गोस्वामी तुलसीदासजी अपनी पत्नी से बड़ा प्रेम करते थे | दिन भर उससे वार्तालाप और साहचर्य करने पर भी उनकी उस नारी के प्रति बड़ी आसक्ति थी | नारी सुख के अतिरिक्त उन्हें अन्य किसी सुख की इच्छा न थी | वे शरीर को सुख भोगने का ही प्रधान साधन मानते थे | वासना तथा इन्द्रियों के माया-जाल ने उन्हें बाँध रखा था | जितना ही वे इन्द्रिय – सुख के इस मार्ग पर बढ़ते गये, उतनी ही उन्हें इसकी आवशयकता अधिकाधिक प्रतीत होती गयी | आसक्ति उनकी प्रधान संगिनी थी |
एक दिन उसी नारी ने उनके ज्ञान के नेत्र खोल दिये | उसने कहा – ‘मेरे इस हाड़-मांस के नश्वर शरीर के प्रति जो मोह आपको है, यदि वही कहीं इश्वर के प्रति होता तो आपकी मुक्ति हो जाती |’
तुलसीदास देर तक उपर्युक्त कथन को सोचते रहे | चिन्तन करते रहे | चिन्तन करते-करते वे अन्त में इस परिणाम पर पहुँचे कि वास्तव में नारी का कथन सत्य है | आसक्ति से बढ़कर संसार में कोई दूसरा दुःख नहीं है | इन्द्रियों के विषयों में फँसे रहने से मनुष्य दु:खी रहता है |

Goswami Tulsidasji loved his wife very much. Even after having conversation and companionship with her throughout the day, he had great attachment towards that woman. Apart from female happiness, he had no desire for any other happiness. They considered the body as the main means of enjoying happiness. The illusory web of lust and senses had bound them. The more he progressed on this path of sense-pleasure, the more he felt the need for it more and more. Attachment was his main companion.
One day the same woman opened his eyes of knowledge. He said – ‘If the attachment you have towards this mortal body of mine, if the same was towards God, then you would have been liberated.’
Tulsidas kept thinking about the above statement for a long time. Keep thinking. While pondering, he finally came to the conclusion that the woman’s statement is actually true. There is no other sorrow in the world greater than attachment. Being entangled in the objects of the senses, man remains unhappy.
