कर्तव्यपालनका महत्त्व

मद्रास प्रान्तमें एक रेलका पायंटमैन था। एक दिन वह पायंट पकड़े खड़ा था। दोनों ओरसे दो गाड़ियाँ पूरी तेजीके साथ आ रही थीं। इसी समय भयानक काला सर्प आकर उसके पैरमें लिपट गया। सर्पको देखकर पायंटमैन डरा। उसने सोचा- ‘मैं साँपके हटानेके लिये पायंट छोड़ देता हूँ तो गाड़ियाँ लड़ जाती हैं और हजारों नर-नारियोंके प्राण जाते हैं। नहींछोड़ता तो साँपके काटनेसे मेरे प्राण जाते हैं । भगवान्ने उसे सद्बुद्धि दी। क्षणभरमें ही उसने निश्चय कर लिया कि सर्प चाहे मुझे डँस लें, पर मैं पायंट छोड़कर हजारों नर-नारियोंकी मृत्युका कारण नहीं बनूँगा । वह अपने कर्तव्यपर दृढ़ रहा और वहाँसे जरा भी नहीं हिला। जिन भगवान्ने उसे सद्बुद्धि दी, उन्होंने ही उसे बचाया। गाड़ियोंकी भारी आवाजसे डरकर साँपउसका पैर छोड़कर भाग गया। पायंटमैनकी कर्तव्य निष्ठासे हजारों मनुष्योंके प्राण बच गये। जब अधिकारियोंकीयह बात मालूम हुई, तब उन्होंने पायंटमैनको पुरस्कार देकर सम्मानित किया।’

There was a railway pointsman in Madras province. One day he was standing holding a point. Two vehicles were coming at full speed from both the sides. At the same time, a terrible black snake came and wrapped around his feet. Pointman got scared seeing the snake. He thought- ‘If I leave a point to remove snakes, the vehicles fight and thousands of men and women die. If I don’t leave, then I die due to snake bite. God gave him wisdom. Within a moment, he decided that even if the snake bites me, I will not become the reason for the death of thousands of men and women by leaving a point. He remained firm on his duty and did not budge from there. The Gods who gave him wisdom saved him. Afraid of the loud noise of the vehicles, the snake left his leg and ran away. Thousands of human lives were saved by the dedication of the pointman. When the officials came to know about this, then they honored the pointman by giving him a prize.
