[भज] निताई-गौर राधेश्याम [जप] हरेकृष्ण हरेराम
श्री अद्वैताचार्य जी की पहेली
एतावानेव लोकेऽस्मिन् पुंसां धर्म: पर: स्मृत:।
भक्तियोगो भगवति तन्नामग्रहणादिभि:।।
मातृभक्त श्रीगौरांग उन्मादावस्था में भी अपनी स्नेहमयी जननी को एकदम नहीं भूले थे। जब वे अन्तर्दशा से कभी-कभी बाह्य दशा में आ जाते तो अपने प्रिय भक्तों की और प्रेममयी माता की कुशल-क्षेम पूछते और उनके समाचार जानने के निमित्त जगदानन्द जी को प्रतिवर्ष गौड़ भेजते थे। जगदानन्द जी गौड़ में जाकर सभी भक्तों से मिलते, उनसे प्रभु की सभी बातें कहते, उनकी दशा बताते और सभी का कुशल-क्षेम लेकर लौट आते। शचीमाता के लिये प्रभु प्रतिवर्ष जगन्नाथ जी का प्रसाद भेजते और भाँति-भाँति के आश्वासनों द्वारा माता को प्रेम-सन्देश पठाते। प्रभु के सन्देश को कविराज गोस्वामी के शब्दों में सुनिये–
तोमार सेवा छांड़ि आमि करिनूँ संन्यास।
‘बाउल हय्या आमि कैलूँ धर्म नाश।।
एइ अपराध तुमि ना लइह आमार।
तोमार अधीन आमि-पुत्र से तोमार।।
नीलाचले आछि आमि तोमार आज्ञाते।
यावत् जीव तावत् आमि नारिब छाड़िते।।
अर्थात हे माता ! मैंने तुम्हारी सेवा छोड़कर पागल होकर संन्यास धारण कर लिया है, यह मैंने धर्म के विरुद्ध आचरण किया है, मेरे इस अपराध को तुम चित्त में मत लाना। मैं अब भी तुम्हारे अधीन ही हूँ। निमाई अब भी तुम्हारा पुराना ही पुत्र है। नीलाचल में मैं तुम्हारी ही आज्ञा से रह रहा हूँ और जब तक जीऊँगा तब तक नीलाचल को नहीं छोड़ूँगा। इस प्रकार प्रतिवर्ष प्रेम-सन्देश और प्रसाद भेजते।
एक बार जगदानन्द पण्डित प्रभु की आज्ञा से नवद्वीप गये। वहाँ जाकर उन्होंने शचीमाता को प्रसाद दिया, प्रभु का कुशल-समाचार बताया और उनका प्रेम-सन्देश भी कह सुनाया। निमाई को ही सर्वस्व समझने वाली माँ अपने प्यारे पुत्र की ऐसी दयनीय दशा सुनकर फूट-फूटकर रोने लगी। उसके अतिक्षीण शरीर में अब अधिक दिनों तक जीवित रहने की सामर्थ्य नहीं रही थी। जो कुछ थोड़ी-बहुत सामर्थ्य थी भी सो निमाई की ऐसी भयंकर दशा सुनकर उसके शोक के कारण विलीन हो गयी। माता अब अपने जीवन से निराश हो बैठी, निमाई का चन्द्रवदन अब जीवन में फिर देखने को न मिल सकेगा, इस बात से माता की निराशा और बढ़ गयी। वह अब इस विषमय जीवनभार को बहुत दिनों तक ढोते रहने में असमर्थ-सी हो गयी। माता ने पुत्र को रोते-रोते आशीर्वाद पठाया और जगदानन्द जी को प्रेमपूर्वक विदा किया। जगदानन्द जी वहाँ से अन्यान्य भक्तों के यहाँ होते हेुए श्री अद्वैताचार्यजी के घर गये। आचार्य ने उनका अत्यधिक स्वागत-सत्कार किया और प्रभु के सभी समाचार पूछे। आचार्य का शरीर भी अब बहुत वृद्ध हो गया था। उनकी अवस्था 90 से ऊपर पहुँच गयी थी। खाल लटक गयी थी, अब वे घर से बाहर बहुत ही कम निकलते थे।
जगदानन्द को देखकर मानो फिर उनके शरीर में नवयौवन का संचार हो गया और वे एक-एक करके सभी विरक्त भक्तों का समाचार पूछने लगे। जगदानन्द जी दो-चार दिन आचार्य के यहाँ रहे। जब उन्होंने प्रभु के पास जने के लिये अत्यधिक आग्रह किया तब आचार्य ने उन्हें जाने की आज्ञा दे दी और प्रभु के लिये एक पहेली युक्त पत्र भी लिखकर दिया। जगदानन्दजी उस पत्र को लेकर प्रभु के पास पहुँचे।
