[भज] निताई-गौर राधेश्याम [जप] हरेकृष्ण हरेराम
श्री शिवानन्द सेन की सहनशीलता
न भवति भवति च न चिरं
भवति चिरं चेत् फले विसंवादी।
कोपः सत्पुरुषाणां
तुल्यः स्नेहेन नीचानाम्।।
पहले तो महापुरुषों को क्रोध होता ही नहीं है यदि किसी विशेष कारणवश क्रोध हो भी जाय तो वह स्थायी नहीं रहता, क्षण भर में ही शान्त हो जाता है। यदि कोई ऐसा ही भारी कारण आ उपस्थित हुआ और महापुरुषों का कोप कुछ काल तक बना रहा तो उसका परिणाम सुखकारी ही होता है। महापुरुषों को बड़ा भारी कोप और नीच पुरुषों का अत्यधिक स्नेह दोनों बराबर ही हैं। बल्कि कुपुरुषों के प्रेम से सत्पुरुषों का क्रोध लाख दर्जे अच्छा है, किन्तु सत्पुरुषों के क्रोध को सहन करने की शक्ति सब किसी में नहीं होती है। कोई परम भाग्यवान क्षमाशील भगवद्भक्त ही महापुरुषों के क्रोध को बिना मन में विकार लाये सहन करने में समर्थ होते हैं और इसीलिये वे संसार में सुयश के भागी बनते हैं। क्योंकि शास्त्रों में मनुष्य का भूषण सुन्दर रूप बताया गया है, सुन्दर रूप भी तभी शोभा पाता है, जब उसके साथ सदगुण भी हों। सदगुणों का भूषण ज्ञान है और ज्ञान का भूषण क्षमा है।[2]चाहे मनुष्य कितना भी बड़ा ज्ञानी क्यों न हो, उसमें कितने ही सदगुण क्यों न हों, उसका रूप कितना ही सुन्दर क्यों न हो, यदि उसमें क्षमा नहीं है, यदि वह लोगों के द्वारा कही हुई कड़वी बातों को प्रसन्नतापूर्वक सहन नहीं कर सकता तो उसका रूप, ज्ञान और सभी प्रकार के सदगुण व्यर्थ ही हैं। क्षमावान तो कोई शिवानन्द जी सेन के समान लाखों-करोड़ों में एक आध ही मिलेंगे। महात्मा शिवानन्द जी तो क्षमा के अवतार ही थे- इसे पाठक नीचे की घटना से समझ सकेंगे।
पाठकों को यह तो पता ही है कि गौड़ीय भक्त रथ यात्रा को उपलक्ष्य बनाकर प्रतिवर्ष ज्येष्ठ के अन्त में अपने स्त्री-बच्चों के सहित श्री जगन्नाथ पुरी में आते थे और बरसात के चार मास बिताकर अन्त में अपने-अपने घरों को लौट जाते थे। उन सबके लाने का, मार्ग में सभी प्रकार के प्रबन्ध करने का भार प्रभु ने शिवानन्द जी को ही सौंप दिया था। वे भी प्रतिवर्ष अपने पास से हजारों रुपये व्यय करके बड़ी सावधानी के साथ भक्तों को अपने साथ लाते थे। सबसे अधिक कठिनाई घाटों पर उतरने की थी। एक एक, दो-दो रुपये उतराई लेने पर भी घाट वाले यात्रियों को ठीक समय पर नहीं उतारते थे। यद्यपि महाप्रभु के देशव्यापी प्रभाव के कारण गौर भक्तों को इतनी अधिक असुविधा नहीं होती थी, फिर भी कोई कोई खोटी बुद्धि वाला घटवारिया इनसे कुछ-न-कुछ अड़ंगा लगा ही देता था। ये बड़े सरल थे, सम्पूर्ण भक्तों का भार इन्हीं के ऊपर था, इसलिये घटवारिया, पहले-पहल इन्हें ही पकड़ते थे।
एक बार नीलाचंल आते समय पुरी के पास ही किसी घटवारिया ने शिवानन्द सेनजी को रोक रखा। वे भक्तों के ठहरने और खाने पीने का कुछ भी प्रबन्ध न कर सके। क्योंकि घटवारियों ने उन्हें वहीं बैठा लिया था। इससे नित्यानन्द जी को उनके ऊपर बड़ा क्रोध आया। एक तो वे दिन भर भूखे थे, दूसरे रास्ता चलकर आये थे, तीसरे भक्तों को निराश्रय भटकते देखने से उनका क्रोध उभड़ पड़ा। वे सेन महाशय करे भली बूरी बातें सुनाने लगे, उसी क्रोध के आवेश में आकर उन्होंने यहाँ तक कह डाला कि- ‘इस शिवानन्द के तीनों पुत्र मर जाये, इसकी धन सम्पत्ति का नाश हो जाय, इसने हमारे तथा भक्तों के रहने और खाने पीने का कुछ भी प्रबन्ध नहीं किया।’
