वैराग्यविद्यानिजभक्तियोग-
शिक्षार्थमेक: पुरुष: पुराण:।
श्रीकृष्णचैतन्यशरीरधारी
कृपाम्बुधिर्यस्तमहं प्रपद्ये।।
संन्यास के मानी हैं अग्निमय जीवन। पिछले जीवन की सभी बातों का ज्ञानग्नि में जलाकर स्वयं अग्निमय बन जाना- यही इस महान व्रत का आदर्श है। संसार की एकदम उपेक्षा कर दो, जीवमात्र में मैत्री के भाव रखो और सम्पूर्ण संसारी सम्बन्धों और परिग्रहों का परित्याग करके भगवन्नामनिष्ठ होकर वैराग्यरागरसिक बन जाओ। संसारी सभी बातों को हृदय से निकालकर फेंक दो। सत्त्वगुण के स्वरूप सफेद वस्त्रों का भी परित्याग कर दो और रज, तम, सत्त्व से भी ऊपर उठकर त्रिगुणातीतबनकर महान सत्त्व में सदा स्थिर रहो। इसीलिये संन्यासी के वस्त्र अग्निवर्ण के होते हैं। क्योंकि उसने जीवित रहने पर भी यह शरीर अग्नि को सौंप दिया है, वह ‘नारायण’ के अतिरिक्त किसी दूसरे को देखता ही नहीं है। इसीलिये संन्यास के समय पूर्वाश्रम के नाम को भी त्याग देते हैं और गुरुदत्त महाप्रकाशरूपी नवीन नाम से इस शरीर का संकेत करते हैं। वास्तव में तो संन्यासी नामरुप से रहित ही बन जाता है।
महाप्रभु का क्षोर-कर्म समाप्त हुआ। अब वे शिखा सूत्रहीन हो गये। क्षौर हो जाने के पश्चात प्रभु ने सुरसरि के शीतल जल में घुसकर स्नान किया और वस्त्र बदले हुए वे वेदी के समीप आ गये। हाथ जोडे़ हुए अति दीनभाव से वे भारती जी के सम्मुख बैठ गये। भारती जी विजयाहवन आदि सभी संन्यासोचित कर्म कराकर प्रभु को मन्त्र-दीक्षा देने का विचार किया। हाथ जोडे़ हुए विनीतभाव से प्रभु ने संन्यास-मन्त्र ग्रहण करने की जिज्ञासा की। भारती जी ने इन्हें अपने समीप बैठ जाने के लिये कहा। गुरुदेव के आज्ञानुसार प्रभु उनके समीप बैठ गये।
मन्त्र देने में भारती जी कुछ आगा-पीछा-सा करने लगे। तब महाप्रभु ने उत्सुकता प्रकट होते हूए पूछा- ‘भगवन्! मैंने ऐसा सुना है कि संन्यास के मन्त्र को किसी के सामने कहना न चाहिये।’
भारती जी ने कहा- ‘हाँ, संन्यास-मन्त्र को शास्त्रों में परम गोप्य बताया गया है। गुरुजनों के अतिरिक्त उसे हर किसी के सामने प्रकाशित नहीं करते हैं।’
यह सुनकर प्रभु ने कहा- ‘मुझे आपसे एक बात निवेदन करनी है, किंतु वह गुप्त बात है, कान में ही कह सकूँगा।’
भारती जी ने अपना दायाँ कान प्रभु की ओर बढा़ते हुए कहा- ‘हाँ-हाँ, जरूर कहो। कौन-सी बात है?’