महाप्रभु जब बाह्य दशा में आये, तब उन्होंने सभी भक्तों के कुशल-समाचार पूछे। जगदानन्द जी सबका कुशल-क्षेम बताकर अन्त में अद्वैताचार्य की वह पहेलीवाली पत्री दी। प्रभु की आज्ञा से वे सुनाने लगे। प्रभु को कोटि-कोटि प्रणाम कर लेने के अनन्तर उसमें यह पहेली थी–
बाउलके कहिह-लोक हइल बाउल।
बाउलके कहिह-बाटेना बिकाय चाउल।।
बाउलके कहिह-काजे नाहिक आउल।
बाउलके कहिह-इहा कहिया छे बाउल।।[1]
सभी समीप में बैठे हुए भक्त इस विचित्र पहेली को सुनकर हँसने लगे। महाप्रभु मन ही मन इसका मर्म समझकर कुछ मन्द-मन्द मुसकाये और जैसी उनकी आज्ञा, इतना कहकर चुप हो गये। प्रभु के बाहरी प्राण श्रीस्वरूप गोस्वामी को प्रभु की मुसकराहट में कुछ विचित्रता प्रतीत हुई। इसलिये दीनता के साथ पूछने लगे– ‘प्रभो ! मैं इस विचित्र पहेली का अर्थ समझना चाहता हूँ। आचार्य अद्वैत राय ने यह कैसी अनोखी पहेली भेजी है। आप इस प्रकार इसे सुनकर क्यों मुसकराये?’
प्रभु ने धीरे-धीरे गम्भीरता के स्वर में कहा– अद्वैताचार्य कोई साधारण आचार्य तो हैं ही नहीं। वे नाम के ही आचार्य नहीं हैं, किन्तु आचार्यपने के सभी कार्य भली-भाँति जानते हैं। उन्हें शास्त्रीय विधि के अनुसार पूजा-पाठ करने की सभी विधि मालूम है। पूजा में पहले तो बडे सत्कार के साथ देवताओं को बुलाया जाता है, फिर उनकी षोडशोपचार रीति से विधिवत् पूजा की जाती है, यथास्थान पधराया जाता है, तब देवताओं से हाथ जोड़कर कहते है– ‘गच्छ-गच्छ परं स्थानम्’ अर्थात ‘अब अपने परम स्थान को पधारिये।’ सम्भवतया यही उनका अभिप्राय हो, वे ज्ञानी पण्डित हैं, उनके अर्थ को ठीक-ठीक समझ ही कौन सकता है। इस बात को सुनकर स्वरूप गोस्वामी कुछ अन्यमनस्क से हो गये। सभी को पता चल गया कि महाप्रभु अब शीघ्र ही लीला-संवरण करेंगे। इस बात के स्मरण से सभी का हृदय फटने-सा लगा। उसी दिन से प्रभु की उन्मादावस्था और भी अधिक बढ़ गयी।
वे रात-दिन उसी अन्तर्दशा में निमग्न रहने लगे। प्रतिक्षण उनकी दशा लोक-बाह्य-सी बनी रहती थी। कविराज गोस्वामी के शब्दों में सुनिये–
स्तम्भ, कम्प, प्रस्वेद, वैवर्ण अश्रुस्वर-भेद।
देह हैल पुलके व्यापित।।
हासे-कान्दे, नाचे, गाय, उठि इति-उति धाय।
क्षणे, भूमैं पड़िया मूर्च्छिते।।
‘शरीर सन्न पड़ जाता है, कँपकँपी छूटने लगती है। शरीर से पसीना बहने लगता है, मुख म्लान हो जाता है, आँखों से अश्रुधारा बहने लगती है। गला भर आता है, शब्द ठीक-ठीक उच्चारण नहीं होते हैं।
देह रोमांचित हो जाती है। हँसते हैं, जोरों से रुदन करते हैं, नाचते हैं, गाते हैं, उठ-उठकर इधर-उधर भागने लगते हैं, क्षणभर में मूर्च्छित होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ते हैं।’ प्यारे ! पगले दयालु चैतन्य ! क्या इस पागलपन में हमारा कुछ भी साझा नहीं है? हे दीनवत्सल ! इस पागलपन में से यत्किंचित भी हमें मिल जाय तो यह सार-हीन जीवन सार्थक बन जाय। मेरे गौर ! उस मादक मदिरा का एक प्याला मुझको भी क्यों नहीं पिला देता? हे मेरे पागलशिरोमणि ! तेरे चरणों में मैं कोटि-कोटि नमस्कार करता हूँ।

That is the supreme duty of men in this world Yoga of devotion to the Lord by chanting that name and so on.
