[भज] निताई-गौर राधेश्याम [जप] हरेकृष्ण हरेराम
रघुनाथदास जी को प्रभु के दर्शन
कान्ताकटाक्षविशिखा न लुनन्ति यस्य
चित्तं न निर्दहति कोपकृशानुतापः।
कर्षन्ति भूरिविषयाश्च न लोभपाशै-
र्लोकत्रयं जयति कृत्स्नमिदं स धीरः।।
कितनी सुन्दर कल्पना है! उन महापुरुषों का हृदय कितना स्वच्छ और पवित्र होगा, जिन के हृदय में से काम, क्रोध और लोभ-ये तीनों राक्षस निकल गये हों, मन-मन्दिर को अपवित्र बनाने वाले इन दैत्यों के निकलते ही काँच का बना हुआ यह देवालय एकदम स्वच्छ बन जाता है, विषय-विकारों की धूलि से मलिन हुआ यह मन्दिर इन महापापी पेटुओं के चले जाने पर प्रेमरूपी अमृत में अपने -आप ही धुलकर चमचमा ने लगता है, तब उस में प्राणप्यारे आकर विराजमान हो जाते हैं, मन्दिर में उन की प्राण-प्रतिष्ठा होते ही यह देहरूपी बाहरी बरामदा भी उसके दिव्य प्रकाश से चमकने लगता है। अहा! जिस महाभाग के हृदय में प्यारे की त्रैलोक्यपावनी मूर्ति की प्राणप्रतिष्ठा ही चुकी है, उसके चरणस्पर्श से ही विकार एकदम भाग जाते हैं, अहा! उन पतितपावन महानुभावों का जीवन धन्य है।
संसार में सुन्दर दीख ने वाले चमक-दमकयुक्त और स्वच्छ- से प्रतीत होने वाले सभी पदार्थ कामोद्दीपन करने वाले हैं। ये पुरुषों को हठात अपनी ओर आकर्षित कर लेते हैं। उनमें से मादक किरणें निकलकर मनुष्यों के मन को बरबस मोह में फँसा लेती हैं। कोई धीर पुरुष ही उनके आकर्षण से बच सकते हैं, वे मनुष्य नहीं साक्षात ईश्वर हैं, नररूप में नारायण हैं, शरीरधारी भगवान हैं, उनकी चरण-धूलि परम भाग्यवान पुरुषों को ही मिल सकती है। महात्मा रघुनाथदास जी उन्हीं पुरुषों में से एक हैं।
महात्मा रघुनाथदास जी के पिता दो भाई थे, हिरण्य मजूमदार और गोवर्धन मजूमदार। ये दोनों ही भाई बड़े ही समझदार, कार्यकुशल और लोक-व्यवहार में परम प्रवीण थे। हम पहले ही बता चुके हैं कि उनक दिनों राजा की ओर से गांवों को ठेका दिया जाता था और ठेका लेने वाले भूम्यधिपति या जमींदार प्रायः कायस्थ या मुसलमान ही होते थे, ये दोनों भाई भी कुलीन कायस्थ थे और बादशाह की ओर से इन्हें ‘मजूमदार’ की उपाधि मिली थी। ये वर्तमान तीसबीघा नामक नगर के समीप सप्तग्राम नाम के ग्राम में रहते थे। उन दिनों सप्तग्राम गंगातट पर होने के कारण वाणिज्य-व्यापार की एक अच्छी मण्डी समझा जाता था, कारण कि उन दिनों व्यापार प्रायः नौ काओं द्वारा ही होता था। इनके इलाके की उस समय की आमदनी लगभग बीस लाख रूपये सालाना की थी, उस में से ये बारह लाख तो बादशाह को दे देते थे और शेष आठ लाख अपने पास रख लेते थे।
उन दिनों आठ लाख की आमदनी बहुत अधिक समझी जाती थी, आज की एक करोड़ की आमदनी से भी बढ़कर उन दिनों के आठ लाख थे। इन दोनों भाइयों की बादशाह के दरबार में खूब प्रतिष्ठा थी और इन की बात का सब कोई पूर्ण विश्वास करते थे। इतने धनिक होने पर भी ये लोग पूरे आस्तिक थे। इनके दरबार में विद्वान पण्डितों का खूब सम्मान किया जाता और बहुत-से ब्राह्मण पण्डित आश्रय से अपनी आजीविका चलाते थे। महाप्रभु के पिता पण्डित जगन्नाथ मिश्र की भी ये लोग कुछ-न-कुछ सेवा करते ही रहते थे तथा नवद्वीप के बहुत-से पण्डित