स्वामी विवेकानन्दके जीवनके कतिपय प्रेरक-प्रसंग

अलवरके महाराजके साथ भेंट
एक निर्भय जीवन
स्वामी विवेकानन्द सन् 1890 ई0 में कोलकातासे एक परिव्राजक संन्यासीके रूपमें भारतकी यात्रापर निकल पड़े। इस भ्रमणकालमें स्वामीजी समाजके हर स्तरके लोगोंसे मिलते थे। अलवरमें वे राज्यके दीवानकी जानकारीमें आ गये, जिन्होंने महाराजके साथ उनका परिचय कराया। महाराज अपने विचारों तथा व्यवहारमें अंग्रेजी ढंगके थे। वे अनेक हिन्दू रीति-रिवाजोंके विरोधी भी थे।
एक बार महाराजने स्वामीजीके साथ मूर्तिपूजाका विषय उठाया और परम्पराका उपहास जैसा किया। स्वामीजी कुछ समय शान्त बैठे रहे और फिर दीवानसे दरबारके सभागार में दीवार पर लगे महाराजके तैलचित्रकी इशारा करते हुए पूछा- यह किसका चित्र है ? उत्तर सुनकर कि यह महाराजका चित्र है, उन्होंने दीवानसे चित्र उतरवाकर उसपर थूक देनेके लिये कहा। आश्चर्यचकित और भयभीत होकर दीवान बोला- ऐसा कैसे किया जा सकता है, यह तो महाराजके तिरस्कारके समान है? इसपर स्वामीजीने उससे पूछा- ‘ इसमें महाराजका तिरस्कार कैसे है, चित्र तो तिरपाल और रंगोंका बना हुआ है।’ तदुपरान्त महाराजकी ओर देखते हुए स्वामीजीने कहा- ‘जिस प्रकार आपका चित्र होते हुए भी विचारोंके साहचर्यके कारण आप स्वयं न होते
हुए भी इससे जुड़ गये हैं, उसी प्रकार एक विश्वासी भक्तके लिये भगवान्की मूर्ति उसे देवविशेषसे जोड़ देती है तथा उस मूर्तिके माध्यमसे वह उस देवताकी पूजा करता है, मिट्टी या पत्थरकी नहीं।’
जिस स्पष्टता और निर्भयताके साथ स्वामीजीने इस विषयको महाराजके मनमें उतारा, उससे उनके धार्मिक विचारोंमें मोड़ आया और वे मूर्तिपूजाका सम्मान करने लग गये।

Meeting with the Maharaja of Alwar
A fearless life
Swami Vivekananda set out on a journey to India in 1890 from Calcutta as a wandering sanyasi. During this visit, Swamiji met people from all walks of life. At Alwar he came to the knowledge of the Diwan of the State, who introduced him to the Maharaja. The Maharaja was English in his thoughts and behaviour. He was also opposed to many Hindu customs.
Once the Maharaja raised the subject of idol worship with Swamiji and made a mockery of tradition. Swamiji sat quietly for some time and then asked the Diwan, pointing to the oil painting of the Maharaja on the wall in the auditorium of the court: Whose painting is this? Hearing the answer that it was the picture of the Maharaja, he asked the Diwan to take down the picture and spit on it. Surprised and frightened, the Diwan said, “How can this be done? It is like contempt for the Maharaja. Swamiji asked him, ‘How can there be contempt for the Maharaja in this? The picture is made of tarpaulin and colours. Then, looking at the Maharaja, Swamiji said, ‘Just as if you had a picture, you would not be yourself because of the association of thoughts
Hue have also become attached to it, in the same way for a faithful devotee the idol of the Lord connects him with a particular deity and through that idol he worships that deity, not of clay or stone.’
The clarity and fearlessness with which Swamiji brought this subject to the attention of the Maharaja gave a turn in his religious views and he began to respect idol worship.
