विजयके लिये सेनापति आवश्यक
एक समयकी बात है। हैहयवंशी क्षत्रियोंने अपने प्रचण्ड पराक्रमसे अलौकिक समृद्धि अर्जित की। उनकी इस विपुल समृद्धि और प्रभुतासे अमर्षग्रस्त ब्राह्मणोंने समाजके अन्य वर्गोंको अपने पक्षमें करके क्षत्रियोंपर आक्रमण कर दिया। उस समय वैश्य और शूद्रोंने भी ब्राह्मणोंका साथ दिया था। इस प्रकार एक ओर तीनों वर्णोंके पुरुष थे और दूसरी ओर हैहय क्षत्रिय थे। जब युद्ध आरम्भ हुआ तो तीनों वर्णोंमें फूट पड़ गयी और उनकी सेना बहुत बड़ी होनेपर भी क्षत्रियोंने उसे जीत लिया। तब ब्राह्मणोंने क्षत्रियोंसे ही अपनी हारका कारण पूछा। धर्मज्ञ क्षत्रियोंने उसका कारण बताते हुए कहा, ‘हम युद्ध करते समय एक ही परम बुद्धिमान् पुरुषकी आज्ञा मानकर लड़ते थे और तुम सब-के-सब अलग अलग अपनी-अपनी बुद्धिके अनुसार काम करते थे।’ तब ब्राह्मणोंने अपनेमेंसे एक युद्धनीतिमें कुशल शूरवीरको अपना सेनापति बनाया और क्षत्रियोंको परास्त कर दिया। नीतिके मर्मज्ञोंका यह स्पष्ट अभिमत है कि
एवं ये कुशलं शूरं हितेप्सितमकल्मषम् । सेनापतिं प्रकुर्वन्ति ते जयन्ति रणे रिपून् ॥
अर्थात् जो युद्ध-संचालनमें कुशल, हितकारी, निष्कपट शूरवीरको अपना सेनापति बनाते हैं, वे ही संग्राममें शत्रुओंको जीतते हैं
general is necessary for victory
Once upon a time. The Haihayavanshi Kshatriyas earned supernatural prosperity by their tremendous might. Enraged by their immense prosperity and dominance, the Brahmins attacked the Kshatriyas by winning over other sections of the society to their side. At that time Vaishyas and Shudras also supported the Brahmins. Thus on one side there were men of all the three varnas and on the other side there were Haihay Kshatriyas. When the war started, the three varnas were divided and the Kshatriyas won it even though their army was very large. Then the Brahmins asked the Kshatriyas themselves the reason for their defeat. Explaining the reason, the pious Kshatriyas said, ‘While fighting, we used to fight by following the orders of the same supremely intelligent man and all of you used to work separately according to your intelligence.’ Then the brahmins made one of their own skilful warriors as their commander and defeated the kshatriyas. And this Kushalam Shuram Hitepsitamakalmsham. Senapati Prakurvanti Te Jayanti Rane Ripun ॥
That is, those who make a skilled, benevolent, sincere warrior as their commander in war, they only win the enemies in the battle.
