।

हाँ ……..लाला हुआ है ………..यशोदा जी नें कहा ।

तो दिखाओगी नही ? ब्राह्मणी हूँ , क्या मेरा आशीष नही लोगी ?

वैसे – मेरा आशीष फलता बहुत है ……..पूतना आँखें मटका रही थी ।

हाँ हाँ…..क्यों नही ……..मेरे बालक को तुम पण्डित- पण्डितानियों के ही आशीष की जरूरत है ………..खूब दो मेरे लाल को आशीष ।

ये रहा मेरा लाला ………ये कहते हुये पालनें की ओर बृजरानी नें पूतना को दिखाया ………….मैं तुम्हारे लिये दूध मंगाती हूँ………रोहिणी ! पण्डितानी के लिये दूध ला दो ।

जीजी ! अभी लाई ……..रोहिणी गयी दूध लेनें ।

ओह ! ये है तुम्हारा लाला ! पालनें में देखा पूतना नें कन्हैया को ।

कन्हैया नें टेढ़ी नजर से पूतना को देखा ……………

फिर तुरन्त अपनें नेत्रों को बन्द कर लिया ।

मैं दूध नही पीऊँगी ……..क्या छाँछ ला सकती हो ?

पूतना नें यशोदा जी को कहा ।

हाँ …हाँ ………मैं लेकर आती हूँ छाँछ ……………यशोदा जी इस बार स्वयं गयीं पूतना के लिये छाँछ लेनें ………….

पर इसे छाँछ पीना कहाँ था …….ये तो एकान्त चाहती थी ……ताकि अपना स्तन कन्हैया के मुख में दे सके ……उद्धव बोले ।

पर उद्धव ! कन्हैया नें नेत्र बन्द क्यों किये ?

पूतना को देखकर नेत्रों को बन्द करनें का कारण क्या था ?

चपलता ! बालक की अपनी एक चपलता होती है …….उद्धव नें कहा ।

पर तात ! महत्पुरुषों नें इसपर बहुत कुछ कहा है …………

किसी नें कहा………..कन्हैया के नेत्रों में सूर्य चन्द्र का वास है …….तो सूर्य चन्द्र नें इस पापात्मा पूतना को देखना न चाहा ….और पलकों से स्वयं को ढँक लिया ।

तात ! किसी नें कहा ……..कन्हैया के पास बिना पुण्य के कौन आएगा ……पर पूतना का पुण्य तो शून्य है …..है ही नही ……..किन्तु पूर्वजन्मों में कोई पुण्य हो ………ऐसा विचार कर कन्हैया उसके पूर्व जन्मों को देख रहे हों ……….नेत्रों को बन्द करके ।

हँसे उद्धव …………कन्हैया नें सोचा ………..विष तो हम पीयेंगे नही …….क्यों न महादेव को कहा जाए ……….क्यों की उनको विष का अभ्यास है ………..ऐसा विचार कर आँखें बन्दकर के महादेव का ध्यान कर रहे हैं कन्हैया ……..और उन्हें बुला रहे हैं…….कि आओ ……विष आप पीयो दूध हम पीयेंगे ………..तात ! विदुर जी ! इसलिये कन्हैया नें अपनें नेत्रों को बन्द किया ।

ये सुनकर विदुर जी बहुत हँसे …………साथ में उद्धव भी हँसे जा रहे थे …………इसलिये कन्हैया नें अपनें नेत्रों को बन्द किया ।

लाला कहाँ है ? एकाएक चीखीं बृजरानी ।

रोहिणी भी दौड़ीं………..

पर लाला पालनें में नही है लाला……..वह ब्राह्मणी भी नही है ……रोहणी ! कहाँ गयी वो ? यशुमति की आवाज सुनते ही दास दासियाँ दौड़ीं ……….गोपियाँ और गोप सब दौड़ पड़े थे ।

पागलों की तरह सब दौड़ रहे थे इधर उधर…….लाला कहाँ है ? सबके मुख में यही प्रश्न था………

गोपियाँ बृजरानी को सांत्वना दे रही थीं…….आप शान्त होइये पहले …….बताइये ! कौन आया था आपके महल में ?