इनके यहाँ आते-जाते रहते थे। श्री अद्वैताचार्य के चरणों में इन दोनों भाइयों की पहले से ही भक्ति थी, कारण कि इनके कुलपुरोहित श्री बलराम आचार्य के साथ अद्वैताचार्य की बहुत अधिक प्रगाढ़ता थी इसीलिये महात्मा हरिदास कभी-कभी सप्तग्राम में जाकर बलराम आचार्य के घर ठहर जाते। आचार्य इनकी नाम-निष्ठापर मुग्ध थे, वे इन्हें पुत्र की भाँति स्नेह करते थे, इसी कारण ये दोनों जमींदार भाई भी हरिदास जी के प्रति श्रद्धा के भाव रखने लगे। हिरण्यदास निःसन्तान थे, केवल गोवर्धनदास के ही एक सन्तान थी और उसी सन्तान से वे जगद्वन्द्य और अमर हो गये।
महात्मा रघुनाथदास के पिता होने का लोकविख्यात सौभाग्य इन्हीं श्री गोवर्धनदास जी को प्राप्त हुआ था। बालक रघुनाथदास के पहले से ही बड़े तेजस्वी और होनहार प्रतीत होते थे। अपने कुल में अकेले ही होने के कारण चाचा तथा पिता का इनके ऊपर अत्यधिक स्नेह था। बालकपन से ही इनके स्वभाव में गम्भीरता थी, ये बहुत ही कम बातें करते, कभी किसी से अपशब्द नहीं कहते, बड़ोंके सामने सदा नम्र रहते। राजपुत्र होने के कारण वैसे ही बड़े सुन्दर और कोमलांग थे, फिर इतनी बड़ी नम्रता ने तो सोने में सुगन्ध का काम दिया। जो भी इनकी मोहिनी मूर्ति को देखता वही मुग्ध हो जाता। पिता ने अपने पुत्र को प्रसिद्ध पण्डित बनाने की इच्छा से अपने कुलगुरु बलराम आचार्य के समीप संस्कृत पढ़ने भेजा। विनयी रघुनाथ अपनी पोथियों को स्वयं लेकर आचार्य के घर पढ़ने जाने लगे। उन दिनों महात्मा हरिदास जी आचार्य के घर पर ही रहकर अहर्निश जोर-जोर से भगवन्नामों का उच्चारण किया करते थे। सरल स्वभाव वाले कोमल प्रकृति के रघुनाथदास पर हरिदास जी की धर्मनिष्ठा का बड़ा भारी प्रभाव पड़ा। वे घंटो एकटक-भाव से हरिदास जी के मुखमण्डल की ओर निहारते और उनके साथ कभी-कभी बेसुध होकर कीर्तन भी करने लगते। हरिदास जी के हृदय में भी बालक रघुनाथदास जी की सरलता और भावुकता ने अपना घर बना लिया। वे मन-ही-मन उस जमींदार के कुमार को प्यार करने लगे।
धीरे-धीरे रघुनाथदास बड़े हुए। उनके मन को इतना अतुल वैभव अपनी ओर आकर्षित नहीं कर सका। विषय-भोग उन्हें काटने के लिये दौड़ने लगे और उनका मन-मधुप अप्राकृतिक सजे हुए परम रमणीक उद्यान को छोड़कर खुले हुए वनों में स्वच्छभाव से विचरण करने के निमित्त व्याकुल होने लगा। जिन सोने-चांदी के ठीकरों को सर्वस्व समझकर लोग बुरे- से-बुरे कामों को करने में भी आगा-पीछा नहीं करते और उन की प्राप्ति के निमित्त प्राणों की बाजी लगाने में भी कभी संकोच नहीं करते, उन्हीं स्वर्ण के सिक्कों को रघुनाथदास जी अपने पथ के कण्टक समझते थे। उनका मन राज- काज में बिलकुल नहीं लगता था, वे तो परमार्थ-पथ को परिष्कृत करने वाले सत्संग के लिये तड़पते रहते थे। परिवार वालों को इन का यह व्यवहार अरुचिकर प्रतीत होता था, वे इन्हें भाँति-भाँति के संसारी प्रलोभन देते थे, अनेक-अनेक प्रकार की भोग्य-सामग्रियों द्वारा इनके मन को उन में फंसाना चाहते थे, किन्तु उन के सभी प्रयत्न निष्फल हुए। जो मधुरातिमधुर मिश्री का आस्वादन कर रहा है, उसे गुड़ देकर अपने वश में करना मुर्खता ही है। सभी को