नित्यानन्द जी के क्रोध में दिये हुए ऐसे अभिशाप को सुनकर सेन महाशय की पत्नी को अत्यन्त ही दुःख हुआ, वे फूट फूट कर रोने लगीं। जब बहुत रात्रि बीतने पर घाटवालों से जैसे-तैसे पिण्ड छुड़ाकर शिवानन्द जी अपने बाल-बच्चों के समीप आये तब उनकी धर्मपत्नी ने रोते रोते कहा- ‘गुसाईं ने क्रुद्ध होकर हमें ऐसा भयंकर शाप दे दिया है। हमने उनका ऐसा क्या बिगाड़ा था? अब भी वे क्रुद्ध हो रहे हैं, आप उनके पास न जायँ।’
शिवानन्द जी ने दृढ़ता के साथ पत्नी की बात की अवहेलना करते हुए कहा- ‘पगली कहीं की ! तू उन महापुरुष की महिमा क्या जाने? तेरे तीनों पुत्र चाहे अभी मर जायँ और धन सम्पत्ति की तो मुझे कुछ परवा नहीं। वह तो सब गुसाईं की ही है, वे चाहें तो आज ही सबको छीन लें। मैं अभी उनके पास जाऊँगा और उनके चरण पकड़कर उन्हें शान्त करूँगा।’ यह कहते हुए वे नित्यानन्द जी के समीप चले। उस समय भी नित्यानन्द जी का क्रोध शान्त नहीं हुआ था। वृद्ध शिवानन्द जी को अपनी ओर आते देखकर उनकी पीठ में उठकर जोरों से एक लात मारी। सेन महाशय ने कुछ भी नहीं कहा। उसी समय उनके ठहरने और खाने पीने की समुचित व्यवस्था करके हाथ जोड़े हुए कहने लगे- ‘प्रभो ! आज मेरा जन्म सफल हुआ, जिन चरणों की रज के लिये इन्द्रादि देवता भी तरसते हैं वही चरण आपने मेंरी पीठ से छुआये। मैं सचमुच कृतार्थ हो गया। गुसाईं ! अज्ञान के कारण मेरा जो अपराध हुआ हो, उसे क्षमा करें। मैं अपनी मूर्खतावश आपको क्रुद्ध करने का कारण बना- इस अपराध के लिये मैं लज्जित हूँ। प्रभो ! मुझे अपना सेवक समझकर मेरे समसत अपराधों को क्षमा करें और मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों।’
शिवानन्द जी की इतनी सहनयशीलता, ऐसी क्षमा और ऐसी एकान्तनिष्ठा को देखकर नित्यानन्द जी का हृदय भर आया। उन्होंने जल्दी से उठकर शिवानन्द जी को गले से लगाया और उन्हें आशीर्वाद देते हुए कहने लगे-‘शिवानन्द ! तुम्हीं सचमुच प्रभु के परम कृपापात्र बनने योग्य हो। जिसमें इतनी अधिक क्षमा है वह प्रभु का अवश्य ही अन्तरंग भक्त बन सकता है।’ सचमुच नित्यानन्द जी का यह आशीर्वाद फलीभूत हुआ और प्रभु ने सेन महाशय के ऊपर अपार कृपा प्रदर्शित की। प्रभु ने अपने अच्छिष्ट महाप्रसाद को शिवानन्द जी के सम्पूर्ण परिवार के लिये भिजवाने की गोविन्द को स्वयं आशा दी। इनकी ऐसी ही तपस्या के परिणामस्वरूप तो कवि कर्णपूर-जैसे परम प्रतिभावान महाकवि और भक्त इनके यहाँ पुत्ररूप में उत्पन्न हुए। नित्यानन्द जी का ऐसा बर्ताव शिवानन्द जी सेन के भगिनी-पुत्र श्री कान्त को बहुत ही अरुचिकर प्रतीत हुआ। वह युवक था, शरीर में युवावस्था का नूतन रक्त प्रवाहित हो रहा था, इस बात से उसने अपने मामा का घोर अपमान समझा और इसकी शिकायत करने के निमित्त वह सभी भक्तों से अलग होकर सबसे पहले प्रभु के समीप पहुँचा। बिना वस्त्र उतारे ही वह प्रभु को प्रणाम करने लगा।