प्रभु अपना मुख भारती जी के कान के समीप ले गये और धीरे-धीरे कहने लगे- ‘एक दिन मैंने स्वप्न में एक ब्राह्मण को देखा था। वह भी संन्यासी ही थे और उनका रुप-रंग आपसे बहुत कुछ मिलता-जुलता था। स्वप्न में ही उन्होंने मुझे संन्यासी बनने का आदेश दिया और स्वयं उन्होंने मेरे कान में संन्यास-मन्त्र दिया। वह मन्त्र मुझे अभी तक ज्यों-का-त्यों याद है, आप उसे पहले सुन लें कि वह गलत है या ठीक।’ यह कहकर प्रभु ने भारती जी के कान में वही स्वप्न में प्राप्त मन्त्र पढ़ दिया। मानों उन्होंने प्रकारान्तर से भारती जी को पहले स्वयं अपना शिष्य बना लिया हो। प्रभु के मुख से यथावत शुद्ध-शुद्ध संन्यास-मन्त्र को सुनकर भारती जी को कुछ आश्चर्य-सा प्रकट करते हुए प्रेम में गद्गद-कण्ठ से कहने लगे- ‘जब तुम्हें श्रीकृष्ण-प्रेम प्राप्त है, तब फिर तुम्हारे लिये अगम्य विषय ही कौन-सा रह जाता है?’ कृष्ण-प्रेम ही तो सार है, जप-तप, पूजा-पाठ, वानप्रस्थ, संन्यस्त आदि धर्म सभी उसी की प्राप्ति के लिये होते हैं। जिसे कृष्ण-प्रेम की प्राप्ति हो चुकी, उसके लिये मन्त्र ग्रहण करना, दीक्षा आदि लेना केवल लोकशिक्षणार्थ है। तुम तो मर्यादारक्षा के लिये संन्यास ले रहे हो इस बात को मैं खूब जानता हूँ।
कृष्ण-कीर्तन तो तुम घर में भी रहकर कर सकते थे, किंतु यह दिखाने के लिये कि गृहस्थ में रहते हुए लौकिक तथा वैदिक कर्मों को, जिनका कि वेदशास्त्रों में गृहस्थी के लिये विधान बताया गया है, अवश्य ही करते रहना चाहिये। तुम्हारे द्वारा अब वे स्मृतियों में कहे हुए धर्म नहीं हो सकते। इसीलिये तुम संन्यास-धर्म का अनुसरण कर रहे हो। ‘जब तक ज्ञान में पूर्ण निष्ठा न हो, जब तक भगवत-गुणों में भलीभाँति रति न हो, तब तक स्मृतियों में ऋषियों के बताये हुए धर्मों का अवश्य ही पालन करते रहना चाहिये। इसलिये गृहस्थी में रहकर तुमने वैदिक कर्मों का यथावत पालन किया और अब कर्म-परित्याग के साथ ही पूर्व आश्रम का परित्याग कर रहे हो और संन्यास-धर्म के अनुसार सदा दण्ड धारण करके संन्यास-धर्म की कठोरता को प्रदर्शित करोगे, तुम्हारे वे सभी काम लोक-शिक्षार्थ ही है।’
इस प्रकार प्रभु की भाँति-भाँति से स्तुति करके भारती जी उन्हें मन्त्र-दीक्षा देने के लिये तैयार हुए। एक छोटे-से वस्त्र की आड़ करके भारती जी ने प्रभु के कान में संन्यास-मन्त्र कह दिया। बस, उस मन्त्र के सुनते ही प्रभु बेहोश होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े और ‘हा कृष्ण! हा कृष्ण!!’ इस प्रकार जोरों से चिल्ला-चिल्लाकर क्रन्दन करने लगे। पास ही में बैठे हुए नित्यानन्द जी ने उन्हें संभाला और होश में लाने की चेष्टा की।
भारती जी ने प्रभु के सभी पुराने श्वेत वस्त्र उतारवा दिये थे और उन्हें अग्निवर्ण के काषाय-वस्त्र पहनने के लिये दिये। एक बर्हिवास (ओढ़ने का वस्त्र), दो कौपी नें एक भिक्षा मांगने को वस्त्र, एक कन्था और एक कटिवस्त्र- इतने कपड़े भारती जी ने प्रभु के लिये दिये। रक्त-वर्ण के उन चमकीले वस्त्रों को पहनकर प्रभु की उस समय ऐसी शोभा हुई मानो शरत्काल में सबके मन को हरने वाले, शीत से दु:खी हुए लोगों के दु:ख को दूर करते हुए अरुण रंग के बाल-सूर्य आकाश में उदित हुए हों।
सुवर्ण-वर्ण के उनके शरीर पर काषाय-रंग के वस्त्र बड़े ही भले मालूम पड़ते थे। कंधे पर कन्था पड़ा हुआ था, छोटा वस्त्र सिर से बंधा हुआ था। एक हाथ में काठ का कमण्डलु शोभा दे रहा था, दूसरे हाथ से अपने संन्यास-दण्ड को लिये हुए थे और मुख से ‘श्रीकृष्ण-श्रीकृष्ण’ इस प्रकार कहते हुए अश्रु बहाते हुए खडे़ थे। प्रभु के इस त्रैलोक्य-पावन सुन्दर स्वरूप को देखकर सभी उपस्थित दर्शकवृन्द अवाक-से हो गये। उस समय सब-के-सब काठ की मूर्ति बने हुए बैठे थे। प्रभु के अद्भुत रूप-लावण्ययुक्त श्रीविग्रह को देखकर सबका मन अपने-आप ही प्रेमानन्द में विभोर होकर नृत्य कर रहा था। सभी की आँखों से प्रेम के अश्रु निकल रहे थे। प्रभु कुछ थोडे़ झुककर खडे़ हुए थे। भारती जी सामने ही एक उच्चासन पर स्थिर भाव से गम्भीरतापूर्वक बैठे हुए थे।