इन की ऐसी दशा पर चिन्ता हई। उस समय महाप्रभु संन्यास लेकर शान्तिपुर में अद्वैताचार्य के घर ठहरे हुए थे, अपने पिता की आज्ञा लेकर ये उस समय प्रभु के दर्शन करने को गये थे और चार-पांच दिन प्रभु के चरणों के समीप रह भी गये थे। महाप्रभु तो पूरे पारखी थे, वे इन के रंग-ढंग से ही ताड़ गये कि यह जन्मसिद्ध पुरुष है। संसार में यह चिरकाल तक संसारी बनकर नहीं रह सकता। फिर भी प्रभु ने इन्हें समझा-बुझाकर अनासक्त-भाव से गृहस्थी में रहकर संसारी काम करते रहने का उपदेश कर के घर लौटा दिया।
पिता ने जब देखा कि पुत्र का चित्त संसारी कामों में नहीं लगता तब उन्होंने एक बहुत ही सुन्दरी कन्या से इन का विवाह कर दिया। गोवर्धनदास धनी थे, राजा और प्रजा दोनों के प्रीति-भाजन थे, सभी लोग उन्हें प्रतिष्ठा की दृष्टि से देखते थे। राजाओं के समान उनका वैभव था। इसलिये उन्हें अपने पुत्र के लिये सुन्दर- से-सुन्दर पत्नी खोजने में कठिनता नहीं हुई। उकना ख्याल था कि रघुनाथ की युवा अवस्था है, वह परम सुन्दरी पत्नी पाकर अपनी सारी उदासीनता को भूल जायगा और उस के प्रेमपाश में बँधकर संसारी हो जायगा, किन्तु विषय-भोगों को ही सर्वस्व समझने वाले पिता को क्या पता था कि इस की शादी तो किसी दूसरे के साथ पहले ही हो चुकी है, उसके सौन्दर्य के सामने इन संसारी सुन्दरियों को सौन्दर्य तुच्छातितुच्छ है। पिता का यह भी प्रयत्न विफल ही हुआ। परम सुन्दरी पत्नी रघुनाथदास को अपने प्रेमपाश में नहीं फंसा सकी। रघुनाथदास उसी प्रकार संसार से उदासीन ही बने रहे।
अब जब रघुनाथदास जी ने सुना कि प्रभु वृन्दावन नहीं जा सके हैं, वे राम केलि से लौटकर अद्वैताचार्य के घर ठहरे हुए हैं; तब तो इन्होंने बड़ी ही नम्रता के साथ अपने पूज्य पिता के चरणों में प्रार्थना की कि मुझे महाप्रभु के दर्शनों की आज्ञा मिलनी चाहिये। महाप्रभु के दर्शन कर के मैं शीघ्र ही लौट आऊंगा।
इस बात को सुनते ही गोवर्धनदास किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ हो गये, किन्तु वे अपने बराबर के युवक पुत्र को जबरदस्ती रोकना भी नहीं चाहते थे, इसलिये आँखों में आंसू भरकर उन्होंने कहा- ‘बेटा! हमारे कुल का तू ही एकमात्र दीपक है। हम सभी लोगों को एकमात्र तेरा ही सहारा है। तू ही हमारे जीवन का आधार है। तुझे देखे बिना हम जीवित नहीं रह सकते। मैं महाप्रभु के दर्शनों से तुझे रोकना नहीं चाहता, किन्तु इस बूढ़े की यही प्रार्थना है कि तू मेरे इन सफेद बालों की ओर देखकर जल्दी से लौट आना, कहीं घर छोड़कर बाहर जाने का निश्चय मत करना।
पिता के मोह में पगे हुए इन वचनों को सुनकर आँखों में आंसू भरे हुए रघुनाथदास जी ने कहा- ‘पिता जी! मैं क्या करूँ, न जा ने क्यों मेरा संसारी कामों में एकदम चित्त ही नहीं लगता। मैं बहुत चाहते हूँ कि मेरे कारण आप को किसी प्रकार का कष्ट न हो, किन्तु मैं अपने वश में नहीं हूँ। कोई बलात मेरे मन को अपनी ओर आकर्षित कर रहा है। आप की आज्ञा शिरोधर्य करता हूँ, मैं शीघ्र ही लौट आऊँगा।’ पुत्र के ऐसे आश्वासन देने पर गोवर्धनदास ने अपने पुत्र के लिये एक सुन्दर-सी पाल की मंगायी। दस-बीस विश्वासी नौकर उन के साथ दिये और बड़े ही ठाट-बाट के साथ राजकुमार की भाँति बहुत-सी भेंट की सामग्री के साथ उन्हें प्रभु के दर्शनों के लिये भेजा। जहाँ से शान्तिपुर दीख ने लगा, वहीं से ये पालकी पर से उतर गये और नंगे पावों ही धूप में चलकर प्रभु के समीप पहुँचे। दूर से ही भूमि पर लोटकर इन्होंने प्रभु के चरणों में साष्टांग प्रणाम किया। प्रभु ने जल्दी से उठकर इन्हें छाती से चिपटा लिया और धीरे-धीरे इनके काले घुंघराले बालों को अपनी उँगलियों से सुलझाने लगे। प्रभु ने इनका माथा सूंघा और अपनी गोदी में बिठाकर बालकों की भाँति पूछने लगे- ‘तुम इतनी धूप में अकेले कैसे आये, क्या पैदल आये हो?’
रघुनाथदास जी ने इन प्रश्नों में से किसी का भी कुछ उत्तर नहीं दिया, वे अपने अश्रुजल से प्रभु के काषाय-वस्त्रों को भिगो रहे थे। इतने में ही रघुनाथदास जी के साथी सेवकों ने प्रभु के चरणों में आकर साष्टांग प्रणाम किया और भेंट की सभी सामग्री प्रभु के सम्मुख रख दी। महाप्रभु धीरे-धीरे रघुनाथदास जी के स्वर्ण के समान कान्तियुक्त शरीर पर अपना प्रेममय, सुखमय और ममत्वमय कोमल कर फिरा रहे थे। प्रभु की ऐसी असीम कृपा पाकर रोते-रोते रघुनाथ जी कहने लगे- ‘प्रभो! पितृ-गृह मेरे लिये सचमुच कारावास बना हुआ है। मेरे ऊपर सदा पहरा रहता है, बिना पूछे मैं कहीं आ-जा नहीं सकता, स्वतन्त्रता से घूम-फिर नहीं सकता। हे जग के त्राता! मेरे इस गृहबन्धन को छिन्न-भिन्न कर दीजिये। मुझे यातना से छुड़ाकर अपने चरणों की शरण प्रदान कीजिये। आप के चरणों का चिन्तन करता हुआ ही अपने जीवन को व्यतीत करूं, ऐसा आशीर्वाद दीजिये।’
प्रभु ने प्रेम पूर्वक कहा- ‘रघुनाथ! तुम पागल तो नहीं हो गये हो, अरे! घर भी कहीं बन्धन हो सकता है? उसमें से अपनापन निकाल दो, बस, फिर रह ही क्या जाता है। जब तक ममत्व है, तभी तक दुःख है। जहाँ ममत्व दूर हुआ कि सब अपना-ही-अपना है। आसक्ति छोड़कर व्यवहार करो। धन, स्त्री तथा कुटुम्बियों में अपनेपन के भाव को भुलाकर व्यवहार करो।’
रघुनाथदास जी ने रोते-रोते कहा- ‘प्रभो! मुझे बच्चों की भाँति बहकाइये नहीं। यह मैं खूब जानता हूँ कि आप सब के मन के भावों को समझकर उसे जैसे अधिकारी समझते हैं, वैसा ही उपदेश करते हैं। बाल-बच्चों में अनासक्त रहकर और उन्हीं के साथ रहते हुए भजन करना उसी प्रकार है जिस प्रकार नदी में घुसने पर भी शरीर न भीगे। प्रभो! ऐसा व्यवहार तो ईश्वर के सिवा साधारण मनुष्य कभी नहीं कर सकता। आप जो उपदेश कर रहे हैं, वह उन लोगों के लिये हैं, जिनकी संसारी विषयों में थोड़ी-बहुत वासना बनी हुई है। मैं आप के चरणों को स्पर्श करके कहता हूँ, कि मेरी संसारी विषयों में बिलकुल ही आसक्ति नहीं। मुझे घर कर अपार वैभव काटने के लिये दौड़ता है, अब मैं अधिक काल घर के बन्धन में नहीं रह सकता।’ प्रभु ने कहा- ‘तुमने जो कुछ कहा है, वह सब ठीक है, किंतु यह मर्कट-वैराग्य ठीक नहीं। कभी-कभी मनुष्यों को क्षणिक वैराग्य होता है, जो विपत्ति पड़ने पर एकदम नष्ट हो जाता है, इसीलिये कुछ दिन घर में और रहो, तब देखा जायगा।’
