[भज] निताई-गौर राधेश्याम [जप] हरेकृष्ण हरेराम
प्रेम रस लोलुप भ्रमर भक्तों का आगमन
क्वचित क्वचिदयं यातु स्थातुं प्रेमवशंवद: ।
न विस्मरति तत्रापि राजीवं भ्रमरो ह्रदि।।
कस्तूरी को कितना भी छिपाकर रखो, उसकी गन्ध फैल ही जाती है और उसके प्रभाव को जानने वाले पुरुष दूर से ही जान जाते हैं कि यहाँ पर कीमती कस्तूरी विद्यमान है। प्रेम छिपाने से नहीं छिपता। प्रेम को विज्ञापन की आवश्यकता नहीं। कमल के खिलते ही मधु-लोलुप भ्रमर अपने आप ही उसके ऊपर टूट पड़ते हैं। रस होना चाहिये। भ्रमरों की क्या कमी। सर्दी के दिनों में आग जलाकर स्वतन्त्र स्थान में बैठ जाओ, तापने वाले अपने आप ही एकत्रित हो जायँगे-उन्हें बुलाने की आवश्यकता न पड़ेगी।
प्रेमार्णव गौरांगदेव के संसर्ग में रहकर जो पहले प्रेम रस का पान कर चुके थे। उन्हें भला उनके सिवा दूसरी जगह वह रस कहाँ मिल सकता था? जिनके कर्णों में उस अद्वितीय रस की प्रशंसा भी पड़ गयी थी वे उस रसराज महासागर के दर्शन के लिये लालायित बने हुए थे। सार्वभौम भट्टाचार्य के मुख से प्रभु की प्रशंसा सुनकर कटकाधिपति महाराज प्रतापरुद्रदेव जी भी प्रभु के दर्शनों के लिये अन्यन्त ही उत्कण्ठित बने हुए थे।
श्रीजगन्नाथ जी के मन्दिर के सभी कर्मचारी, पुरी के बहुत से गण्यमान पुरुष तथा अनेक साधु संत प्रभु के दर्शन की इच्छा रखते थे। प्रभु के पुरी पधारने का समाचार सुनकर भट्टाचार्य सार्वभौम के सहित बहुत से प्रेमी पुरुष प्रभु से मिलने के लिये आये। प्रभु ने सभी को प्रेमपूर्वक बैठने के लिये कहा। सभी प्रभु के चरणों में प्रणाम करके बैठ गये। सार्वभौम भट्टाचार्य प्रभु को सबका पृथक पृथक परिचय कराने लगे। सबसे पहले उन्होंने काशी मिश्र का परिचय दिया- ‘ये महाराज के कुलगुरु और राज्यपुरोहित श्रीकाशी मिश्र हैं। प्रभु के चरणों में इनका दृढ़ अनुराग है। आपके चले जाने पर ये दर्शन के लिये बड़े ही उत्कण्ठित से बने रहे। यह घर, जिसमें प्रभु ठहरे हुए हैं, इन्हीं का है।’
प्रभु ने मिश्र जी की ओर प्रेमभरी चितवन से देखते हुए कहा- ‘मिश्र जी, मैं आज आपके दर्शनों से कृतार्थ हुआ। आप तो मेरे पिता के समान हैं। आपके घर में रहकर मैं भक्तों के सहित कृष्ण कीर्तन करता हुआ कालयापन करूँगा और नित्य आपके दर्शन पाता रहूँगा। इससे बढ़कर मेरे लिये और कौन सी सौभाग्य की बात हो सकती है?’
हाथ जोड़े हुए अत्यन्त ही विनीत-भाव से काशी मिश्र ने कहा- ‘प्रभो ! यह घर आपका ही है और सेवा करने के लिये यह दास भी सदा आपके चरणों के समीप ही बना रहेगा। आप इसे अपना निजी सेवक समझकर जो भी आज्ञा हो नि:संकोच भाव से कर दिया करें।’
इसके अनन्तर सार्वभौम भट्टाचार्य ने जगन्नाथ जी के अन्तरंग सेवक जनार्दन भगवान के स्वर्णबेंतधारी कृष्णदास, प्रधान लिखिया शिखी माइती, उनके भाई मुरारि तथा बहिन माध्वी और महापात्र प्रहरिराज प्रद्युम्न मिश्र आदि जगन्नाथ जी के सेवकों का प्रभु को परिचय कराया। प्रभु इन सबका परिचय पाकर उनकी बड़ाई करने लगे- ‘आप लोग की धन्य हैं, जो निरन्तर श्रीभगवान की सेवा पूजा में लगे रहते हैं। मनुष्य का मुख्य कर्तव्य यही है कि वह भगवत्सेवा पूजा के अतिरिक्त मन से भी दूसरे संसारी कामों का चिन्तन न करे।’
सभी भक्तों ने प्रभु के चरणों में प्रणाम किया और महाप्रभु की आज्ञा पाकर वे अपने अपने स्थानों के लिये चले गये। इसके अनन्तर महाप्रभु ने अपने साथ जाने वाले सेवक कृष्णदास को बुलाया। उसके आ जाने पर उसे लक्ष्य करके प्रभु भट्टाचार्य सार्वभौम से कहने लगे- ‘भट्टाचार्य, आप लोगों ने इसे मेरे साथ इसलिये भेजा था कि अचेतनावस्था में यह मेरे शरीर की देख-रेख करे, इसने यथाशक्ति मेरी खूब सेवा शूश्रूषा की; किन्तु यह एक स्थान में कुछ दम्भी साधुओं के बहकाने से कामिनी कांचन का लोभ में फंस गया। यह मुझे छोड़कर उनके साथ चला गया। जिसे कामिनी कांचन का लोभ हैं, जो अपनी इन्द्रियों पर इतना भी निग्रह नहीं कर सकता, उसे अपने पास रखना मैं उचित नहीं समझता। इसलिये आप इससे कह दें कि जहाँ इसकी इच्छा हो चला जावे। अब यह मेरे साथ नहीं रह सकता।’