“पण्डितानी” कह रही थी वो अपनें आपको…….मथुरा से आयी हूँ….. बता रही थी…..दूध लेनें रोहिणी गयी ……फिर मुझे कहा उसनें कि “मैं छाँछ लुंगी”…….मुझे क्या पता था कि ऐसा हो जाएगा……..मैं क्यों गयी ! हे भगवान ! घबराहट बढ़ती ही जा रही थी बृजरानी की ।

नेत्रों से अश्रु गिरनें लगे थे …………………

आप ऐसे किसी पर भी कैसे विश्वास कर सकती हैं……….

कहनें के लिये गोपियाँ ये भी कह रही थीं ।

अरे ! मुझे क्या पता था ……………सुनो ! उधर देखो तो ………..शायद उधर मेरा लाला हो ……..सब दासियाँ यशुमति जिधर कह रही थीं उधर देखनें लगीं थीं ।

उद्धव ! हुआ क्या था ? पूतना नें क्या किया कन्हैया के साथ ?

वो कहाँ ले गई कन्हैया को ? क्या मथुरा ले गयी ?

विदुर जी नें उद्धव से प्रश्न किया ।

नही तात विदुर जी ! मथुरा कहाँ से ले जाती वो ……..वो तो अच्छे से चंगुल में फंस चुकी थी कन्हैया के ……..और मैने आपको कहा ही है ….जिसे ये पकड़ लेता है छोड़ता कहाँ है ।

तात विदुर जी ! बृजरानी के जानें के बाद …….पूतना पालनें के पास आयी थी……उसनें ध्यान से देखा ……..आलस से भरे हुए थे कन्हैया………क्यों की दूध अभी पिला कर ही गयीं थीं यशोदा मैया …….इसलिये आलस आरहा था उन्हें ।

पूतना नें इधर उधर देखा……और झट् से उठा लिया था कन्हैया को ।

अस्फुटित दो कमल कली के समान उनके गोल गोल से रसीले ओठ बन्द थे …….वो कुछ देर तो उन अधरों को देखती रही……..पर फिर उसनें सोचा समय को इस तरह बिताना उचित नही है………….कोई आगया तो ? यशोदा ही आगयी तो ?

तुरन्त उसनें अपना वक्ष खोला …….और स्तन कन्हैया के मुख में दिया …………मुख बन्द थे …….कन्हैया खोल नही रहे थे ………क्यों की उनका पेट भरा हुआ था ………..पर जबरदस्ती पूतना नें अपना स्तन कन्हाई के मुख में दिया ……अब दे दिया …… इस पर कन्हैया को गुस्सा आया ………….दाँत अभी निकले नही हैं……….ओठ से ही पान करनें लगे स्तन को ……..पूतना हँस पड़ी ….उसे अच्छा लगनें लगा ……पर ये क्या ? वो कुछ ही देर में चिल्लानें लगी ………..वो भागी ……….वो इधर उधर दौड़नें लगी ……….वो कन्हैया को अपनें वक्ष से हटानें का प्रयास करनें लगी ………पर ये तो चिपक गए थे उसकी छाती से …………

उद्धव बोले …तात ! पिलानें आयी थी दूध ……..पर ये तो परम उदार हैं………तुम थोड़ा दो ये पूरा लेते हैं………….हँसे उद्धव ।

विष मिश्रित दूध पिलानें आयी थी ……पिला रही थी …..पर कन्हैया नें कहा ……इतनें से अब काम नही चलनें वाला ………हम तो अब तुम्हारे प्राणों को ही पीएंगें………….