अत्यन्त ही करूण-स्वर में रघुनाथदास जी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो! आपके चरणों की श्रण में आने पर फिर वैराग्य नष्ट ही कैसे हो सकता है ? क्या अमृत का पान करने पर भी पुरुष को जरा-मृत्यु का भय हो सकता है? आप अपने चरणों में मुझे स्थान दीजिये।’
प्रभु ने धीरे से प्रेम के स्वर में कहा- ‘अच्छी बात है देखा जायगा, अब तो तुम घर जाओ, मेरा अभी वृन्दावन जानेका विचार है। यहाँ से लौटकर पुरी जाऊँगा और वहाँ से बहुत ही शीघ्र वृन्दावन जाना चाहता हूँ। वृन्दावन से जब लौट आऊँ, तब तुम आकर मुझे पुरी में मिलना।’ प्रभु के ऐसे आश्वासन से रघुनाथदास जी को कुछ सन्तोष हुआ। वे सात दिनों तक शान्तिपुर में ही प्रभु के चरणों में रहे। वे इन दिनों पलभर के लिये भी प्रभु से पृथक नहीं होते थे। प्रभु के भिक्षा कर लेने पर उनका उच्छिष्ट प्रसाद पाते और प्रभु के चरणों के नीचे ही शयन करते। इस प्रकार सात दिनों तक रहकर प्रभु की आज्ञा लेकर वे फिर सप्तग्राम के लिये लौट गये।
श्री मन्माधवेन्द्रपुरी की पुण्य-तिथि समीप ही थी, इसलिये अद्वैताचार्य के प्रार्थना करने पर प्रभु दस दिनों तक शान्तिपुर में ठहरे रहे। नवद्वीप आदि स्थानों से बहुत- से भक्त प्रभु के दर्शनों के लिये आया करते थे। शचीमाता भी अपने पुत्र को फिर से देखने के लिये आ गयीं और सात दिनों तक अपने हाथों से प्रभु को भिक्षा कराती रहीं। इसी बीच एक दिन महाप्रभु गंगा पार करके पण्डित गौरीदास जी से मिलने गये। वे गौरांग के चरणों में बड़ी श्रद्धा रखते थे। उन्होंने प्रभु से वरदान मांगा कि आप निताई और निमाई दोनों भाई मेरे ही यहाँ रहें। तब प्रभु ने उन के यहाँ प्रतिमा में रहना स्वीकार किया। उन्होंने निमाई और निताई की प्रतिमा स्थापित की, जिन में उन के विश्वास के अनुसार अब भी दोनों भाई विराजमान हैं। ये ही महाप्रभु गौरांगदेव और नित्यानन्द जी की आदिमूर्ति बतायी जाती है। ये दोनों मूर्ति बड़ी ही दिव्य हैं। कालना से लौटकर प्रभु फिर शान्तिुपर में आ गये, वहाँ से आपने सभी भक्तों को विदा कर दिया और आप अपने अन्तरंग दो-चार भक्तों को साथ लेकर श्रीजगन्नाथपुरी के लिये चल पड़े।

whose arrows of lovely glances do not harvest The mind is not burnt by the lean remorse of anger. They are pulled by many things and not by the ropes of greed- He who is steadfast conquers the three worlds and this whole.
What a beautiful idea! How clean and pure would be the heart of those great men, from whose heart lust, anger and greed – these three demons have been removed, as soon as these demons who make the mind-temple impure, this temple made of glass becomes completely clean. This temple, dirty with the dust of sex-disorders, after the departure of these great sinful gourmets, automatically gets washed in the nectar of love, then the dear ones come and sit in it, their life-prestige is there in the temple. At the same time, this Dehrupi outer verandah also starts shining with its divine light. Aha! The great part in whose heart the Trilokyapavani idol of the beloved has already been consecrated, the disorders run away at the very touch of his feet, aha! Blessed is the life of those degenerate great men.
