सबसे पहले कहां और क्यों शुरु हुई जन्माष्टमी मनाने की परम्परा ? जन्माष्टमी व्रत का क्या पुण्य-फल है ?
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण का जन्म ‘अजन्मा का जन्म’ है । वह अजन्मा होकर पृथ्वी पर जन्म लेते हैं, सर्वशक्तिमान होने पर भी कंस के कारागार में जन्म लेते हैं । भगवान गर्भ में नहीं आये, वसुदेव और देवकी के मन में आये और अपने दिव्य रूप में प्रकट होकर इन्होंने अपने माता-पिता को भी आश्चर्यचकित कर दिया । माता पिता हैं देवकी और वसुदेव; किन्तु नन्दबाबा और यशोदा द्वारा पालन किए जाते हैं । भगवान के जन्म और कर्म सभी दिव्य हैं ।
गीता (४।९) में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा है—‘मेरा जन्म और कर्म दिव्य है—इस तत्त्व को जो जानता है, वह शरीर का त्याग करके पुनर्जन्म को प्राप्त नहीं होता है, मुझे प्राप्त होता है ।’
श्रीकृष्ण जन्माष्टमी मनाने की परम्परा कब शुरु हुई ?
एक बार धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से पूछा—‘हे अच्युत ! आप कृपा करके यह बतायें कि जन्माष्टमी (आपका जन्मदिन) महोत्सव मनाने की परम्परा कब शुरु हुई और इसका पुण्य क्या है ?’
तब देवकीनन्दन श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा—
मथुरा में रंगभूमि में मल्लयुद्ध द्वारा जब हमने (श्रीकृष्ण और बलदेवजी ने) दुष्ट कंस को उसके अनुयायियों सहित मार गिराया तब माता देवकी मुझे अपनी गोद में लेकर रोने लगीं । उस समय रंगमंच में विशाल जनसमूह उपस्थित था । मधु, वृष्णि, अन्धकादि वंश के स्त्री-पुरुषों से माता देवकीजी घिरी हुई थीं । पिता वसुदेवजी भी मुझे और बलदेवजी को आलिंगन करके रोने लगे और हृदय से लगा कर बार-बार हे पुत्र ! हे पुत्र ! कहने लगे । वे गद्गद् वाणी में अत्यन्त दु:खी होकर कहने लगे—‘आज मेरा जन्म सफल हुआ, मेरा जीवित रहना सार्थक हुआ जो मैं अपने दोनों पुत्रों को सकुशल देख रहा हूँ । सौभाग्य से आज हम सभी मिल रहे हैं ।’
वसुदेव और देवकीजी को अत्यन्त हर्षित देखकर यदुवंश के सभी महानुभाव श्रीकृष्ण से कहने लगे—‘भगवन् ! आपने बहुत बड़ा काम किया जो मल्लयुद्ध द्वारा इस दुष्ट कंस को यमलोक पहुंचा दिया । मधुपुरी (मथुरा) में ही क्या ! समस्त लोकों में आज महान उत्सव हो रहा है । आप कृपा करके यह बतलाएं कि किस तिथि, दिन, घड़ी, मुहुर्त में माता देवकी ने आपको जन्म दिया, उसमें हम सब आपका जन्मोत्सव मनाना चाहते हैं ।’
समस्त जनसमुदाय की बात सुनकर वसुदेवजी के आनन्द की सीमा न रही । तब उन्होंने श्रीकृष्ण से कहा – ‘पुत्र ! सभी मथुरानिवासियों की प्रार्थना का मान रखते हुए उनको अपना जन्मदिन बताओ ।’ तब श्रीकृष्ण ने मथुरानिवासी लोगों से कहा—
भादौ की थी असित अष्टमी, निशा अंधेरी ।
रस की बूंदें बरस रहीं फिर घटा घनेरी ।।
मधु निद्रा में मत्त प्रचुर प्रहरी थे सोये ।
दो बंदी थे जगे हुए चिन्ता में खोये ।।
सहसा चन्द्रोदय हुआ ध्वंस हेतु तम वंश के ।
प्राची के नभ में तथा कारागृह में कंस के ।।
प्रसव हुआ, पर नहीं पेट से बालक निकला ।
व्यक्त व्योम में विमल विश्व का पालक निकला ।।
चार भुजाओं में गदा, शंख, चक्र थे, पद्म था ।
मन्दिर की ले मान्यता वन्दित बंदी सद्य था ।।
पिता हुए आश्चर्यचकित, थी विस्मित माता ।
अद्भुत शिशु वह मन्द-मन्द हंसता, मुसकाता ।। (भाई हनुमानप्रसादजी पोद्दार)
‘आप मेरे जन्मदिन को जन्माष्टमी नाम से जानें । जिस समय सिंह राशि पर सूर्य और वृषराशि पर चन्द्रमा था, उस भाद्रपद मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि को अर्धरात्रि में रोहिणी नक्षत्र में मेरा जन्म हुआ ।
वसुदेवजी के द्वारा माता देवकी के गर्भ से मैंने जन्म लिया । वह दिन संसार में जन्माष्टमी के नाम से विख्यात होगा ।’
सिंहराशिगते सूर्ये गगने जलदाकुले ।
मासि भाद्रपदेऽष्टम्यां कृष्णपक्षेऽर्धरात्रके ।
वृषराशिस्थिते चन्द्रे नक्षत्रे रोहिणीयुते ।। (उत्तरपर्व ५५।१४)
सबसे पहले यह व्रत मथुरा में प्रसिद्ध हुआ फिर बाद में सभी लोकों में इसकी प्रसिद्धि होगी । प्रत्येक धार्मिक व्यक्ति को जन्माष्टमी का व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए ।’
युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा—‘भगवन् ! इस व्रत का पुण्य क्या है ?’ तब देवकीनन्दन श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा—
▪️इस व्रत के करने से संसार में शान्ति होगी, सुख प्राप्त होगा तथा मनुष्य निरोगी रहेगा ।
▪️जिस देश में यह व्रत-उत्सव किया जाता है वहां मेघ समय पर वर्षा करते हैं । अतिवृष्टि और अनावृष्टि का भय नहीं रहता है ।
▪️जिस घर में जन्माष्टमी के दिन सूतिकागृह बनाकर देवकी-व्रत पूजन किया जाता है, वहां अकालमृत्यु, गर्भपात, वैधव्य, दुर्भाग्य और कलह नहीं होता है ।
▪️जो मनुष्य मेरे जन्माष्टमी महोत्सव को प्रतिवर्ष करता है, वह पुत्र, संतान, आरोग्य, दीर्य आयु, धन-धान्य, सुन्दर घर व सभी मनोरथों को प्राप्त करता है ।
▪️जन्माष्टमी-व्रत व पूजन के पुण्य से मनुष्य संसार में समस्त सुख भोगकर जन्म-मरण के चक्र से मुक्त हो जाता है और विष्णुलोक में निवास करता है ।
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के मुख से जन्माष्टमी व्रत की परम्परा व महत्व सुनकर धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने हस्तिनापुर में प्रतिवर्ष इस महोत्सव को कराया ।
Where and why did the tradition of celebrating Janmashtami first start? What is the merit of Janmashtami fast?