इस पर गोविन्द ने कहा- श्री कान्त ! तुम यह शिष्टाचार के विरुद्ध बर्ताव क्यों कर रहे हो? अंगरखे को उतारकर तब साष्टांग प्रणाम किया जाता है। पहले वस्त्रों को उतार लो, रास्ते की थकान मिटा लो, हाथ-मुँह धो लो, तब प्रभु के सम्मुख प्रणाम करने जाना।’ किन्तु उसने गोविन्द की बात नहीं सुनी। प्रभु भी समझ गये अवश्य ही कुछ दाल में काला है, इसलिये उन्होंने गोविन्द से कह दिया- ‘श्री कान्त के लिये क्या शिष्टाचार और नियम, वह जो करता है ठीक ही है, इसे तुम मत रोका। इसी दशा में इसे बातें करने दो।’ इतना कहकर प्रभु उससे भक्तों के सम्बन्ध में बहुत सी बातें पूछने लगे। पुराने भक्तों की बात पूछकर प्रभु ने नवीन भक्तों के सम्बन्ध में पूछा कि अबके बाल भक्तों में से कौन-कौन आया है? प्रभु के पीछे जो बच्चे उत्पन्न हुए थे, वे सभी अबके अपनी अपनी माताओं के साथ प्रभु के दर्शनों की उत्कण्ठा से आ रहे थे। श्रीकान्त ने सभी बच्चों का परिचय देते हुए शिवानन्द जी के पुत्र परमानन्द दास का परिचय दिया और उसकी प्रखर प्रतिभा तथा प्रभु दर्शनों की उत्कण्ठा की भी प्रशंसा की। प्रभु उस बच्चे को देखने के लिये लालायित से प्रतीत होने लगे। इन सभी बातों में श्री कान्त नित्यानन्द जी की शिकायत करना भूल गये। इतने में ही सभी भक्त आ उपस्थित हुए। प्रभु ने सदा की भाँति सबका स्वागत-सत्कार किया और उन्हें रहने के लिये यथायोग्य स्थान दिलाकर सभी के प्रसाद की व्यवस्था करायी।

It doesn’t happen and it doesn’t happen for long If it takes a long time, the fruit is discordant. The wrath of the righteous equal in affection to the lowly.
First of all, great men do not get angry, if they get angry due to any special reason, then it does not remain permanent, it becomes calm in a moment. If such a heavy reason comes and the anger of great men remains for some time, then its result is only pleasant. Great anger of great men and excessive affection of lowly men are both equal. Rather, the anger of good men is a million degrees better than the love of bad men, but not everyone has the power to tolerate the anger of good men. Only a very fortunate forgiving devotee of the Lord is able to tolerate the anger of the great men without bringing disorder in the mind and that is why they become partakers of good fortune in the world. Because in the scriptures, the beauty of man has been described as a beautiful form, a beautiful form also suits only when it is accompanied by virtues. The jewel of virtues is knowledge and the jewel of knowledge is forgiveness. [2] No matter how knowledgeable a man is, how many virtues he may have, how beautiful his appearance may be, if he does not have forgiveness, if he If he cannot tolerate bitter things said by people happily, then his form, knowledge and all kinds of virtues are useless. One who is forgiving like Shivanandji Sen will be found in only one half of the lakhs and crores. Mahatma Sivanand ji was an incarnation of forgiveness – readers will be able to understand this from the following incident.
