कार्तिक माह माहात्म्य – तीसरा अध्याय

श्रीकृष्ण भगवान के चरणों में शीश झुकाओ।श्रद्धा भाव से पूजो हरि, मनवांछित फल पाओ।।

सत्यभामा ने कहा – हे प्रभो! आप तो सभी काल में व्यापक हैं और सभी काल आपके आगे एक समान हैं फिर यह कार्तिक मास ही सभी मासों में श्रेष्ठ क्यों है? आप सब तिथियों में एकादशी और सभी मासों में कार्तिक मास को ही अपना प्रिय क्यों कहते हैं? इसका कारण बताइए.

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा – हे भामिनी! तुमने बहुत अच्छा प्रश्न किया है. मैं तुम्हें इसका उत्तर देता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो.

इसी प्रकार एक बार महाराज बेन के पुत्र राजा पृथु ने प्रश्न के उत्तर में देवर्षि नारद से प्रश्न किया था और जिसका उत्तर देते हुए नारद जी ने उसे कार्तिक मास की महिमा बताते हुए कहा –

हे राजन! एक समय शंख नाम का एक राक्षस बहुत बलवान एवं अत्याचारी हो गया था. उसके अत्याचारों से तीनों लोकों में त्राहि-त्राहि मच गई. उस शंखासुर ने स्वर्ग में निवास करने वाले देवताओं पर विजय प्राप्त कर इन्द्रादि देवताओं एवं लोकपालों के अधिकारों को छीन लिया. उससे भयभीत होकर समस्त देवता अपने परिवार के सदस्यों के साथ सुमेरु पर्वत की गुफाओं में बहुत दिनो तक छिपे रहे. तत्पश्चात वे निश्चिंत होकर सुमेरु पर्वत की गुफाओं में ही रहने लगे.

उधर जब शंखासुर को इस बात का पता चला कि देवता आनन्दपूर्वक सुमेरु पर्वत की गुफाओं में निवास कर रहे हैं तो उसने सोचा कि ऎसी कोई दिव्य शक्ति अवश्य है जिसके प्रभाव से अधिकारहीन यह देवता अभी भी बलवान हैं. सोचते-सोचते वह इस निर्णय पर पहुंचा कि वेदमन्त्रों के बल के कारण ही देवता बलवान हो रहे हैं. यदि इनसे वेद छीन लिये जाएँ तो वे बलहीन हो जाएंगे. ऎसा विचारकर शंखासुर ब्रह्माजी के सत्यलोक से शीघ्र ही वेदों को हर लाया. उसके द्वारा ले जाये जाते हुए भय से उसके चंगुल से निकल भागे और जल में समा गये. शंखासुर ने वेदमंत्रों तथा बीज मंत्रों को ढूंढते हुए सागर में प्रवेश किया परन्तु न तो उसको वेद मंत्र मिले और ना ही बीज मंत्र.

जब शंखासुर सागर से निराश होकर वापिस लौटा तो उस समय ब्रह्माजी पूजा की सामग्री लेकर सभी देवताओं के साथ भगवान विष्णु की शरण में पहुंचे और भगवान को गहरी निद्रा से जगाने के लिए गाने-बजाने लगे और धूप-गन्ध आदि से बारम्बार उनका पूजन करने लगे. धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य आदि अर्पित किये जाने पर भगवान की निद्रा टूटी और वह देवताओं सहित ब्रह्माजी को अपना पूजन करते हुए देखकर बहुत प्रसन्न हुए तथा कहने लगे –

मैं आप लोगों के इस कीर्तन एवं मंगलाचरण से बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ. आप अपना अभीष्ट वरदान मांगिए, मैं अवश्य प्रदान करुंगा. जो मनुष्य आश्विन शुक्ल की एकादशी से देवोत्थान एकादशी तक ब्रह्ममुहूर्त में उठकर मेरी पूजा करेंगे उन्हें तुम्हारी ही भाँति मेरे प्रसन्न होने के कारण सुख की प्राप्ति होगी. आप लोग जो पाद्य, अर्ध्य, आचमन और जल आदि सामग्री मेरे लिए लाए हैं वे अनन्त गुणों वाली होकर आपका कल्याण करेगी. शंखासुर द्वारा हरे गये सम्पूर्ण वेद जल में स्थित हैं. मैं सागर पुत्र शंखासुर का वध कर के उन वेदों को अभी लाए देता हूँ. आज से मंत्र-बीज और वेदों सहित मैं प्रतिवर्ष कार्तिक मास में जल में विश्राम किया करुंगा.

