A famous Taoist story tells that a great emperor asked the greatest painter of his country to paint the mountain peaks of the Himalayas on the wall of his bedroom. “Color the Himalayas” – He was a lover of the Himalayas. The painter worked for two or three years and when the painting was completed he asked the king to come and see it.

The curtain on the wall was removed. The emperor just reached the other world. He had been to the Himalayas many times, he was a lover of mountains, but the painting went further than the real. He looked and looked and looked. He was so astonished that he could not utter a word for several minutes.

Then he suddenly said, “But I have been to these parts. I have never seen this path that goes around the mountains. Where did you get the idea of this path?”

And the story goes that the painter said, “I really don’t know. Let me go and see.” And he went down the path and disappeared behind the mountain—into the painting!—and never came back again.

Strange story, unbelievable. How can you go into painting and never come back again? But it is of great importance. This is not a historical event, but a mythological, poetic event, which says a lot.

It says that if a painter can get lost in his painting, then only he is a painter. A poet can get lost in his poetry, only then he is a poet. If he cannot get lost in his poetry, then his poetry is just rubbish. If he cannot get lost in his painting, he may be a master of all painting techniques, but he is not a great artist. He may be a technician, he may know everything about colors and canvas and he may know how to paint, but he has no real talent. His painting is something different from him, he has not yet reconciled with his painting.

And whenever there is a meeting, God is found.

That’s why I say that there are as many doors to God as there are people. All that is needed is to lose yourself in whatever you are doing, to become so totally one with it that nothing is left behind. In that very moment there is God. Unio Mystica (Volume-2, Chapter-9) || OSHO ||🙏🌹
