There is an account of a guest house in Varanasi where people take admission for death. It is called ‘Kashi Labh Mukti Bhavan’.

Some people also call it Death Hotel.

According to a Hindu belief if one takes his last breath in Kashi, he gets Kashi Labh (fruit of Kashi) which is actually Moksha or liberation.

The interesting fact about this guest house is that only two weeks are allowed to stay and die in it. Therefore one must be really sure of one’s death before entering into it.

If a person is still alive after two weeks, he has to leave this guest house.

Curious, I decided to go there to understand what the people who Not only has he accepted death as a reality but has also anticipated his death with a definite time.

I spent two weeks at the guesthouse and interviewed people who entered. His life lessons were indeed thought provoking.

In the same environment, I met Mr. Bhairav Nath Shukla, who was the manager of Mukti Bhavan for the last 44 years. In all these years he had seen more than 12,000 deaths while working there.

I asked him, “Shukla ji, you have seen both life and death so closely. I am curious to know what your experiences have been like.”

Shukla ji shared 12 life lessons with me in this regard. But one of the lessons in this series, which impressed Shukla ji and touched me deeply, is the lesson of life – ‘Sweet all disputes before leaving’.

He told me a story behind it…

There was a Sanskrit scholar of that time, whose name was Ram Sagar Mishra. Mishra ji was the eldest of six brothers and at one point he had the closest relationship with his youngest brother.

Years ago, an argument led to a rift between Mishra and his youngest brother. This led to a wall between them, eventually dividing their household.

In his last years, Mishra ji entered this guesthouse. He gave room no. 3 as they were sure that he would die on the 16th day of his arrival.

On the 14th day, Mishra ji expressed his desire to see his estranged brother of 40 years. He said, “This bitterness is weighing heavily on my heart. I want to settle all disputes before I go.”

On the 16th day a letter was sent to his brother. Soon, his youngest brother arrived. Mishra ji held his hand and asked him to demolish the dividing wall. He apologized to his brother.

Both the brothers started crying and in the middle suddenly Mishra ji stopped speaking. His face became calm and he passed away at that very moment.

Shukla ji told me that he has seen the same story repeated again and again with many people who come there. He said, “I have seen that all people carry this kind of unnecessary mental load throughout their lives, they only want to drop it at the time of their journey.”

However, he said that it cannot happen that you never have any estrangement with anyone, rather it is better that the estrangement should be resolved as soon as it occurs. Disputes, anger or suspicion should not be kept for too long and should always be tried to resolve them as soon as possible, because the good news is that we are alive, but the bad news is that No one knows how long we are alive.

So, whatever it may be, settle your differences today, because Tomorrow cannot be promised to anyone in this world. Think…is there something or someone we want to make peace with in time?

“When we have bitter experiences with someone, we must take away the emotional burden by adopting an attitude of forgiveness.