अब मैं मत्स्य का रुप धारण करके जल में जाता हूँ. तुम सब देवता भी मुनीश्वरों सहित मेरे साथ जल में आओ. इस कार्तिक मास में जो श्रेष्ठ मनुष्य प्रात:काल स्नान करते हैं वे सब यज्ञ के अवभृथ-स्नान द्वारा भली-भाँति नहा लेते हैं. हे देवेन्द्र! कार्तिक मास में व्रत करने वालों को सब प्रकार से धन, पुत्र-पुत्री आदि देते रहना और उनकी सभी आपत्तियों से रक्षा करना. हे धनपति कुबेर! मेरी आज्ञा के अनुसार तुम उनके धन-धान्य की वृद्धि करना क्योंकि इस प्रकार का आचरण करने वाला मनुष्य मेरा रूप धारण कर के जीवनमुक्त हो जाता है. जो मनुष्य जन्म से लेकर मृत्युपर्यन्त विधिपूर्वक इस उत्तम व्रत को करता है, वह आप लोगों का भी पूजनीय है.

कार्तिक शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी तिथि को तुम लोगों ने मुझे जगाया है इसलिए यह तिथि मेरे लिए अत्यन्त प्रीतिदायिनी और माननीय है. हे देवताओ! यह दोनों व्रत नियमपूर्वक करने से मनुष्य मेरा सान्निध्य प्राप्त कर लेते हैं. इन व्रतों को करने से जो फल मिलता है वह अन्य किसी व्रत से नहीं मिलता. अत: प्रत्येक मनुष्य को सुखी और निरोग रहने के लिए कार्तिक माहात्म्य और एकादशी की कथा सुनते हुए उपर्युक्त नियमों का पालन करना चाहिए.

Bow down at the feet of Lord Krishna. Worship Hari with reverence, get the desired result.

Satyabhama said – O Lord! You are pervasive in all times and all times are equal in front of you, then why this month of Kartik is the best among all the months? Why do you call Ekadashi on all dates and Kartik month in all months as your favorite? Give reason for this.

Lord Krishna said – O Bhamini! You have asked a very good question. I’ll give you the answer, listen carefully.

Similarly, once King Prithu, son of Maharaj Ben, had asked Devarshi Narad in answer to the question and in answering which Narad ji told him the glory of Kartik month and said –

Hey Rajan! Once upon a time a demon named Shankh had become very strong and tyrannical. His atrocities caused panic in the three worlds. That Shankhasur conquered the gods residing in heaven and snatched the rights of Indradi gods and Lokpals. Frightened by him, all the gods along with their family members hid in the caves of Mount Sumeru for a long time. After that, he became relaxed and started living in the caves of Mount Sumeru.

On the other hand, when Shankhasur came to know that the deities were happily residing in the caves of Mount Sumeru, he thought that there must be some divine power under whose influence this deity is still strong. While thinking, he came to the decision that the deities are becoming strong only due to the power of Veda Mantras. If the Vedas are taken away from them, they will become powerless. Thinking like this, Shankhasur brought the Vedas from the Satyalok of Brahmaji very soon. Being carried by him, he escaped from his clutches in fear and got into the water. Shankhasur entered the ocean searching for Veda mantras and Beej mantras, but neither he got Veda mantras nor Beej mantras.

When Shankhasur returned disappointed from the ocean, at that time Brahmaji along with all the deities took shelter of Lord Vishnu with the material of worship and started playing songs and singing to awaken the Lord from deep sleep and started worshiping him again and again with incense-smell etc. . After offering incense, lamp, naivedya etc., God’s sleep was broken and he was very pleased to see Brahma ji doing his worship along with the gods and started saying –

I am very happy with this Kirtan and invocation of you guys. You ask for your desired boon, I will surely give it. Those who worship me in Brahmamuhurta from Ashwin Shukla Ekadashi to Devotthan Ekadashi, they will get happiness just like you because of my happiness. The material that you people have brought for me like padya, ardhya, achaman and water, they will do your welfare by having infinite qualities. The entire Vedas, which were greened by Shankhasur, are situated in water. After killing Sagar’s son Shankhasur, I bring those Vedas now. From today onwards, I will take rest in water every year in the month of Kartik along with mantra-seeds and Vedas.

Now I take the form of a fish and go into the water. All you gods also come with me in the water along with the sages. In this Kartik month, all the best people who take bath early in the morning, they all take a good bath by taking bath in the yagya. Oh Devendra! Keep giving money, sons and daughters in every way to those who observe fast in the month of Kartik and protect them from all their objections. O rich Kuber! According to my orders, you should increase their wealth and food, because a person who behaves like this becomes free from life by taking the form of me. The person who observes this excellent fast from birth till death, is worshipful of you people too.

You have awakened me on the Ekadashi Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, so this date is very loving and honorable for me. O gods! By observing both these fasts regularly, human beings attain my company. The result obtained by observing these fasts is not obtained from any other fast. Therefore, every human being should follow the above rules while listening to the story of Kartik Mahatmya and Ekadashi to remain happy and healthy.