उस समय यदि कोई जोरों से सांस भी लेता तो वह भी सुनायी पड़ता। मानो उस समय पक्षियों ने भी बोलना बंद कर दिया हो और पवन भी रुककर प्रभु की अद्भुत शोभा के वशीभूत होकर उनके रूप लावण्यरूपी रस का पान कर रहा हो।
उस समय भारती जी महाप्रभु के संन्यास के नाम के सम्बन्ध में सोच रहे थे। वे प्रभु की प्रकृति के अनुसार अपने परमप्रिय शिष्य का सार्थक नाम रखना चाहते थे। उन्हें कोई सुन्दर-सा नाम सूझता ही नहीं था। उसी समय मानो साक्षात सरस्वती देवी ने उन्हें उनके इस काम में सहायता दी। सरस्वती ने उन्हें सुझाया कि इन्होंने श्रीकृष्णभक्ति-विहीन जीवों को चैतन्यता प्रदान की है। जिस जीवन में श्रीकृष्ण-भक्ति नहीं वह जीवन अचेतन है। इन्होंने भगवन्नाम द्वारा अचेतन प्राणियों को चेतन बनाया है, अत: इनका नाम ‘श्रीकृष्ण-चैतन्य भारती’ ठीक रहेगा।
भारती जी को बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई। वे उस नीरवता को भंग करते हुए सब लोगों को सुनाकर कहने लगे- इन्होंने श्रीकृष्ण के सुमधुर नामों द्वारा लोगों में चैतन्यता का संचार किया है और आगे भी करेंगे, अत: आज से इनका नाम ‘श्रीकृष्ण-चैतन्य’ हुआ। भारती हमारी गुरुपरम्परा की संज्ञा है, अत: संन्यासियों में ये दण्डी स्वामी ‘श्रीकृष्ण-चैतन्य भारती’ कहे जायंगे।
इतना सुनते ही प्रभु भावावेश में आकर यह कहते हुए कि ‘मैं तो अपने प्यारे श्रीकृष्ण से मिलने के लिये वृन्दावन जाऊँगा’ दूसरी ओर भागने लगे। उस समय भागने के कारण हिलता हुआ काषाय-वस्त्र की ध्वजावाला दण्ड और काले रंग का कमण्डलू प्रभु के हाथों में बड़ा ही भला मालूम पड़ता था। प्रभु जोरों से ‘हरि-हरि’ पुकारते हुए भागने लगे। यह देखकर बहुत-से लोगों ने आगे जाकर प्रभु का मार्ग रोक दिया। सामने अपने रास्ते में लोगों को खड़ा हुआ देखकर प्रभु रोते-रोते कहने लगे- ‘भाइयो! तुम मुझे श्रीवृन्दावन का रास्ता बता दो। मैं अपने प्यारे श्रीकृष्ण के दर्शनों के लिये बहुत ही अधिक व्याकुल हो रहा हूँ। मुझे जब तक श्रीकृष्ण के दर्शन न होंगे तब तक शान्ति नहीं मिलेगी। तुम सभी भाई मेरा रास्ता छोड़ दो और मुझे ऐसा आशीर्वाद दो कि मैं अपने प्राण-प्यारे प्रियतम को पा सकूं।’
नित्यानन्द जी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो! आप पहले अपने पूज्य गुरुदेव के चरणों में प्रणाम तो कर आइये। फिर वे जिस प्रकार की आज्ञा करें वही कीजियेगा। बिना गुरु की आज्ञा लिये कहीं जाना ठीक नहीं है।’ इतना सुनते ही प्रभु कुछ सोचने लगे और बिना ही कुछ उत्तर दिये चुपचाप आश्रम की ओर लौट पड़े। और सब लोग भी प्रभु के पीछे-पीछे चले। आश्रम में पहुँचकर प्रभु ने दण्डी संन्यासी की विधि के अनुसार अपने गुरुदेव के चरणों में साष्टांग प्रणाम किया और भारती महाराज का आदेश पाकर उन्होंने उस रात्रि में वहीं गुरु-सेवा करते हुए निवास किया। संकीर्तन का रंग आज कल से भी बढ़कर रहा। इस प्रकार प्रभु संन्यास ग्रहण करके लोक शिक्षा के निमित्त गुरु-सेवा के माहात्म्य दिखाने लगे। प्रभु की वह रात्रि भी श्रीकृष्ण-कीर्तन और भागवत-चरित्रों के चिन्तन में व्यतीत हुई।

Vairagyavidyanijabhaktiyoga- One man for education is ancient. Sri Krishna consciousness body-bearer I seek refuge in Him who is the ocean of mercy.