Mother devotee Shri Gaurang did not completely forget his loving mother even in his frenzy. When he sometimes used to come out from inner state, he used to inquire about the well-being of his dear devotees and loving mother and used to send Jagadanand ji to Gaur every year to know about their news. Jagadanand ji would go to Gaur and meet all the devotees, tell them everything about the Lord, tell about their condition and return with everyone’s well-being. Lord Jagannath ji’s Prasad was sent every year for Sachi Mata and he used to send love-messages to the mother through various assurances. Listen to the message of the Lord in the words of Kaviraj Goswami-
Tomar Seva Chhandi Aami Karinun Sannyas. ‘Baul Hayya Aami Kailu Dharma Naash. Ae crime tumhi na lihi amar. Tomar from Ami-putra under Tomar. Nilachale Aachi Aami Tomar Aayate. Yavat jeev tavat aami narib chadite.
That means O mother! I have left your service and adopted sannyas out of madness, I have acted against religion, don’t bring this crime of mine to your mind. I am still under you. Nimai is still your old son. I am living in Nilachal by your order and I will not leave Nilachal till I live. In this way, every year he used to send love-messages and offerings. Once Jagadananda Pandit went to Navadweep by the order of the Lord. After going there, he gave prasad to Sachimata, told the good news of the Lord and also told her love message. The mother, who considered Nimai as everything, started crying bitterly after hearing such a pitiable condition of her beloved son. His emaciated body no longer had the capacity to survive. Whatever little strength she had, hearing of such a terrible condition of Nimai, got dissolved due to her grief. Mother is now disappointed with her life, she will not be able to see Nimai’s moon day again in her life, because of this the mother’s despair increased further. Now she has become unable to carry this toxic life load for many days. The mother sent blessings to the son while crying and bid farewell to Jagadanand ji with love. From there Jagadanand ji went to Shri Advaitacharyaji’s house while being with other devotees. Acharya welcomed him very much and asked all the news of the Lord. Acharya’s body had also become very old now. His condition had reached above 90. The skin was hanging, now they used to come out of the house very rarely.
On seeing Jagadananda, as if his body was once again rejuvenated and he started inquiring about the news of all the disinterested devotees one by one. Jagadanand ji stayed at Acharya’s place for two-four days. When he strongly urged to go to the Lord, the Acharya allowed him to go and also wrote a letter containing a riddle for the Lord. Jagdanandji reached to the Lord with that letter.
When Mahaprabhu came in external condition, he inquired about the well-being of all the devotees. Jagadanand ji gave that riddle letter of Advaitacharya in the end after telling everyone’s well-being. By the order of the Lord, they started narrating. After doing many obeisances to the Lord, there was this puzzle in him-
Baulke Kahih-Lok Hail Baul. Bowlke Kahih-Batena Bikai Chawl. Baulke kahih-kaje nahik aul. Baulke kahih-iha kahiya chhe baul.[1]
All the devotees sitting nearby started laughing after hearing this strange riddle. Mahaprabhu smiled a little slowly understanding its meaning in his mind and kept silent after saying as much as he ordered. Sri Swaroop Goswami, the external soul of the Lord, found something strange in the smile of the Lord. That’s why started asking with humility – ‘ Lord! I want to understand the meaning of this strange riddle. What a unique puzzle Acharya Advait Rai has sent. Why did you smile after hearing it like this?’
Prabhu slowly said in a serious tone – Advaitacharya is not an ordinary Acharya at all. He is not an Acharya in name only, but he knows very well all the tasks of being an Acharya. He knows all the methods of worshiping according to the classical method. In worship, first the deities are called with great hospitality, then they are duly worshiped in Shodashopachar rituals, they are brought to the place, then they say with folded hands to the deities- ‘Gachch-gachch param sthanam’ which means ‘now go to your supreme abode’. Come to the place.’ Perhaps this is what he meant, he is a learned scholar, who can understand his meaning exactly. Swaroop Goswami became somewhat distracted after hearing this. Everyone came to know that Mahaprabhu will soon do Leela-Savaran. Everyone’s heart felt like bursting at the recollection of this. From that day onwards the frenzy of the Lord increased even more.
Day and night, he remained engrossed in the same inner state. Every moment his condition remained like an outsider. Listen in the words of Kaviraj Goswami-
Collapse, trembling, sweating, discolored tears. The body is covered with bridges. Laugh and cry, dance, sing, get up and run. In a moment, he fell to the ground unconscious.
The body becomes numb, shivering starts leaving. Sweat starts flowing from the body, the face becomes pale, tears start flowing from the eyes. Throat gets full, words are not pronounced properly.
The body becomes thrilled. They laugh, cry loudly, dance, sing, get up and run hither and thither, faint in a moment and fall on the ground.’ Dear! Crazy kind Chaitanya! Have we nothing to share in this madness? Hey Deenvatsal! If we get even a little bit of this madness, then this essenceless life will become meaningful. my attention! Why doesn’t he give me a cup of that intoxicating liquor? O my crazy head! I offer my obeisances at your feet.