प्रभु की ऐसी बात सुनकर (काला) कृष्णदास बड़े ही जोरों के साथ रुदन करने लगा। किन्तु प्रभु ने उसे फिर किसी भी प्रकार अपने साथ रखना स्वीकार नहीं किया। तब तो वह निराश होकर नित्यानन्द जी की शरण में गया और उनके चरण पकड़कर रोने लगा। नित्यानन्द आदि सभी भक्त इस बात को सोच रहे थे, कि ‘नवद्वीप में प्रभु के प्रत्यागमन का समाचार किस प्रकार पहुँचे। नवद्वीप के सभी भक्त प्रभु के वियोग दु:ख में व्याकुल बने हुए हैं, शचीमाता अपने प्यारे पुत्र का कुछ भी समाचार न पाने के कारण अधीर हो रही होगी, विष्णुप्रिया जी का तो एक एक दिन युग की भाँति कटता होगा, इसलिये कृष्णदास को ही नवद्वीप क्यों न भेज दें। इससे प्रभु की आज्ञा का भी पालन हो जायगा और शोकसागर में डूबे हुए सभी भक्तों को भी परम आनन्द हो जायगा।’ यह सोचकर उन्होंने अपने मनोगत भावों को प्रभु के सम्मुख प्रकट किया। प्रभु ने उत्तर दिया- ‘श्रीपाद ! मैं तो आपका नर्तक हूँ, जैसे नचायेंगे वैसे ही नाचूँगा। आपकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध मैं कुछ नहीं कर सकता। जो आपको अच्छा लगे वही कीजिये।’
नित्यानन्द जी ने दीनभाव से कहा- ‘प्रभो ! हम आपकी आज्ञा का उल्लघंन नहीं करना चाहते। आप जिस प्रकार की आज्ञा करेंगे, उसी का हम सहर्ष पालन करेंगे। आपकी अनुमति हो, तभी हम इसे नवद्वीप भेज सकते हैं अन्यथा नहीं।’
प्रभु ने कहा- ‘जब आपकी इच्छा है तब मेरी अनुमति ही समझें। आपकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध मेरी अनुमति हो ही नहीं सकती।’
प्रभु की आज्ञा पाकर नित्यानन्द जी ने कृष्णदास को जगन्नाथ जी का प्रसाद देकर नवद्वीप के लिये भेज दिया। कृष्णदास नित्यानन्द जी की आज्ञा पाकर और प्रभु के पादपद्मों में प्रणाम करके नवद्वीप के लिये चल दिया। इधर महाप्रभु पुरी में भक्तों के साथ रहकर नियमितरूप से भजन-कीर्तन करने लगे। बहुत से पुरी के भक्त आ आकर प्रभु के दर्शनों से अपने को कृतार्थ करने लगे। राय रामानन्द जी के पिता राजा भवानन्द जी ने जब प्रभु के आगमन का समाचार सुना तब वे अपने चारों पुत्रों के सहित महाप्रभु के दर्शन के लिये आये। प्रभु उनका परिचय पाकर अत्यन्त ही आनन्दित हुए और प्रसन्नता प्रकट करते हुए कहने लगे- जिनके रामानन्द जैसे भगवदभक्त पुत्र हों, वे महापुरुष तो देवताओं के वन्दनीय हैं, सचमुच आप धन्य हैं, आप तो साक्षात महाराज पाण्डु के समान हैं, पाँचों पुत्र ही आपके पाँचों पाण्डव हैं। राय रामानन्द युधिष्ठिर के समान सत्यप्रतिज्ञ, धर्मात्मा और भगवदभक्त हैं। आपकी गृहिणी साक्षात कुन्ती देवी के समान हैं। आपसे मिलकर मुझे बड़ी भारी प्रसन्नता हुई। आप मुझे रामानन्द जी की ही भाँति अपना पुत्र समझें।’
हाथ जोड़े हुए भवानन्द जी ने कहा- ‘मैं शुद्राधम, प्रभु की इस असीम कृपा का अपने को कभी भी अधिकारी नहीं समझता। आप भक्तवत्सल हैं, पतितपावन आपका प्रसिद्ध नाम है, उसी अपने नाम को सार्थक कर दिखाने के लिये आप मुझ जैसे संसारी विषयी पुरुष पर अपनी अहैतु की कृपा कर रहे हैं।
प्रभो ! आपके श्रीचरणों में मेरी यही बारम्बार प्रार्थना है कि इस अधम को अपने चरणों की शरण प्रदान कीजिये। मैं अपने परिवार के सहित आपके चरणों का दास हूँ। जिस समय जो भी आज्ञा हो उसे नि:संकोच भाव से कह दें।’ यह कहकर राजा भवानन्द जी ने अपने कनिष्ठ पुत्र श्रीवाणीनाथ जी को सदा प्रभु की सेवा करने के लिये नियुक्त किया। प्रभु ने वाणीनाथ को स्वीकार कर लिया और वाणीनाथ जी अधिकतर प्रभु की ही सेवा में रहने लगे।
इधर महाप्रसाद के साथ (काला) कृष्णदास नवद्वीप में शचीमाता के समीप पहुँचा। पुत्र का ही सदा चिन्तन करती रहने वाली माता अपने प्यारे दुलारे सुत का समाचार पाकर आनन्द में विभोर होकर अश्रुविमोचन करने लगी। विष्णुप्रिया जी भी अपनी सास के समीप आ बैठीं। माता एक एक करके पुत्र की सभी बातों को पूछने लगी। यह समाचार क्षणभर में ही सम्पूर्ण नगर में फैल गया। चारों ओर से भक्त आ आकर शचीमाता के आंगन में संकीर्तन करने लगे। बात की बात में ही शचीमाता का घर आनन्द भवन बन गया। हजारों भक्त ‘हरि हरि’ की गगनभेदी आनन्द ध्वनि से दिशा विदिशाओं को गुंजाने लगे। कृष्णदास से कोई प्रभु के शरीर का समाचार पूछता, कोई यात्रा का वृत्तान्त सुनना चाहता, कोई नवद्वीप कब पधारेंगे, इसी बात को बीसों बार दुहराने लगता। इस प्रकार कृष्णदास से सभी लोग विविध भाँति के एक साथ ही प्रश्न पूछने लगे। कृष्णदास यथा शक्ति सबका उत्तर देता। प्रभु के कुशल समाचार सुनाता, उनकी यात्रा की दो चार बातें बताकर कह देता- ‘अब सब बातें फुरसत में सुनाऊंगा।’ सभी भक्त बड़े ही मनोयोग के साथ कृष्णदास की बातों को सुनते।
इस प्रकार वह दिन बात की बात में ही प्रभु का समाचार पूछते पूछते ही व्यतीत हो गया।
