An old farmer lived with his little grandson on a farm in the middle of the mountains. Every morning his grandfather was sitting at the kitchen table reciting the Bhagavad Gita.

The grandson wanted to be like him and tried to imitate him in every way.

One day the grandson asked, “Grandfather, I try to read the Bhagavad Gita like you, but I do not understand it, and what I do understand, I forget as soon as I close the book.” What is the benefit to me of reading the Bhagavad Gita?”

Grandfather pouring coal into the stove turned to his grandson and replied, “Take this coal basket to the river and bring me back after filling it with water.”

The boy did as he was told, but all the water in the basket ran out before he could return home.

Grandfather laughed and said, “Next time you walk a little faster,” and Grandfather told him to try again and sent him back to the river with the basket.

This time the boy ran faster, but before he could return home the basket was again empty. With bated breath he told his grandfather, “It is impossible to carry water in this basket.” And now he went to get water in a bucket instead of the basket.

Grandpa said, “I don’t want the water in the bucket; I want the water in the basket. You’re just not trying hard enough,” and then Grandpa went out the door to watch the boy try again.

The boy knew it was impossible, but still wanted to show his grandfather that no matter how fast he ran, the water would run out of the basket before he could get back home. The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was empty again.

He lost his courage and said to Grandpa, “Look! It’s useless.”

“So you think it’s useless?” Grandpa said. If so, then take a look at the basket carefully.

The boy looked at the basket. For the first time he felt that the basket looked different. She has changed from a dirty old coal basket to a clean basket inside and out.

“Son, this is what happens when you read Bhagavad Gita. You may not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed from inside and outside. This is the work of God in our lives. We do.”

It is not only about Bhagavad Gita but about any spiritual book. It changes our life.
