A big dam was built near the village of Amen Shretra and the farmers of the surrounding villages helped in building it. It was hoped that after the end of the rains, the fields of the farmers would be able to be irrigated with the water of the dam. But with all events there is fear. Suddenly there was heavy rain in the night and there was flood in the river. It began to appear that the river water would enter the dam after breaking the bank and if the dam broke – the farmers’ lives dried up thinking that how long would the houses made of bamboo shacks survive the flood? The scene of the destruction that would happen to humans and animals began to appear in front of me.
The watchmen fired bullets in the air to warn the people, the people of the village got involved in the maintenance of the dam. Soil, stones and sand started falling rapidly on the banks of the dam.
A person named Maang, who was assigned the task of checking whether the dam is weak, saw a long thin hole at one place in the far distance. And from that the river water is coming inside. If you get time even for a few moments, that hole will become so big that it will not be possible to close it. There was no other solution, Maang himself stood up pressing that hole with his body.
It was raining from above, cool wind was blowing and Maang was standing in the water by pressing the velocity of water with the body. His body was stiff with cold, his bones were aching. At last he fainted from pain. But still the body of that hero stopped the flow of water and stuck to the dam.
‘Where did you ask?’ Other people of the village searched for a while; Because they were not allowed to ask for any information regarding the inspection of the dam. People themselves went out to see the dam. They saw Mang’s unconscious body clinging to the dam.
‘demand !’ But the demand was senseless, who would have answered. When people removed his body from there, the river started flowing in the dam. Another man stood pressing that hole. Some people took the unconscious Mang to the village and others closed the hole.
The story of Mang’s bravery and sacrifice is still narrated by Burmese mothers to their children.