दूसरे दिन श्रीवास आदि भक्तवृन्द कृष्णदास को साथ लेकर शान्तिपुर में अद्वैताचार्य के घर गये और उन्होंने बड़े ही उल्लास के सहित प्रभु के पुरी में लौट आने का समाचार सुनाया और प्रभु का भेजा हुआ महाप्रसाद भी उन्हें दिया। प्रभु के समाचार और महाप्रसाद को पाते ही बूढ़े आचार्य के सभी अंग-प्रत्यंग मारे प्रेम के फड़कने लगे, वे लम्बी लम्बी सांसें खींचते हुए हा गौर ! कहकर प्रेम में निमग्न हो गये और उठकर जोरों से संकीर्तन करने लगे। कुछ समय के पश्चात प्रेम का तूफान समाप्त हुआ, तब अद्वैताचार्य अन्य सभी भक्तों के साथ पुरी चलकर प्रभु के दर्शन करने के सम्बन्ध में परामर्श करने लगे। सभी ने निश्चय किया कि शीघ्र ही प्रभु के दर्शनों के लिये चलना चाहिये।
पाठक श्रीपरमानन्द पुरी महाराज का नाम न भूले होंगे। ये महाप्रभु को दक्षिण-यात्रा के समय मिले थे और गंगास्नान की इच्छा से प्रभु से विदा होकर नवद्वीप की ओर आये थे। प्रभु ने इनसे पुरी में आकर एक साथ रहने की प्रार्थना की थी और इन्होंने इसे सहर्ष स्वीकार भी कर लिया था। प्रभु से विदा होकर वे गंगा जी के दक्षिण किनारे-किनारे नवद्वीप आये थे और यहाँ आकर उन्होंने शचीमाता को प्रभु का संवाद सुनाया। संन्यासी के मुख से प्रभु का समाचार सुनकर माता को अत्यधिक आनन्द हुआ और उसने पुरी महाराज का यथोचित खूब सत्कार किया। पुरी महाराज भक्तों के आग्रह से कुछ काल नवद्वीप में ठहर गये थे।
जब कृष्णदास प्रभु का समाचार लेकर नवद्वीप आया, तब आप वहीं थे, दूत के मूख से प्रभु के पुरी पधारने का समाचार पाकर परमानन्द पुरी सचमुच परमानन्द में निमग्न हो गये और जल्दी से जल्दी वे प्रभु के समीप पहुँचने का उद्योग करने लगे। उन्होंने सोचा ‘हमें भक्तों के चलने की प्रतीक्षा न करनी चाहिये। ये सब घर गृहस्थी के काम करने वाले हैं। तैयारियाँ करते करते इन्हें महीनों लग जायँगे।’ इसलिये हमें इनसे पहले ही पहुँचकर प्रभु के दर्शन करना चाहिये।’ यह सोचकर वे कमलाकान्त नामक महाप्रभु के एक ब्राह्मण भक्त को साथ लेकर पुरी के लिये चले दिये और रास्ते के सभी तीर्थों के दर्शन करते हुए पुरी पहुँच गये।
पुरी पहुँचकर परमानन्द जी महाराज प्रभु की खोज करने लगे। फिर उन्होंने सोचा- ‘पहले श्रीजगन्नाथ जी के मन्दिर में चलकर भगवान के दर्शन कर लें, वहीं प्रभु का पता भी मिल जायगा।’ यह सोचकर वे सीधे श्रीजगन्नाथ जी के मन्दिर की ओर चले। मन्दिर में प्रवेश करते ही उन्हें अनेक लोगों से घिरे हुए प्रभु दिखायी दिये। पुरी महाराज उसी ओर बढ़े। दूर से ही पुरी को आते देखकर प्रभु ने उठकर उनके चरणों में प्रणाम किया और पुरी ने उन्हें प्रेमपूर्वक गले से लगाया। दोनों ही महापुरुष एक दूसरे से मिलकर परम प्रसन्न हुए और आनन्द में विभोर होकर एक दूसरे की स्तुति करने लगे। प्रभु ने कहा- ‘भगवन ! अब आपको वहीं रहकर हमें अपनी संगति से आनन्दित करते रहना चाहिये।’
पुरी महाराज ने प्रसन्नता प्रकट करते हुए कहा- ‘यहाँ आने का हमारा और प्रयोजन ही क्या है, हम तो यहाँ केवल आपकी संगति से लाभ उठाने के ही निमित्त आये हैं।’ यह सुनकर महाप्रभु पुरी महाराज को साथ लिये हुये भीतर मन्दिर में श्रीजगन्नाथ जी के दर्शनों के लिये गये और दर्शन करके प्रदक्षिणा करते हुए अपने निवास स्थान पर आये। वहाँ आकर प्रभु ने अपने समीप ही एक स्वतन्त्र कुटिया श्रीपरमानन्द जी महाराज के रहने के लिये दी और उनकी सेवा शुश्रूषा के लिये एक स्वतन्त्र सेवक भी दिया।
प्रभु के आगमन का समाचार काशी तक पहुँच गया था। प्रभु के जो अत्यन्त ही अन्तरंग भक्त थे, वे प्रभु का समाचार पाते ही उनकी सेवा में उपस्थित होने के लिये पुरी आने लगे। नवद्वीप के एक पुरुषोत्तमाचार्य नामक प्रभु के अत्यन्त ही प्रिय भक्त और विद्वान ब्राह्मण थे। महाप्रभु के चरणों में उनकी बहुत ही अधिक प्रीति थी। जब महाप्रभु ने संन्यास लिया, तब उन्हें अत्यन्त ही दु:ख हुआ। वे अपने दु:ख के आवेश को रोक नहीं सके, प्रभु के बिना उन्हें सम्पूर्ण नदिया नगरी सूनी सूनी सी दिखायी देने लगी। घर बार तथा संसारी सभी वस्तुएं उन्हें काटने के लिये दौड़ती-सी दिखायी देने लगीं। वे प्रभु के वियोग से दु:खी होकर श्रीकाशीधाम में चले गये और वहाँ पर स्वामी चैतन्यानन्द जी महाराज से उन्होंने संन्यास की दीक्षा ले ली। इनके गुरु ने इनका संन्यास का नाम रखा ‘स्वरूप’। प्रभु ने उसमें पीछे से दामोदर और मिला दिया था, इसलिये भक्तों में स्वरूप दामोदर के नाम से इनकी ख्याति है।
