देवी शैल पुत्री का वर्णन हमें ब्रह्म पुराण में मिलता है। पुराण के अनुसार चैत्र प्रतिपदा के प्रथम सूर्योदय पर ब्रह्मा ने संसार की रचना की थी। माना जाता है कि इसी दिन श्रीराम का राज्याभिषेक हुआ था।
नवरात्र की प्रथम देवी शैलपुत्री मानव मन पर अपनी सत्ता रखती हैं। उनका चन्द्रमा पर भी आधिपत्य माना जाता है। शैलपुत्री पार्वती का ही रूप हैं। पर्वतराज हिमालय के घर में जन्म लेने के कारण इन्हें शैलपुत्री कहा जाता है। चरण
कथा है कि देवी पार्वती शिव से विवाह के पश्चात हर साल नौ दिन अपने मायके यानी पृथ्वी पर आती थीं। नवरात्र के पहले दिन पर्वतराज अपनी पुत्री का स्वागत करके उनकी पूजा करते थे, इसलिए नवरात्र के पहले दिन माँ के शैलपुत्री रूप की पूजा की जाती है।
श्वेतवर्ण शैलपुत्री के सिर पर सोने के मुकुट में त्रिशूल सुशोभित है। इनके दाएँ हाथ में त्रिशूल, बाएँ हाथ में कमल सुशोभित है।
मान्यता है कि शैलपुत्री की पूजा से व्यक्ति को सुख, सुविधा, माता, घर, सम्पत्ति, में लाभ मिलता है। मनोविकार दूर होते हैं। इन्हें सफेद फूल चढ़ाएँ, गाय के घी का दीपक जलाएँ। दूध-शहद और खोये की मिठाई का भोग लगाएँ। ॐ श्रीदुर्गायै नमः

The white-complexioned Shailputri has a trident adorned in a gold crown. He has a trident in his right hand and a lotus in his left hand.