All the beautiful-looking, shiny and clean-looking things in the world are aphrodisiacs. They suddenly attract men towards them. Intoxicating rays emanate from them and entangle the minds of human beings in endless delusion. Only a patient man can escape from his attraction, he is not a human, he is God in person, Narayan in human form, God with a body, only the most fortunate men can get the dust of his feet. Mahatma Raghunathdas ji is one of those men.
Mahatma Raghunathdas ji’s father had two brothers, Hiranya Majumdar and Govardhan Majumdar. Both these brothers were very intelligent, efficient and highly proficient in public behavior. We have already told that in those days, contracts were given to the villages on behalf of the king and the landlords or landlords who took the contract were usually Kayasthas or Muslims, these two brothers were also elite Kayasthas and were called ‘Majumdar’ by the king. Got the title. He lived in a village named Saptagram near the present Tisbigha town. In those days, Saptagram being on the banks of the Ganges was considered a good market for commerce, because in those days trade was mostly done by boats only. The annual income of his area at that time was about twenty lakh rupees, out of which he used to give twelve lakhs to the emperor and kept the remaining eight lakhs with himself.
In those days an income of eight lakhs was considered very high, eight lakhs in those days was more than today’s income of one crore. These two brothers had a lot of prestige in the king’s court and everyone believed their words completely. Despite being so rich, these people were complete believers. Scholar pundits were highly respected in his court and many Brahmins used to run their livelihood from the shelter of pundits. These people used to do some or the other service to Mahaprabhu’s father Pandit Jagannath Mishra and many pundits from Navadweep used to come and go to their place. Both these brothers already had devotion at the feet of Shri Advaitacharya, because Advaitacharya had a lot of intensity with their Vice-Chancellor Shri Balaram Acharya, that is why Mahatma Haridas would sometimes go to Saptagram and stay at Balaram Acharya’s house. Acharya was fascinated by his name-loyalty, he used to love him like a son, that’s why both these landlord brothers also started having feelings of devotion towards Haridas ji. Hiranyadas was childless, Govardhandas had only one child and from that child he became worldly and immortal.