स्वामी चैतन्यानन्द जी जिस प्रकार मस्तिष्क प्रधान विचारवान संन्यासी हुआ करते हैं, उसी प्रकार के थे, किन्तु उनके शिष्य स्वरूपदामोदर परम सहृदय, हृदय प्रधान और भक्त हृदय के पुरुष थे। इसीलिये वे गुरु के पथ का अनुसरण नहीं कर सके। गुरुदेव ने जैसा कि शिष्यों को उपदेश करना चाहिये वैसा ही अद्वैतवेदान्त के विचार और प्रचार का उपदेश किया; किन्तु उनका हृदय तो साकार प्रेमस्वरुप श्रीकृष्ण की भक्ति के लिये तड़प रहा था, इसीलिये वे अपने गुरुदेव की आज्ञा का पालन कर सके। जब उन्होंने सुना कि दक्षिण की यात्रा समाप्त करके प्रभु पुन: पुरी में आकर निवास करने लगे हैं, तब तो उनसे वाराणसी में नहीं रहा गया और वे अपने गुरुदेव से आज्ञा लेकर पुरी के लिये चल दिये। काशी से पैदल चलकर वे सीधे प्रभु के समीप पहुँचे उन्हें देखते ही प्रभु के आनन्द का ठिकाना नहीं रहा। महाप्रभु इनसे लिपट गये और और अत्यन्त ही स्नेह के साथ इनका बार बार आलिंगन करने लगे। तब से ये प्रभु के सदा साथ ही रहे।
स्वरूपदामोदर की प्रभु के चरणों में अलौकिक भक्ति थी। इन्हें गौरभक्त दूसरा विग्रह ही मानते हैं। सचमुच इनमें सभी गुण महाप्रभु के ही अनुरूप थे। इनके शरीर का वर्ण भी महाप्रभु की भाँति गौर था। शरीर इकहरा और मन को स्वत: ही अपनी ओर आकर्षित करने वाला था। ये बड़े ही विनयी, सदाचारी और सरस हृदय के थे। विशेष भीड़-भाड़ इन्हें पसंद नहीं थी। एकान्तवास इन्हें बहुत प्रिय था, किन्तु प्रभु को छोड़कर ये एक क्षण के लिये भी कहीं नहीं जा सकते थे। ये किसी से भी विशेष बातचीत नहीं करते थे। विद्वान होने के साथ ही ये महान गम्भीर थे। महाप्रभु के साथ खाते, उन्हीं के साथ बैठते और उन्हीं के सेवा में अपना सभी समय व्यतीत करते। बारह वर्ष तक जब महाप्रभु सदा विरहावस्था में बेसुध बने रहे, तब ये सदा महाप्रभु के सिर को गोद में रखकर सोते थे।
महाप्रभु जब राधाभाव में विरह-वेदना से व्याकुल होकर रुदन करने लगते तब उन्हें ललिताभाव से मनाते और इनके गले में अपनी भुजाओं को डालकर रात भर तक प्रलाप करते रहते। सचमुच गौर भक्तों में स्वरूपदामोदर का जीवन बड़ा ही भावामय, प्रेममय और प्रणयमय था। यदि निरन्तरूप से छाया की तरह ये महाप्रभु के साथ न रहते, तो महाप्रभु की बारह वर्ष की गम्भीरा-लीला आज संसार में अप्रकट ही बनी रहती। ये महाप्रभु की नित्य की अवस्था को कड़चा (दैनन्दिनी) में लिखते गये। वही आज भक्तों को परम सुखकारी और मधुरभाव की पराकाष्ठा समझाने वाला ग्रन्थ स्वरूपदामोदर के कड़चा के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है।
महाप्रभु इनके प्रति अत्यधिक स्नेह था। महाप्रभु के मनोगत भावों को जिस उत्तमता के साथ ये समझ लेते थे, उस प्रकार कोई भी उनके भावों को नहीं समझ सकता था। ‘अमुक विषय में महाप्रभु की क्या सम्मति होगी।’ इसे ये यों ही सरलतापूर्वक बता देते थे और इसमें प्राय: भूल होती ही नहीं थी। महाप्रभु को भक्तिविहीन भजन, काव्य अथवा पद सुनने से घृणा थी, इसलिये महाप्रभु को कुछ सुनाने के पूर्व वह स्वरूपदामोदर को सुना दिया जाता। उनकी आज्ञा प्राप्त होने पर ही वह पीछे से प्रभु को सुनाया जाता। जैसे ये गम्भीर-प्रकृति, शान्त और एकान्तप्रिय थे वैसे ही इनका कण्ठ भी बड़ा मधुर और सुरीला था। ये महाप्रभु को विद्यापति ठाकुर, महाकवि चण्डीदास के पद तथा गीत-गोविन्द आदि भक्ति सम्बन्धी ग्रन्थों के श्लोक गा गाकर सुनाया करते थे। प्रभु जब तक इनके पदों को नही सुन लेते थे। तब तक उनकी तृप्ति नहीं होती थी। इनके गुण अनंत हैं। महाप्रभु उन्हें ही जान सकते थे। उन्हें महाप्रभु ही जान सकते थे। इसीलिये महाप्रभु को इनके आगमन से सबसे अधिक प्रसन्नता हुई। प्रभु कहने लगे- ‘तुम आ गये, इससे मुझे कितनी प्रसन्नता हूई, उसे व्यक्त करने में मैं असमर्थ हूँ, सचमुच तुम्हारे बिना मैं अन्धा था। तुमने आकर ही मुझे आलोक प्रदान किया है। मैं सदा तुम्हारे विषय में स्वप्न में देखा था कि तुम आ गये हो और खड़े खड़े मुसकरा रहे हो, सो सचमुच ही आज तुम आ गये। तुमने यह बड़ा ही उत्तम कार्य किया जो यहाँ चले आये। अब मुझे छोड़कर मत चले जाना।’
प्रेमपूर्ण स्वर से धीरे धीरे स्वरूपदामोदर ने कहा- ‘प्रभो ! मैं स्वयं आपके चरणों में आ ही कैसे सकता हूँ। जब मेरे पाप उदय हुए तभी तो आपके चरणों से पृथक होकर मैं अन्यत्र चला गया। अब जब आपने अनुग्रह करके बुलाया है, तो बरबस आपके प्रेमपाश में बँधा हुआ चला आया हूँ और जब तक चरणों में रखेंगे, तब तक मैं कहीं अन्यत्र जा ही कैसे सकता हूँ?’ यह कहकर स्वरूप प्रभु के चरणों में गिर पड़े। महाप्रभु उन्हें उठाकर उनकी पीठ पर धीरे धीरे हाथ फेरते रहे। उस दिन से स्वरूपदामोदर सदा प्रभु के समीप ही बने रहे।
एक दिन एक सरल से पुरुष ने आकर प्रभु के चरणों में प्रणाम किया और वह हटकर हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़ा हो गया। महाप्रभु के समीप उस समय सार्वभौम भट्टाचार्य, नित्यानन्द और बहुत से भक्त बैठे हुए थे। महाप्रभु ने उस विनयी पुरुष से पूछा- ‘भाई ! तुम कौन हो और कहाँ से आये हो?’