Sannyas means a fiery life. Burning all the things of the past life in the fire of knowledge and becoming fiery itself – this is the ideal of this great fast. Ignore the world completely, keep the spirit of friendship with all living beings and by abandoning all worldly relations and possessions, become God-oriented and become a recluse. Throw away all the worldly things from the heart. Abandon even the white clothes in the form of sattva guna and rise above even Raja, Tama, Sattva and remain constant in the great Sattva, becoming the triple guna. That’s why the clothes of a monk are of fire color. Because he has given this body to fire even when he is alive, he does not see anyone else except ‘Narayan’. That is why, at the time of retirement, the name of Purvashram is also discarded and Gurudatta indicates this body by the new name of Mahaprakashrupi. In fact, a sannyasin becomes devoid of name and form.
Mahaprabhu’s Kshor-karma ended. Now those Shikhas have become threadless. After becoming alkaline, the Lord bathed in the cool water of Surasari and changed his clothes and came near the altar. With folded hands, he sat in front of Bharti ji with extreme humility. Bharti ji thought of giving Mantra-Diksha to the Lord after doing all the sannyasa rituals like Vijaya Havan etc. With folded hands, the Lord humbly inquired about taking the sannyas-mantra. Bharti ji asked him to sit near her. As per the order of Gurudev, the Lord sat near him.
Bharti ji started doing some back-and-forth while giving the mantra. Then Mahaprabhu expressed curiosity and asked – ‘ God! I have heard that the mantra of sannyas should not be uttered in front of anyone. Bharti ji said- ‘Yes, the sannyas-mantra has been described as the ultimate secret in the scriptures. Do not publish it in front of everyone except the teachers.
Hearing this, the Lord said- ‘I have to request you one thing, but it is a secret thing, I can say it in the ear only.’
Extending her right ear towards the Lord, Bharti ji said – ‘Yes, yes, definitely say. What is the matter?
The Lord took his face near Bharti ji’s ear and started saying slowly – ‘ One day I had seen a Brahmin in my dream. He was also a sannyasin and his appearance was very similar to yours. In the dream itself he ordered me to become a sannyasin and he himself gave the sannyas-mantra in my ear. I still remember that mantra as it is, you listen to it first whether it is wrong or right.’ Saying this, the Lord recited the same mantra received in the dream in the ear of Bharti ji. It is as if he himself has made Bharti ji his disciple by a change. After listening to pure sannyas-mantra from the mouth of the Lord, Bharti ji expressed some surprise and started saying out of love – ‘ When you have got the love of Shri Krishna, then what is the unattainable subject for you- What remains?’ Krishna-love is the essence, Japa-penance, worship-recitation, Vanprastha, Sannyast etc. religions are all for the attainment of that. For one who has attained Krishna-love, reciting mantras, initiation etc. is only for public education. I know very well that you are taking retirement to protect your dignity.
You could have performed Krishna-Kirtan even while staying at home, but to show that while living at home, you must continue to perform the worldly and Vedic rituals, which have been prescribed in the Vedas for the household. Now they cannot be the religion you said in your memories. That’s why you are following sannyas-dharma. ‘Until there is complete devotion in knowledge, until there is a good night in Bhagwat-qualities, then one must follow the dharma prescribed by the sages in the memories. That’s why you followed the Vedic Karmas while staying at home and now you are abandoning the former ashram along with Karma Parityag and you will always show the harshness of Sannyas Dharma by bearing the punishment according to Sannyas Dharma, all those works of yours will go to the world. – It’s for education only.
