कार्तिक माह माहात्म्य – नवाँ अध्याय

जो पढ़े सुनेगा इसे, वह होगा भव से पार।

श्री हरि कृपा से लिख रहा, नवम अध्याय का सार।।

राजा पृथु ने कहा – हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ नारद जी! आपने कार्तिक माह के व्रत में जो तुलसी की जड़ में भगवान विष्णु का निवास बताकर उस स्थान की मिट्टी की पूजा करना बतलाया है, अत: मैं श्री तुलसी जी के माहात्म्य को सुनना चाहता हूँ. तुलसी जी कहां और किस प्रकार उत्पन्न हुई, यह बताने की कृपा करें.

नारद जी बोले – राजन! अब आप तुलसी जी की महत्ता तथा उनके जन्म का प्राचीन इतिहास ध्यानपूर्वक सुनिए –

एक बार देवगुरु बृहस्पति और देवराज इन्द्र भगवान शंकर का दर्शन करने कैलाश पर्वत की ओर चले तब भगवान शंकर ने अपने भक्तों की परीक्षा लेने के लिए जटाधारी दिगम्बर का रुप धारण कर उन दोनों के मार्ग में अवरोध उत्पन्न किया यद्यपि वह तेजस्वी, शान्त, लम्बी भुजा और चौड़ी छाती वाले, गौर वर्ण, अपने विशाल नेत्रों से युक्त तथा सिर पर जटा धारण किये वैसे ही बैठे थे तथापि उन भगवान शंकर को न पहचान कर इन्द्र ने उनसे उनका नाम व धाम आदि पूछते हुए कहा कि क्या भगवान शंकर अपने स्थान पर हैं या कहीं गये हुए हैं?

इस पर तपस्वी रूप भगवान शिव कुछ नहीं बोले. इन्द्र को अपने त्रिलोकीनाथ होने का गर्व था, उसी अहंकार के प्रभाव से वह चुप किस प्रकार रह सकता था, उसने क्रोधित होते हुए उस तपस्वी को धुड़ककर कहा – अरे! मैंने तुझसे कुछ पूछा है और तू उसका उत्तर भी नहीं देता, मैं अभी तुझ पर वज्र का प्रहार करता हूँ फिर देखता हूँ कि कौन तुझ दुर्मति की रक्षा करता है. इस प्रकार कहकर जैसे ही इन्द्र ने उस जटाधारी दिगम्बर को मारने के लिए हाथ में वज्र लिया वैसे ही भगवान शिव ने वज्र सहित इन्द्र का हाथ स्तम्भित कर दिया और विकराल नेत्र कर उसे देखा.

उस समय ऎसा प्रतीत हो रहा था कि वह दिगम्बर प्रज्वलित हो उठा है और वह अपने तेज से जला देगा. भुजाएँ स्तम्भित होने के कारण इन्द्र दुखित होने के साथ-साथ अत्यन्त कुपित भी हो गया परन्तु उस जटाधारी दिगम्बर को प्रज्वलित देखकर बृहस्पति जी ने उन्हें भगवान शंकर जानकर प्रणाम किया और दण्डवत होकर उनकी स्तुति करने लगे. बृहस्पति भगवान शंकर से कहने लगे – हे दीनानाथ! हे महादेव! आप अपने क्रोध को शान्त कर लीजिए और इन्द्र के इस अपराध को क्षमा कीजिए.

बृहस्पति के यह वचन सुनकर भगवान शंकर ने गम्भीर वाणी में कहा – मैं अपने नेत्रों से निकाले हुए क्रोध को किस प्रकार रोकूँ?

तब बृहस्पति ने कहा – भगवन्! आप अपना भक्तवत्सल नाम सार्थक करते हुए अपने भक्तों पर दया कीजिए. आप अपने इस तेज को अन्यत्र स्थापित कीजिए और इन्द्र का उद्धार कीजिए.

तब भगवान शंकर गुरु बृहस्पति से बोले – मैं तुम्हारी स्तुति से अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हूँ. तुमने इन्द्र को जीवनदान दिलवाया है. मुझे विश्वास है कि मेरे नेत्रों की अग्नि अब इन्द्र को पीड़ित नहीं करेगी.

बृहस्पति से इस प्रकार कहकर भगवान शिव ने अपने मस्तक से निकाले हुए अग्निमय तेज को अपने हाथों में ले लिया और फिर उसे क्षीर सागर में डाल दिया तत्पश्चात भगवान शंकर अन्तर्ध्यान हो गये. इस प्रकार जिसको जो जानने की कामना थी उसे जानकर इन्द्र तथा बृहस्पति अपने-अपने स्थान को चले गये.

He who reads and hears it, he will be beyond the world.

Shri Hari is writing with grace, the essence of the ninth chapter.

King Prithu said – O sage Narad ji! You have told to worship the soil of that place in the fast of Kartik month, which is the abode of Lord Vishnu in the root of Tulsi, so I want to listen to the greatness of Shri Tulsi ji. Please tell where and how Tulsi ji originated.

Narad said – Rajan! Now listen carefully to the importance of Tulsi ji and the ancient history of his birth.

Once, Devguru Brihaspati and Devraj Indra went towards Mount Kailash to see Lord Shankar, then Lord Shankar took the form of Jatadhari Digambar to test his devotees and created obstacles in the path of both of them, although he was stunning, calm, long arms. And the broad chested, gaur varna, with their huge eyes and wearing a jata on their head, were sitting in the same way, however, not recognizing those Lord Shankar, Indra asked him his name and place etc., asking whether Lord Shankar was in his place. Or have you gone somewhere?

Lord Shiva as an ascetic did not say anything on this. Indra was proud of his being Trilokinath, how could he remain silent under the influence of the same ego, he got angry and said to that ascetic – Oh! I have asked you something and you do not even answer it, I am now attacking you with a thunderbolt and then I will see who protects your wickedness. Saying this, as soon as Indra took a thunderbolt in his hand to kill that jat-dhari Digambar, in the same way, Lord Shiva pillared Indra’s hand with the thunderbolt and looked at him with a fierce eye.

At that time it seemed that the Digambara had ignited and he would burn it with his own brilliance. Due to erect arms, Indra became very angry as well as grieved, but seeing that Jata-dhari Digambara ignited, Brihaspati ji bowed to him as Lord Shankar and worshiped him and started praising him. Brihaspati started saying to Lord Shankar – O Dinanath! O Mahadev! Calm down your anger and forgive this offense of Indra.

Hearing this word of Brihaspati, Lord Shankar said in a solemn voice – How can I stop the anger that is coming out of my eyes?

Then Brihaspati said – Lord! By making your name Bhaktavatsal meaningful, have mercy on your devotees. You establish this effulgence of yours elsewhere and save Indra.

Then Lord Shankar said to Guru Brihaspati – I am very happy with your praise. You have given life to Indra. I am sure that the fire in my eyes will no longer afflict Indra.

After saying this to Brihaspati, Lord Shiva took the fiery effulgence emanating from his head in his hands and then threw it into the Kshir Sagar, after which Lord Shankar disappeared. In this way, knowing what he wanted to know, Indra and Brihaspati went to their respective places.