It was Shri Govardhandas who had the well-known fortune of being the father of Mahatma Raghunathdas. The child looked very bright and promising even before Raghunathdas. Being the only one in his family, his uncle and father had a lot of affection for him. There was seriousness in his nature since childhood, he used to talk very little, never used bad words with anyone, always remained humble in front of elders. Because of being the son of a prince, he was very handsome and soft, then such great humility gave the work of fragrance in gold. Whoever saw his idol of Mohini would have been mesmerized. The father sent his son to study Sanskrit near his Vice-Chancellor Balram Acharya with the desire to make his son a famous scholar. Vinay Raghunath himself took his notebooks and started going to Acharya’s house to study. In those days, while staying at Mahatma Haridas ji Acharya’s house, Aharnish used to chant the names of God loudly. Haridas ji’s piety had a huge impact on Raghunathdas of simple-natured gentle nature. He used to stare at Haridas ji’s face for hours in a daze and sometimes used to sing kirtan with him in a trance. The simplicity and sentimentality of child Raghunathdas ji made its home in the heart of Haridas ji as well. They started loving the kumar of that landlord.
Raghunathdas grew up gradually. Such incomparable splendor could not attract his mind. Sense-indulgences started running to bite them and their mind-honey started getting distraught to leave the most delightful garden decorated unnaturally and wander cleanly in the open forests. Raghunathdas ji used those gold and silver coins, considering them to be everything, people do not hesitate to do even the worst of deeds and never hesitate to risk their lives for their attainment. Used to understand the thorns of the path. His mind was not at all engaged in politics, he used to yearn for the satsang which refined the path of the Supreme. His family members used to find his behavior distasteful, they used to give him various worldly temptations, wanted to trap his mind in them with many types of indulgences, but all his efforts were in vain. The one who is relishing Madhuratimadhur Mishri, it is foolish to control him by giving him jaggery. Everyone was worried about his condition. At that time Mahaprabhu was staying at Advaitacharya’s house in Shantipur after retirement, he went to see the Lord at that time after taking the permission of his father and stayed near the feet of the Lord for four-five days. Mahaprabhu was a complete connoisseur, he was palmed by his appearance that he is a born man. In the world, he cannot remain worldly for ever. Nevertheless, the Lord persuaded them and sent them back to their home after exhorting them to stay at home and do worldly work without any attachment.
When the father saw that the son’s mind was not engaged in worldly works, he married him to a very beautiful girl. Govardhandas was rich, loved by both the king and the people, everyone looked at him with respect. His splendor was like that of kings. That’s why he had no difficulty in finding the most beautiful wife for his son. He had thought that Raghunath’s young age, he would forget all his indifference by getting the most beautiful wife and would become worldly by being tied in her love, but the father who considered the worldly pleasures as everything, did not know that her marriage The beauty of these worldly beauties is insignificant in front of her beauty, which has already happened to someone else. This attempt of the father also failed. The most beautiful wife could not trap Raghunathdas in her love trap. Raghunathdas remained indifferent to the world in the same way.
Now when Raghunathdas ji heard that Prabhu could not go to Vrindavan, he returned from Ram Keli and stayed at Advaitacharya’s house; Then he humbly prayed at the feet of his respected father that he should be allowed to have the darshan of Mahaprabhu. I will return soon after seeing Mahaprabhu.
On hearing this, Govardhandas became perplexed, but he did not even want to forcefully stop his equal young son, so with tears in his eyes he said – ‘Son! You are the only lamp of our clan. You are the only support for all of us. You are the basis of our life. We cannot live without seeing you. I don’t want to stop you from seeing Mahaprabhu, but this old man’s request is that you should come back quickly after seeing my white hair, don’t decide to leave the house and go out.