वो भागनें लगी , वो छटपटानें लगी ……….उसका वो सौन्दर्य सब खतम हो रहा था ……..वो राक्षसी रूप में आने लगी थी ।

हाँ तात विदुर जी ! पूतना नें एक बार सोचा कि ……इस बालक को ऐसे ही लेकर मथुरा जाऊँ………वो भागी मथुरा की ओर ……..पर भागते हुये वो गिरी……..जब गिरी ……..तो जंगल के जंगल उसके देह के नीचे आकर दव गए थे……..उसका भयानक रूप वापस आगया था ……….पर कन्हैया बड़े प्रेम से स्तन पान करते ही रहे अभी भी…..वो हटा रही है ……..वो चीख रही है ……वो छटपटा रही है ।

मैया ! ओ बृजरानी मैया !

दो ग्वाले दौड़े हुए आये ।

बृजरानी उठीं………मेरे लाला को देखा क्या ? बृजरानी नें पूछा ।

हाँ …..हाँ …….उधर उधर ………..ग्वाले भी घबराये हुये थे ।

अरे क्या हुआ ? बता तो ? रोहिणी नें पूछा ।

एक विशाल देह है …………राक्षसी का देह है …………उसके ऊपर हमारा लाला खेल रहा है ।

बस ये सुनते ही बृजरानी तो धड़ाम से धरती में गिर गयीं……और मूर्छित ही हो गयीं ।

नन्द राय जी आगये थे …….उनके साथ चार पाँच ग्वाले थे ……….वो सब दौड़े …….कहाँ है राक्षसी ? अब तो पूरा गोकुल ही आगया था …..ग्वाल बाल लाठी फरसा सब ले आये थे ………

यशोदा जी कुछ देर में उठीं………..वो फिर रोहिणी को लेकर दौड़ीं उस राक्षसी की ओर ।

ग्वाल बाल नें देखा विशाल देह है …… पड़ा हुआ है …………उसके ऊपर लाला खेल रहा है ……….

सबसे पहले तो ग्वालों नें देखा पूतना मर चुकी थी………

फिर उसके देह में चढ़कर लाला को उठा लाये ……………

यशोदा की गोद में लाकर दिया…….यशोदा जी नें देखा ……सबसे पहले लाला के नाक में हाथ रखा……साँस चल रही है लाला की……

पर ये रो क्यों नही रहा ? मैया घबरा गयीं ।

रोहिणी ! ये रो नही रहा ? देख ना ? यशुमति की घबराहट बढ़ती जा रही थी………तभी कन्हैया नें रोना शुरू किया ……..बस रोनें की आवाज सुनते ही………प्रसन्नता से भर गयीं यशोदा जी …….नेत्रों से सुख के अश्रु बहनें लगे थे……….चूमनें लगीं लाला का मुख ।

पर उसी समय क्रोध से भर गए थे ग्वाले ………फरसा लिया और पूतना के अंगों को काटनें लगे …….हाथ काट दिए …….पैर काट दिए …….और सब नें मिलकर सूखी लकड़ियां पूतना के ऊपर डाल, आग लगा दी ।

पर तात विदुर जी ! सब आश्चर्य से देख रहे थे उस दृश्य को ……..

कि पूतना के देह से एक सुगन्ध प्रकट हुआ……दिव्य सुगन्ध……पूरे वातावरण को सुगन्ध से भर दिया उसनें …….किसी को कुछ समझ में नही आरहा था कि ये दिव्य गन्ध इस राक्षसी के देह से क्यों ?

हाँ ….ऐसा क्यों ? उद्धव ! विदुर जी नें भी प्रश्न किया ।

तात ! चन्दन वृक्ष को काटनें वाली जो कुल्हाड़ी होती है ना ……..चन्दन के प्रभाव से कुल्हाडी में भी सुगन्ध आजाता है ।

तात ! कन्हैया के दिव्य देह का इस राक्षसी ने स्पर्श किया था…..ये साधारण बात नही थी ।

इसे तो अपनी माता की गति दे दी थी…….गोलोक भेज दिया कन्हैया नें इसे …….अपनी धाय माँ बनाकर सदा के लिए ।

धन्य है कन्हैया की करुणा ……आहा !

गई मारन पूतना कुच कालकूट लगाई ,

मातु की गति दई ताहि, कृपालु जादव राई !!