उस पुरुष ने बड़ी ही सरलता के साथ धीरे धीरे उत्तर दिया- ‘प्रभो ! मैं पूज्य श्री ईश्वरी पुरी महाराज का भृत्य हूँ। पुरी महाराज मुझे ‘गोविन्द’ के नाम से पुकारते थे। सिद्धि लाभ करते समय मैंने उनसे प्रार्थना की कि मेरे लिये क्या आज्ञा होती है। तब उन्होंने मुझे अपनी सेवा में रहने की आज्ञा दी। उनकी आज्ञा शिरोधार्य करके मैं आपके श्रीचरणों में उपस्थित हुआ हूँ। मेरे एक दूसरे गुरुभाई काशीश्वर और हैं। वे तीर्थयात्रा करने के निमित्त चले गये हैं। तीर्थयात्रा करके वे भी श्रीचरणों के समीप ही आकर रहेंगे। अब मुझे जैसी आज्ञा हो।’
इतना सुनते ही प्रभु का गला भर आया। उनकी आँखों की कोर अश्रुओं से भीग गयी। पुरी महाराज के प्रेम का स्मरण करके वे कहने लगे- ‘पुरी महाराज का मेरे ऊपर सदा वात्सल्य स्नेह रहा है। यद्यपि मुझे मन्त्र-दीक्षा देकर न जाने वे कहाँ चले गये; तब से उनके फिर मुझे दर्शन ही नहीं हुए। फिर भी वे मुझे भूले नहीं। मेरा स्मरण उन्हें अन्त तक बना रहा। अहा! अन्त समय में उन महापुरुष ने मेरा स्मरण किया, इससे अधिक मेरे ऊपर उनकी और कृपा हो ही क्या सकती है? मैं अपने भाग्य की कहाँ तक प्रशंसा करूँ, मैं अपने सौभाग्य की किस प्रकार सराहना करूँ जो अन्तर्यामी गुरुदेव ने शरीर त्यागते समय भी अपनी वाणी से मेरा नामोच्चार किया। सार्वभौम महाशय ! आप ही मुझे सम्मति दें कि मैं इनके बारे में क्या करूँ। ये मेरे गुरु महाराज के सेवक रहे हैं, इसलिये मेरे भी पूज्य हैं, इनसे मैं अपने शरीर की सेवा कैसे करवा सकता हूँ और यदि इन्हें अपने समीप नहीं रखता हूँ तो गुरु-आज्ञा का भंग होता है। अब आप ही बताइये मुझे ऐसी दशा में क्या करना चाहिये?’
सार्वभौम ने कहा- ‘प्रभो ! ‘गुरोराज्ञा गरीयसी’ गुरु की आज्ञा ही श्रेष्ठ है। गोविन्द सुशील हैं, नम्र हैं, आपके चरणों में इनका स्वाभाविक अनुराग हैं। सेवाकार्य में ये प्रवीण हैं। इसलिये इन्हें अपने शरीर की सेवा का अप्राप्य सुख प्रदान करके अपने गुरु महाराज की भी इच्छापूर्ति कीजिये और इन्हें भी आनन्द दीजिये।
भट्टाचार्य के इस सम्मति को प्रभु ने स्वीकार कर लिया और गोविन्द को अपने शरीर की सेवा का कार्य सौंपा। उसी दिन से गोविन्द सदा प्रभु की सब प्रकार की सेवा करते रहते थे। वे प्रभु से कभी भी पृथक नहीं हुए। बारह वर्ष तक जब प्रभु को शरीर का बिलकुल भी होश नहीं रहा, तब गोविन्द जिस प्रकार माता छोटे पुत्र की सब प्रकार की सेवा करती है, उसी प्रकार की सभी सेवा किया करते थे। इनका प्रभु के प्रति वात्सल्य और दास्य दोनों ही प्रकार का स्नेह था। ये सदा प्रभु के पैरों को अपनी छाती पर रखकर सोया करते थे। गौड़-देश से भक्त नाना प्रकार की बढ़िया-बढ़िया वस्तुएँ प्रभु के लिये बनाकर लाते थे। वे सब गोविन्द को ही देते थे और उन्हीं की सिफारिश से वे प्रभु के पास तक पहुँचती थीं। वे सब चीजों को बता-बताकर और यह कहते हुए कि अमुक वस्तु अमुक ने भेजी हैं, प्रभु को आग्रहपूर्वक खिलाते थे। इनके जैसा सच्चा सेवक त्रिलोकी में बहुत ही दुर्लभ है।
एक दिन प्रभु भीतर बैठे हुए थे। उसी समय मुकुन्द ने आकर धीरे से कहा- ‘प्रभो ! श्रीमत् केशव भारती जी महाराज के गुरुभाई श्रीब्रह्मानन्द जी भारती महाराज आपसे मिलने के लिये बाहर खड़े हैं, आज्ञा हो तो उन्हें यहाँ ले आऊँ।’
प्रभु ने जल्दी से कहा- ‘वे हमारे गुरुतुल्य हैं, उन्हें लेने के लिये हम स्वयं ही बाहर जायँगे।’ यह कहकर प्रभु अस्त व्यस्त से जल्दी जल्दी बाहर आये। वहाँ उन्होंने मृगचर्म ओढ़े हुए ब्रह्मानन्द जी भारती को देखा। महाप्रभु चारों ओर देखते हुए जल्दी जल्दी मुकुन्द से पूछने लगे- ‘मुकुन्द, मुकुन्द! भारती महाराज कहाँ हैं ? तुम कहते थे, भारती महाराज पधारे हैं, जल्दी से मुझे उनके दर्शन कराओ।’
मुकुन्द इस बात को सुनकर आश्चर्य चकित हो गये। भारती महाप्रभु के सामने ही खड़े हैं, फिर भी महाप्रभु भारती जी के सम्बन्ध में पूछ रहे हैं। इसलिये उन्होंने कहा- ‘प्रभो ! ये भारती महाराज आपके सामने ही तो खडे़ हैं!’
महाप्रभु ने कुछ दृढ़ता के स्वर में कहा- ‘नहीं, कभी नहीं; तुम झूठ कह रहे हो। भला, भारती महाराज इस प्रकार मृगचर्म ओढ़कर दिखावा कर सकते हैं।’ प्रभु की इस बात को सुनकर सभी चकित भाव से प्रभु की ओर निहारने लगे। भारती महाराज समझ गये कि प्रभु को मेरा यह मृगचर्माम्बर रुचिकर प्रतीत नहीं हुआ है, इसीलिये उन्होंने उसे उसी समय फेंक दिया। प्रभु ने उसी समय उनके चरणों में प्रणाम किया। वे लज्जितभाव से कहने लगे- ‘आप हमें प्रणाम न करें। आप तो साक्षात ईश्वर हैं।’
प्रभु ने कहा- ‘आप हमारे गुरु हैं, आपको भी प्रणाम न करेंगे तो और किसे करेंगे। हमारे तो साकार भगवान आप ही हैं।’
भारती जी ने कहा- ‘विधि-निषेध तो साधारण लोगों के लिये हैं। आपका गुरु हो ही कौन सकता है?