Raghunathdas ji with tears in his eyes after listening to these words of father’s fascination said – ‘Father! What should I do, I don’t know why I am not interested in worldly works at all. I want very much that you should not suffer any kind of trouble because of me, but I am not in my control. Some force is attracting my mind towards itself. I obey your orders, I will return soon.’ On giving such assurance of the son, Govardhandas asked for a beautiful sail for his son. Ten-twenty faithful servants accompanied him and sent him to the Lord’s darshan with many gifts like a prince with great pomp. From where Shantipur was seen, from there he got down from the palanquin and reached near the Lord walking barefoot in the sun. Returning to the ground from a distance, he prostrated at the feet of the Lord. Prabhu quickly got up and hugged her to his chest and slowly started untangling her black curly hair with his fingers. The Lord smelled his forehead and made him sit on his lap and started asking like a child – ‘How did you come alone in this hot sun, did you come on foot?’
Raghunathdas ji did not answer any of these questions, he was soaking the orange clothes of the Lord with his tears. In the meantime, the fellow servants of Raghunathdas ji prostrated themselves at the feet of the Lord and placed all the gifts in front of the Lord. Mahaprabhu was slowly moving around Raghunathdas ji’s body shining like gold with his love, happiness and tenderness. Raghunath ji started crying after getting such infinite grace of God – ‘ Lord! The ancestral house has really become a prison for me. There is always a guard over me, I cannot come and go anywhere without being asked, I cannot roam freely. O savior of the world! Break this home bondage of mine. Deliver me from torture and give me the shelter of your feet. Give me such a blessing that I spend my life thinking of your feet.’
The Lord said lovingly – ‘ Raghunath! You haven’t gone mad, have you? Can there be bondage at home too? Remove the familiarity from it, that’s all, then what remains. As long as there is affection, only then there is sorrow. Where the attachment has gone away that everything is one’s own. Leave attachment and behave. Behave by forgetting the sense of belongingness in money, women and family members.
Raghunathdas ji said while crying – ‘ Lord! Don’t mislead me like children. I know this very well that after understanding the feelings of all of you, you preach as the authorities consider them. Doing bhajan while remaining unattached to children and staying with them is like the body does not get wet even after entering the river. Lord! An ordinary human being can never behave like this except God. What you are preaching is for those people who have a little lust for worldly subjects. Touching your feet, I say that I have absolutely no attachment to worldly subjects. Makes me go home and runs to reap immense wealth, now I can’t stay in the bondage of home for long.’ The Lord said- ‘Whatever you have said is all right, but this mercantilism is not right. Sometimes humans have momentary quietness, which is completely destroyed when calamity strikes, that’s why stay at home for a few more days, then it will be seen.’
Raghunathdas ji said in a very compassionate voice – ‘Lord! How can disinterest be destroyed by coming under the shelter of your feet? Can a man be afraid of early death even after drinking nectar? You give me a place at your feet.
The Lord said softly in the voice of love – ‘ It is a good thing, it will be seen, now you go home, I am thinking of going to Vrindavan now. I will return from here to Puri and from there I want to go to Vrindavan very soon. When I return from Vrindavan, then you come and meet me in Puri.’ Raghunathdas ji was somewhat satisfied with such assurance of the Lord. He stayed at the feet of the Lord in Shantipur for seven days. These days he was not separated from the Lord even for a moment. After receiving alms from the Lord, he used to get his leftover prasad and used to sleep under the feet of the Lord. Staying like this for seven days, after taking the permission of the Lord, he again returned to Saptagram.
The death anniversary of Shri Manmadhavendrapuri was near, so on the request of Advaitacharya, the Lord stayed in Shantipur for ten days. Many devotees used to come from places like Navadvipa to have darshan of the Lord. Sachimata also came to see her son again and for seven days kept begging the Lord with her own hands. Meanwhile, one day Mahaprabhu crossed the Ganges and went to meet Pandit Gauridas ji. He had great faith in the feet of Gauranga. He sought a boon from the Lord that both you brothers Nitai and Nimai should stay with me. Then the Lord accepted to stay in his place in the idol. They installed the idols of Nimai and Nitai, in which according to their belief the two brothers are still seated. This is said to be the progenitor of Mahaprabhu Gaurangdev and Nityanand ji. Both these idols are very divine. After returning from Kalna, the Lord again came to Shantupar, from there you bid farewell to all the devotees and you left for Shri Jagannathpuri with two to four close devotees.
