विनयपत्रिका में भगवान् श्रीराम के अनन्य भक्त तुलसीदासजी भगवान् की भक्तवत्सलता व दयालुता का दर्शन करा रहे हैं।
हे हरि ! कस न हरहु भ्रम भारी।
जद्यपि मृषा सत्य भासै जबलगि नहिं कृपा तुम्हारी।।
अर्थ अबिद्यमान जानिय संसृति नहिं जाइ गोसाईं।
बिन बाँधे निज हठ सठ परबस पर्यो कीरकी नाईं।।
सपने ब्याधि बिबिध बाधा जनु मृत्यु उपस्थित आई।
बैद अनेक उपाय करै जागे बिनु पीर न जाई।।
श्रुति – गुरु – साधु – समृति – संमत यह दृश्य असत दुखकारी।
तेहि बिनु तजे, भजे बिनु रघुपति, बिपति सकै को टारी।।
बहु उपाय संसार – तरन कहँ, बिमल गिरा श्रुति गावै।
तुलसिदास मैं – मोर गये बिनु जिउ सुख कबहुँ न पावै।।
हिंदी भावार्थ-
हे हरे ! मेरे इस (संसार को सत्य और सुखरुप आदि मानने के) भारी भ्रम को क्यों दूर नहीं करते ? यद्यपि यह संसार मिथ्या है, असत हैं, तथापि जबतक आपकी कृपा नहीं होती, तब तक तो यह सत्य- सा ही भासता है।
मैं यह जानता हूँ कि (शरीर- धन- पुत्रादि) विषय यथार्थ में नहीं हैं, किन्तु हे स्वामी ! इतने पर भी इस संसार से छुटकारा नहीं पाता। मैं किसी दूसरे द्वारा बाँधे बिना ही अपने ही हठ (मोह) से तोते की तरह परवश बँधा पड़ा हूँ। (स्वयं अपने ही अज्ञान से बँध- सा गया हूँ।)
जैसे किसी को स्वप्न में अनेक प्रकार के रोग हो जायँ जिनसे मानो उसकी मृत्यु ही आ जाय और बाहर से वैद्य अनेक उपाय करते रहें, परन्तु जब तक वह जागता नहीं तब तक उसकी पीड़ा नहीं मिटती। (इसी प्रकार माया के भ्रम में पड़कर लोग बिना ही हुए संसार की अनेक पीड़ा भोग रहे हैं और उन्हें दूर करने के लिये मिथ्या उपाय कर रहे हैं, पर तत्त्वज्ञान के बिना कभी इन पीड़ाओं से छुटकारा नहीं मिल सकता।)
वेद, गुरु, संत और स्मृतियाँ- सभी एक स्वर से कहते हैं कि यह दृश्यमान जगत् असत् है और काल्पनिक सत्ता मान लेने पर दुःखरुप हैं। जब तक इसे त्यागकर श्रीरघुनाथ जी का भजन नहीं किया जाता तब तक ऐसी किसकी शक्ति हैं जो इस विपत्ति का नाश कर सके ?
वेद निर्मल वाणी से संसारसागर से पार होने के अनेक उपाय बतला रहे हैं, किन्तु हे तुलसीदास ! जब तक ‘मैं’ और ‘मेरा’ दूर नहीं हो जाता, अहंता- ममता नहीं मिट जाती, तब तक जीव कभी सुख नहीं पा सकता।

Hindi meaning- Hey Hare! Why don’t you remove this huge illusion of mine (considering the world as truth and happiness etc.)? Although this world is false, unreal, yet until your grace is not there, it appears to be true.
I know that the things (body, wealth, children etc.) are not in reality, but O Lord! Despite all this, one cannot escape from this world. Without being tied by anyone else, I am trapped like a parrot by my own stubbornness (infatuation). (I am bound by my own ignorance.)
For example, if someone gets many types of diseases in his dreams, it seems as if he will die and the doctors keep on trying various remedies from outside, but till he does not wake up, his pain does not go away. (Similarly, falling under the illusion of Maya, people are suffering many sufferings of the world without any of them and are taking false measures to get rid of them, but without philosophy, one can never get rid of these sufferings.)
Vedas, Gurus, Saints and Smritis – all say with one voice that this visible world is unreal and accepting imaginary existence is a form of sorrow. Unless this is abandoned and Lord Raghunath is worshiped, who has the power to destroy this calamity?
Vedas are telling many ways to cross the worldly ocean with pure speech, but O Tulsidas! Until ‘I’ and ‘mine’ go away, until ego-affection is erased, the living being can never attain happiness.