आप स्वयं ही जगत के गुरु हैं।’ इस प्रकार परस्पर एक दूसरे की स्तुति करने लगे। भारती जी वहीं महाप्रभु के समीप ही रहने लगे। प्रभु ने उनकी भिक्षा आदि की सभी व्यवस्था कर दी।
इसके थोड़े ही दिनों बाद श्रीईश्वरपुरी जी के शिष्य काशीश्वर गोस्वामी भी तीर्थ यात्रा करके महाप्रभु के समीप आ गये। वे शरीर से हृष्ट पुष्ट तथा बलवान थे। प्रभु के प्रति उनका अत्यधिक स्नेह था। उनको भी प्रभु ने अपने समीप ही रखा। इस प्रकार चारों ओर से भक्त आ आकर प्रभु की सेवा में उपस्थित होने लगे।
श्रीजगन्नाथ जी के मन्दिर में नित्यप्रति हजारों आदमियों की भीड़ लगी रहती है। पर्व के दिनों में तो लोगों को दर्शन मिलने दुर्लभ हो जाते हैं। महाप्रभु जब दर्शनों के लिये जाते थे, तब काशीश्वर आगे-आगे चलकर भीड़ को हटाते जाते। महाप्रभु ब्रह्मानन्द भारती, परमानन्द पुरी,नित्यानन्द जी, जगदानन्द जी, स्वरूपदामोदर तथा अन्य सभी भक्तों को साथ लेकर दर्शनों के लिये जाया करते थे। उस समय की उनकी शोभा अपूर्व ही होती थीं। प्रभु अपने सम्पूर्ण परिकर के मध्य में नृत्य करते हुए बड़े ही सुन्दर मालूम होते थे। दर्शनार्थी श्रीजगन्नाथ जी के दर्शनों को भूलकर इन्हीं के दर्शन करते रह जाते थे।

Sometimes he goes to stay, sometimes he is under the control of love. Even there the bees in the lake do not forget the lotus flower
No matter how much you hide musk, its smell spreads and people who know its effect can know from a distance that precious musk is present here. Love does not hide by hiding. Love doesn’t need advertising. As soon as the lotus blossoms, honey-loving illusions fall on it on its own. There should be juice. What a dearth of illusions. In winters, light a fire and sit in a free place, the heaters will automatically gather – there will be no need to call them.
Being in the company of Premarnava Gaurangadeva, who had earlier drunk the nectar of love. Where else could they get that juice other than them? Those whose ears were filled with the praise of that unique juice, they were longing to see that ocean of Rasaraj. Hearing the praise of the Lord from the mouth of Sarvabhaum Bhattacharya, Katkadhipati Maharaj Prataparudradev ji was also extremely eager to see the Lord.
All the employees of Shri Jagannath ji’s temple, many eminent men of Puri and many sadhus desired to see the Lord. Hearing the news of the arrival of the Lord in Puri, many loving men including Bhattacharya Sarvabhaum came to meet the Lord. Prabhu lovingly asked everyone to sit. Everyone bowed down at the feet of the Lord and sat down. Sarvabhaum Bhattacharya started introducing everyone separately to the Lord. First of all, he introduced Kashi Mishra – ‘This is Maharaj’s Vice-Chancellor and Rajyapurohit Srikashi Mishra. He has strong affection at the feet of the Lord. When you left, he remained very eager to see you. This house, in which the Lord is staying, belongs to them.’
The Lord looked at Mishra ji with a chitvan full of love and said – ‘Mishra ji, today I am blessed by your darshan. You are like my father. Staying in your house, I will do Kalayapan while doing Krishna Kirtan with the devotees and will always get your darshan. What could be more fortunate for me than this?
Kashi Mishra said with folded hands very politely – ‘ Lord! This house is yours and this servant will always remain near your feet to serve you. You should consider him as your personal servant and do whatever is ordered without any hesitation.’
After this, Sarvabhaum Bhattacharya introduced the servants of Jagannath ji to Lord Jagannath ji’s intimate servant Janardan Bhagwan’s golden cane holder Krishnadas, Pradhan Likhiya Shikhi Maiti, his brother Murari and sister Madhvi and Mahapatra Prahariraj Pradyumna Mishra etc. to the Lord. After getting the introduction of all of them, the Lord started extolling them – ‘You are blessed, who are constantly engaged in the service and worship of the Lord. The main duty of a man is that he should not think of other worldly works even with his mind apart from worshiping Bhagavatseva.
All the devotees bowed down at the feet of the Lord and after getting the permission of Mahaprabhu, they went to their respective places. After this, Mahaprabhu called Krishnadas, the servant who was going with him. On his arrival, Prabhu Bhattacharya targeted him and said to Sarvabhaum- ‘Bhattacharya, you people had sent him with me so that he could take care of my body in unconsciousness, he served me as much as he could; But at one place Kamini got trapped in the greed of Kanchan due to the seduction of some arrogant sages. It left me and went with them. I don’t think it proper to keep the one who is greedy for Kamini Kanchan, who can’t control his senses even that much. That’s why you tell him to go wherever he wants. Now this cannot stay with me.
Hearing such words of the Lord, (Kala) Krishnadas started crying loudly. But the Lord did not accept to keep him with him in any way. Then he got frustrated and went to the shelter of Nityanand ji and started crying by holding his feet. All the devotees like Nityanand etc. were thinking about how the news of the Lord’s return should reach Navadweep. All the devotees of Navadweep are distraught with the sorrow of God’s separation, Sachimata must be getting impatient because of not getting any news of her beloved son, Vishnupriya ji’s one day must be spent like an era, so Krishnadas only Why not send them to Navadweep. With this, the Lord’s command will also be obeyed and all the devotees drowning in the ocean of sorrow will also get ultimate joy.’ Thinking this, he revealed his occult feelings in front of the Lord. The Lord replied – ‘Shripad! I am your dancer, I will dance as you dance. I can’t do anything against your wish. Do whatever you like.
Nityanand ji humbly said – ‘ Lord! We don’t want to disobey your orders. We will gladly obey whatever you command. We can send it to Nabadwip only if you have permission, otherwise not.’
The Lord said- ‘When you wish, then consider my permission only. I cannot be allowed against your will.
After getting the permission of the Lord, Nityanand ji sent Krishnadas to Navadweep by giving him the prasad of Jagannath ji. After getting permission from Krishnadas Nityanand ji and paying obeisance at the lotus feet of the Lord, he left for Navadweep. Here Mahaprabhu stayed with the devotees in Puri and started doing bhajan-kirtan regularly. Many devotees of Puri came and started thanking themselves by seeing the Lord. When Raja Bhavanand ji, the father of Rai Ramanand ji, heard the news of the Lord’s arrival, he along with his four sons came to see Mahaprabhu. Prabhu was very happy after getting his introduction and expressed his happiness and started saying – Those who have sons who are devotees of God like Ramanand, those great men are worshipable by the gods, you are really blessed, you are like Maharaj Pandu, the five sons are your five. Pandavas are Rai Ramanand is truthful, pious and a devotee of the Lord like Yudhishthira. Your housewife is like Kunti Devi. I am very happy to meet you. You consider me as your son like Ramanand ji.
With folded hands, Bhavanand ji said- ‘I Shudradham, I never consider myself entitled to this infinite grace of the Lord. You are a devotee, Purifier is your famous name, in order to make your name meaningful, you are showing your unnecessary blessings to a worldly person like me.