The birth of Lord Krishna is the birth of the unborn. Being unborn, he is born on earth, even though he is omnipotent, he takes birth in the prison of Kansa. The Lord did not come in the womb, came to the mind of Vasudeva and Devaki and surprised even his parents by appearing in his divine form. The parents are Devaki and Vasudeva; But Nanda Baba and Yashoda are followed. The birth and deeds of the Lord are all divine.
Lord Krishna has said in Gita (4.9) – ‘My birth and action are divine – one who knows this principle, does not renounce the body and attains rebirth, he attains it.’
When did the tradition of celebrating Shri Krishna Janmashtami start?
Once Dharmaraja Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna – ‘O Achyuta! Please tell me when the tradition of celebrating Janmashtami (your birthday) festival started and what is its merit?
Then Devkinandan Shri Krishna said-
When we (Shri Krishna and Baldevji) killed the evil Kansa along with his followers in the amphitheater in Mathura, Mother Devaki took me in her lap and started crying. At that time a huge crowd was present in the theatre. Mother Devaki was surrounded by men and women of Madhu, Vrishni and Andhakadi clans. Father Vasudevji also embraced me and Baldevji and started crying and again and again with his heart, O son! O son! Started saying He started saying very sadly in the gadgad speech – ‘Today my birth has been successful, my survival is meaningful, which I am seeing my two sons safe. Luckily we are all meeting today.
Seeing Vasudeva and Devaki ji very happy, all the nobles of Yaduvansh started saying to Shri Krishna – ‘Lord! You did a great job which brought this evil Kansa to Yamaloka through wrestling. What is in Madhupuri (Mathura) only! A great festival is taking place in all the worlds today. Please tell me on which date, day, clock, muhurta Mother Devaki gave birth to you, in that we all want to celebrate your birth anniversary.
There was no limit to the joy of Vasudevji after listening to the whole community. Then he said to Shri Krishna – ‘Son! Keeping the prayer of all the residents of Mathura, tell them your birthday.’ Then Shri Krishna said to the people of Mathura-
Bhadau’s was Asit Ashtami, Nisha Andheri. The drops of juice kept raining and then it became dense. Matters were abundant watchdogs in their sleep. Two prisoners were awake and lost in worry. Suddenly moonrise happened for the destruction of Tama dynasty. In the eyes of Prachi and in the prison of Kansa. Delivery took place, but not the child came out of the stomach. Vimal turns out to be the guardian of the world in the expressed Vyom. The four arms had a mace, a conch, a chakra, and Padma was there. The recognition of the temple was a venerable prisoner. You know my birthday as Janmashtami. I was born in Rohini Nakshatra at midnight on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month, when the Sun was on Leo and the Moon was on Taurus.
I was born from the womb of Mother Devaki through Vasudevji. That day will be known in the world as Janmashtami.
The sun is in Leo and the sky is cloudy. On the eighth day of the month of Bhadrapada, in the dark fortnight, at midnight, Moon in Taurus conjunct Rohini (Uttaraparva 55.14)
First this fast became famous in Mathura, then later it will be famous in all the worlds. Every religious person must observe Janmashtami fast.
Yudhisthira asked—‘Lord! What is the merit of this fast?” Then Devakinanda Sri Krishna said—
By observing this fast, there will be peace in the world, happiness will be achieved and a person will remain healthy.
In the country where this fast-festival is celebrated, clouds rain on time. There is no fear of heavy rain and rain.
In the house where Devaki-Vrat is worshiped by making Sutika Griha on the day of Janmashtami, there is no premature death, abortion, widowhood, misfortune and discord.
The person who performs my Janmashtami festival every year, gets sons, children, health, long life, wealth, food, beautiful home and all desires.
Janmashtami – By the virtue of fasting and worshiping, a person enjoys all the happiness in the world and becomes free from the cycle of birth and death and resides in Vishnuloka.
Hearing the tradition and importance of Janmashtami fasting from the mouth of Lord Krishna, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira got this festival done every year in Hastinapur.