In this way, after praising the Lord in many ways, Bharti ji got ready to give him Mantra-Diksha. Under the guise of a small cloth, Bharti ji uttered the sannyas-mantra in the ear of the Lord. Simply, on hearing that mantra, the Lord fainted and fell on the earth and said ‘Ha Krishna! Ha Krishna!!’ Thus they started crying loudly. Sitting nearby, Nityanand ji handled him and tried to bring him to his senses.
Bharti ji had removed all the old white clothes of the Lord and gave him orange clothes of fire color to wear. One barhiwas (cloth to wear), two kopis, one begging cloth, one kantha and one kativastra – so many clothes were given by Bharti ji for the Lord. At that time wearing those bright clothes of blood color, the Lord was so beautiful as if the Sun had risen in the sky with Aruna colored hair, taking away the sorrows of the people who had lost everyone’s heart in autumn. The crimson-colored clothes looked very good on his golden-complexioned body. Kantha was lying on the shoulder, a small cloth was tied on the head. In one hand the wooden kamandalu was adorning, in the other hand he was carrying his sannyas-danda and he was standing shedding tears saying ‘Shri Krishna-Shri Krishna’ from his mouth. Seeing this trilokya-holy beautiful form of the Lord, all the present audience were speechless. At that time everyone was sitting like a wooden idol. Everyone’s mind was automatically dancing in ecstasy at the sight of the wonderful form of the Lord. Tears of love were coming out of everyone’s eyes. Prabhu was standing bowing down a bit. Bharti ji was sitting in front of him on a high seat with a steady attitude.
At that time, even if someone had breathed loudly, that too would have been heard. As if at that time even the birds had stopped speaking and the wind too stopped being influenced by the wondrous beauty of the Lord and was drinking the nectar of His divine form. At that time Bharti ji was thinking about the name of Mahaprabhu’s retirement. He wanted to give a meaningful name to his most beloved disciple according to the nature of the Lord. He could not think of any beautiful name. At the same time, as if Sakshat Saraswati Devi helped him in his work. Saraswati suggested to him that he has given consciousness to the creatures without devotion to Shri Krishna. The life in which there is no devotion to Shri Krishna, that life is unconscious. He has made unconscious beings conscious by the name of God, hence his name ‘Shri Krishna-Chaitanya Bharti’ will be appropriate.
Bharti ji was very happy. Dissolving that silence, he told all the people – he has spread consciousness among people through the melodious names of Shri Krishna and will continue to do so, hence from today his name is ‘Shri Krishna-Chaitanya’. Bharti is the noun of our Guruparampara, so this Dandi Swami will be called ‘Shri Krishna-Chaitanya Bharti’ among the sannyasins.
On hearing this, the Lord got emotional and started running to the other side, saying that ‘I will go to Vrindavan to meet my beloved Shri Krishna’. At that time, due to running away, the stick with the flag of orange cloth and the black colored kamandalu seemed very good in the hands of the Lord. Prabhu started running away shouting ‘Hari-Hari’. Seeing this, many people went ahead and blocked the way of the Lord. Seeing the people standing in front of him, the Lord started crying and saying- ‘Brothers! You show me the way to Sri Vrindavan. I am getting very anxious for the darshan of my beloved Shri Krishna. I will not get peace until I see Shri Krishna. All of you brothers leave my way and bless me in such a way that I can get my beloved beloved.
Nityanand ji said – ‘ Lord! First of all, you should bow down at the feet of your revered Gurudev. Then do whatever they order. It is not right to go anywhere without the Guru’s permission.’ On hearing this, the Lord started thinking and without giving any answer silently returned to the ashram. And everyone also followed the Lord. After reaching the ashram, Prabhu prostrated at the feet of his Gurudev according to the method of Dandi Sanyasi and after getting the order of Bharti Maharaj, he stayed there that night while serving his Guru. The color of Sankirtan was greater today than yesterday. In this way, after taking retirement, the Lord started showing the greatness of Guru-service for the sake of public education. That night of the Lord was also spent in the contemplation of Shri Krishna-Kirtan and Bhagwat-characters.