Lord! This is my repeated prayer at your holy feet that give this adham the shelter of your feet. I am a slave of your feet along with my family. Whenever there is any order, say it without any hesitation. Saying this, King Bhavanand ji appointed his youngest son Shrivaninath ji to serve the Lord forever. Prabhu accepted Vaninath and Vaninath ji started living mostly in the service of Prabhu.
Here Krishnadas (black) with Mahaprasad reached near Sachimata in Navadweep. The mother, who was always thinking of her son, started shedding tears after getting the news of her beloved Sut. Vishnupriya ji also sat near her mother-in-law. Mother started asking all the things of the son one by one. This news spread in the whole city in a moment. Devotees came from all around and started doing sankirtan in the courtyard of Sachimata. In no time, Sachimata’s house became Anand Bhavan. Thousands of devotees started echoing the directions and directions with the deafening blissful sound of ‘Hari Hari’. Someone asked Krishnadas about the news of the Lord’s body, someone wanted to hear the story of the journey, someone used to repeat the same thing twenty times when he would reach Navadweep. In this way, everyone started asking various questions to Krishnadas at the same time. Krishna Das would have answered everyone as per his capacity. He used to narrate the good news of the Lord, told two or four things about his journey and said – ‘Now I will tell everything in my free time.’ All the devotees used to listen to Krishnadas’s words with great interest.
In this way, the day was spent asking for the news of the Lord.
On the second day Shrivas etc. went to Advaitacharya’s house in Shantipur taking Bhaktavrinda Krishnadas and with great joy told the news of the Lord’s return to Puri and also gave him the Mahaprasad sent by the Lord. On receiving the news of the Lord and the Mahaprasad, all the organs of the old Acharya started throbbing with love, he was taking long breaths. Saying this, he became engrossed in love and got up and started chanting loudly. After some time the storm of love ended, then Advaitacharya along with all the other devotees went to Puri and started consulting about seeing the Lord. Everyone decided that they should go soon for the darshan of the Lord.
Readers must not have forgotten the name of Shri Parmanand Puri Maharaj. He had met Mahaprabhu during his journey to the south and with the desire to bathe in the Ganges, left him and came to Navadweep. Prabhu had requested them to come to Puri and live together and they had accepted it with pleasure. After saying goodbye to the Lord, he had come to Navadweep on the south bank of Ganga ji and after coming here he narrated the dialogue of the Lord to Sachimata. The mother was overjoyed to hear the news of the Lord from the mouth of the monk and she honored Puri Maharaj appropriately. Puri Maharaj had stayed in Navadweep for some time on the request of the devotees.
When Krishnadas came to Navadweep with the news of the Lord, you were there, after getting the news of the arrival of the Lord from the mouth of the messenger, Parmanand Puri was really immersed in ecstasy and he started trying to reach near the Lord as soon as possible. He thought ‘we should not wait for the devotees to leave. They are all household chores. It will take months for them to make preparations.’ That’s why we should reach before them and have darshan of the Lord.’ Thinking this, he took a Brahmin devotee of Mahaprabhu named Kamalakant and left for Puri and visited all the pilgrimages on the way. After reaching Puri, Parmanand Ji Maharaj started searching for the Lord. Then he thought- ‘First go to Shri Jagannath ji’s temple and have darshan of God, there you will also find the address of God.’ Thinking this, he went straight towards Shri Jagannath ji’s temple. As soon as he entered the temple, he saw the Lord surrounded by many people. Puri Maharaj proceeded in that direction. Seeing Puri coming from a distance, the Lord got up and bowed at his feet and Puri lovingly hugged him. Both the great men were overjoyed to meet each other and, overwhelmed with joy, started praising each other. The Lord said – ‘ God! Now you should stay there and make us happy with your company.’
Expressing happiness, Puri Maharaj said- ‘What is the purpose of our coming here, we have come here only to take advantage of your company.’ Hearing this, Shri Jagannath ji took Mahaprabhu Puri Maharaj along with him inside the temple. Went for darshan and after darshan came to his abode while circumambulating. After coming there, the Lord gave a free cottage near him for the stay of Shri Parmanand Ji Maharaj and also gave a free servant for his service.
The news of the Lord’s arrival had reached Kashi. Those who were very intimate devotees of Prabhu, as soon as they got the news of Prabhu, they started coming to Puri to be present in His service. One Purushottamacharya of Navadvipa was a very dear devotee of the Lord and a learned Brahmin. He had a lot of love at the feet of Mahaprabhu. When Mahaprabhu retired, he felt very sad. They could not stop the passion of their sorrow, without the Lord, they started seeing the whole rivers and cities deserted. The house, bar and all the worldly things seemed to be running to bite them. Saddened by the separation from the Lord, he went to Srikashidham and there he took the initiation of sannyas from Swami Chaitanyanand Ji Maharaj. His Guru named him after his retirement ‘Swaroop’. The Lord had mixed Damodar in it from behind, that is why he is famous among the devotees by the name of Swaroop Damodar.
Swami Chaitanyanand ji was of the same type as a head-oriented thinker monk, but his disciple Swarupadamodar was a man of supreme heart, heart-oriented and a devotee. That’s why they could not follow the path of the Guru. Gurudev preached the thought and propaganda of Advaita Vedanta as it should be preached to disciples; But his heart yearned for the devotion of Shri Krishna in the form of real love, that is why he could follow the orders of his Gurudev. When he heard that the Lord had returned to Puri after completing his journey to the South, he could not stay in Varanasi and after taking permission from his Gurudev, left for Puri. Walking on foot from Kashi, he reached directly near the Lord. On seeing him, there was no place for the joy of the Lord. Mahaprabhu hugged him and started hugging him again and again with utmost affection. Since then he was always with the Lord.
Swarupadamodar had supernatural devotion at the feet of the Lord. The proud devotees consider him as the second deity. Really all the qualities in him were according to Mahaprabhu. The character of his body was also like that of Mahaprabhu. The body was single and the mind was automatically attracted towards itself. He was very polite, virtuous and kind hearted. He did not like special crowds. Solitude was very dear to him, but leaving the Lord, he could not go anywhere even for a moment. He didn’t have a special conversation with anyone. Apart from being a scholar, he was very serious. Eating with Mahaprabhu, sitting with him and spending all his time in his service. For twelve years, when Mahaprabhu always remained unconscious in separation, then he always used to sleep keeping Mahaprabhu’s head in his lap.
When Mahaprabhu used to start crying due to the pain of separation from Radha, then he used to pacify them with Lalita and kept raving till the whole night by putting his arms around their neck. Truly, the life of Swarupadamodar was very emotional, loving and romantic among Gaur devotees. If he had not stayed with Mahaprabhu continuously like a shadow, then Mahaprabhu’s serious pastimes of twelve years would have remained unmanifested in the world today. He kept writing the daily status of Mahaprabhu in Kadcha (Dainandini). Today the same book, which explains the ultimate happiness and the height of sweetness to the devotees, is famous by the name of Swarupadamodar’s Kadcha.