Readers are already aware that Gaudiya devotees used to come to Shri Jagannath Puri along with their women and children every year at the end of Jyeshtha and return to their respective homes after spending four months of rain. The Lord had entrusted the responsibility of bringing all of them and making all kinds of arrangements on the way to Shivanand ji. He also used to bring devotees with him with great care by spending thousands of rupees every year. The biggest difficulty was getting down on the ghats. Even after unloading one rupee or two rupees, the ghat people did not drop the passengers at the right time. Although due to Mahaprabhu’s country-wide influence, Gaur devotees did not face so much inconvenience, yet some Ghatwariya with a false intelligence used to create some obstacle with them. He was very simple, the burden of all the devotees was on him, that’s why the Ghatwariyas used to catch him first.
Once while coming to Neelachal, a Ghatwariya stopped Shivanand Senji near Puri. They could not make any arrangement for the stay and food of the devotees. Because the Ghatwaris had made him sit there. This made Nityanand ji very angry with him. Firstly, they were hungry for the whole day, secondly, they had come after walking, thirdly, seeing the devotees wandering helplessly, their anger erupted. Sen started telling good and bad things to Mr. Kare, in the same anger, he even said that – ‘All three sons of this Shivanand should die, his wealth should be destroyed, he has destroyed the food and drink of us and the devotees. Didn’t manage anything.
Hearing such a curse given by Nityanand ji in anger, Sen Mahasaya’s wife felt very sad, she started crying bitterly. After a long night passed, when Shivanand ji came near his children after getting rid of the body from the ghatwalas, then his wife said while crying – ‘ Gusain has cursed us in anger. What harm had we done to them? Even now he is getting angry, don’t go near him.’
Shivanand ji strongly disregarding the words of his wife said – ‘The madwoman is somewhere! How can you know the glory of that great man? Even if your three sons die now and I don’t care about wealth. They are all Gusai’s, if they want, they can snatch them all today. I will go to him now and hold his feet and pacify him.’ Saying this he went near Nityanand ji. Even at that time Nityanand ji’s anger had not calmed down. Seeing old Sivanandji coming towards her, she got up and kicked him hard in the back. Sen Mahasaya did not say anything. At the same time, after making proper arrangements for their stay and food and drink, they started saying with folded hands – ‘Lord! Today my birth was successful, you touched my back whose feet even the senses yearn for. I was really grateful. Angry! Forgive me for the crime I have committed due to ignorance. I have caused you to be angry with my foolishness – I am ashamed of this crime. Lord! Please forgive all my crimes considering me as your servant and be pleased with me.’
Nityananda’s heart was filled with tears after seeing Sivananda’s tolerance, forgiveness and solitude. He quickly got up and hugged Shivanand ji and while blessing him said – ‘Sivanand! You are really eligible to become the most blessed of the Lord. One who has so much forgiveness can surely become an intimate devotee of the Lord.’ Indeed, this blessing of Nityananda ji came to fruition and the Lord showered immense grace upon Sen Mahasaya. The Lord Himself gave hope to Govind to send His desired Mahaprasad for the entire family of Shivanand ji. As a result of such austerity of his, the most talented great poet and devotee like poet Karanpur was born in his place in the form of a son. Such behavior of Nityanand ji seemed very distasteful to Mr. Kant, the sister-in-law of Sivanand ji Sen. He was a young man, new blood of youth was flowing in his body, because of this he considered it a great insult to his maternal uncle and in order to complain about it, he separated from all the devotees and first of all reached near the Lord. Without taking off his clothes, he started saluting the Lord.
On this Govind said – Mr. Kant! Why are you behaving this against etiquette? Taking off the tunic, then prostration is done. First take off your clothes, remove the fatigue of the journey, wash your hands and face, then go to worship the Lord.’ But he did not listen to Govind. The Lord also understood that there is definitely some black in the lentils, so he said to Govind – ‘ What manners and rules for Mr. Kant, what he does is right, don’t stop it. In this condition, let him talk.’ Saying this, the Lord started asking him many things regarding the devotees. After asking about the old devotees, the Lord asked in relation to the new devotees that who all have come from among the child devotees now? All the children who were born after the Lord, were now coming with their mothers out of eagerness to see the Lord. While introducing all the children, Shrikant introduced Shivanand ji’s son Parmanand Das and also praised his intense talent and eagerness to see God. The Lord seemed eager to see that child. In all these things, Shri Kant forgot to complain about Nityanand ji. Just then all the devotees came and appeared. Prabhu welcomed everyone as always and arranged for everyone’s prasad by giving them a suitable place to stay.