Mahaprabhu was very affectionate towards him. No one could understand Mahaprabhu’s hidden feelings with the excellence with which he used to understand them. ‘What will be the advice of Mahaprabhu in a certain matter.’ He used to tell it simply and there was almost no mistake in it. Mahaprabhu hated listening to hymns, poems or verses without devotion, so before telling something to Mahaprabhu, it would be told to Swarupadamodar. It was narrated to the Lord from behind only after his permission was received. As he was serious-natured, calm and reclusive, similarly his voice was also very sweet and melodious. He used to sing the verses of Vidyapati Thakur, Mahakavi Chandidas and Gita-Govind etc. devotional texts to Mahaprabhu. Until the Lord did not listen to his posts. Till then he was not satisfied. His qualities are infinite. Only Mahaprabhu could know him. Only Mahaprabhu could know him. That’s why Mahaprabhu was most pleased with his arrival. Prabhu started saying- ‘You have come, how happy I am, I am unable to express it, really I was blind without you. You have given me light by coming. I had always dreamed about you that you have come and you are smiling while standing, so really you have come today. You did a very good deed that you came here. Don’t leave me now.’
Swarupadamodar said slowly in a loving voice – ‘Lord! How can I myself come at your feet. When my sins arose, then only after separating from your feet, I went elsewhere. Now that you have graciously called me, I have come bound in your love and until you keep me at your feet, how can I go anywhere else? Saying this, Swaroop fell at the feet of the Lord. Mahaprabhu lifted him up and kept gently rubbing his hands on his back. From that day Swarupadamodar always remained close to the Lord.
One day a simple man came and bowed down at the feet of the Lord and he stood aside with folded hands. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, Nityananda and many other devotees were sitting near Mahaprabhu at that time. Mahaprabhu asked that humble man – ‘Brother! Who are you and where have you come from?’
That man replied slowly with great simplicity – ‘ Lord! I am a servant of Pujya Shri Ishwari Puri Maharaj. Puri Maharaj used to call me by the name of ‘Govind’. While achieving success, I prayed to him that what is the order for me. Then he ordered me to be in his service. By obeying his orders, I have appeared at your feet. I have another Gurubhai Kashishwar. They have gone on pilgrimage. By doing pilgrimage, they will also stay close to the lotus feet. Now as I am commanded.
Prabhu’s throat filled with tears on hearing this. The corners of his eyes got wet with tears. Remembering the love of Puri Maharaj, he said – ‘Puri Maharaj has always had affection for me. Although don’t know where they went after giving me mantra-diksha; Since then I did not see him again. Still they didn’t forget me. I remembered him till the end. Aha! That great man remembered me in the last time, what more can he be kind to me than this? How far can I praise my fortune, how can I praise my good fortune that the inner Gurudev chanted my name with his voice even while leaving the body. Universal gentleman! You only advise me what to do about them. He has been the servant of my Guru Maharaj, so he is also worshiped by me, how can I get him to serve my body and if I do not keep him near me, then the orders of the Guru are violated. Now you tell me what should I do in such a situation?’
The sovereign said – ‘ Lord! ‘Guroragya Gariyasi’ Guru’s command is the best. Govind is gentle, humble, he has natural affection at your feet. They are expert in service work. That’s why by giving them the unattainable pleasure of serving your body, fulfill the wish of your Guru Maharaj and also give them joy.
The Lord accepted this advice of Bhattacharya and entrusted the work of serving his body to Govind. From that day Govind always used to do all kinds of service to the Lord. He was never separated from the Lord. For twelve years, when the Lord had no sense of the body at all, then Govind used to do all kinds of service the way a mother does all kinds of service to her younger son. He had both affection and servile affection for the Lord. He always used to sleep by keeping the feet of the Lord on his chest. Devotees from Gaud-Desh used to bring different types of beautiful things made for the Lord. They used to give everything to Govind only and with his recommendation they used to reach the Lord. They used to insistently feed the Lord by telling all the things and saying that such and such things were sent by such and such. A true servant like him is very rare in Triloki.
One day the Lord was sitting inside. At the same time Mukund came and said softly – ‘Lord! Shrimat Keshav Bharati Ji Maharaj’s brother ShriBrahmanand Ji Bharati Maharaj is standing outside to meet you, if you allow me to bring him here.’
Prabhu quickly said – ‘He is our Gurutulya, we will go out ourselves to take him.’ Saying this, Prabhu came out quickly from his busy schedule. There he saw Brahmanandji Bharti clad in deerskin. Looking around, Mahaprabhu quickly started asking Mukund – ‘Mukund, Mukund! Where is Bharti Maharaj? You used to say, Bharti Maharaj has arrived, give me his darshan quickly.’
Mukund was surprised to hear this. Bharti is standing in front of Mahaprabhu, yet Mahaprabhu is asking about Bharti ji. That’s why he said – ‘Lord! This Bharti Maharaj is standing right in front of you!’
Mahaprabhu said in a tone of firmness- ‘No, never; you are lying Well, Bharti Maharaj can show off by wearing antelope skin like this.’ Hearing these words of the Lord, everyone started looking at the Lord with astonishment. Bharti Maharaj understood that Lord didn’t find this deer skin of mine interesting, so he threw it away at the same time. At the same time the Lord bowed down at his feet. They started saying with shame – ‘ You don’t bow down to us. You are a real God.’
The Lord said – ‘ You are our teacher, if we don’t bow down to you too, then who else will we bow down. You are our real God.
Bharti ji said- ‘Law and prohibition are for ordinary people. Who can be your teacher?
You yourself are the teacher of the world.’ Thus they started praising each other. Bharti ji started living there near Mahaprabhu. The Lord made all arrangements for his alms etc.
A few days after this, Kashishwar Goswami, the disciple of Shri Ishwarpuri ji also came near Mahaprabhu after doing a pilgrimage. He was physically fit and strong. He had great affection for the Lord. The Lord also kept them close to Him. In this way, devotees came from all around and started attending the service of the Lord.
There is a crowd of thousands of people daily in the temple of Shri Jagannath ji. During festivals, it becomes rare for people to get darshan. When Mahaprabhu used to go for darshan, then Kashishwar used to walk in front to remove the crowd. Mahaprabhu Brahmanand Bharti, Parmanand Puri, Nityanand ji, Jagadanand ji, Swarupadamodar and all other devotees used to go for darshan. His beauty of that time was unique. The Lord looked very beautiful while dancing in the midst of all His entourage. The visitors used to forget the darshan of Shri Jagannath ji and kept on seeing him only.
