वैसे तो पूरे भारतवर्ष को ही तीर्थों का स्थल कहा जाये तो कुछ भी गलत नहीं होगा। चूंकि हिंदू धर्म के मानने वालों की संख्या बहुतायत में है इसलिये हिंदुओं की आस्था के केंद्र भी अधिक मिलते हैं। उत्तर-दक्षिण, पूर्व-पश्चिम चारों दिशाओं में चार धाम हिंदूओं की आस्था के प्रमुख केंद्र हैं। इन्हीं में एक धाम है बद्रीनाथ-
हिमालय में समुद्र तल से लगभग ३०५० मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित बद्रीनाथ का नजारा बहुत मोहक होता है। प्रस्तुत है भगवान विष्णु के इस मंदिर बद्रीनाथ की कहानी-
अलकनंदा नदी के बांई और तट पर नर और नारायण नामक दो पर्वत श्रेणियों के बीच स्थित भगवान विष्णु के इस धाम के आस-पास एक समय में जंगली बेरी बद्री प्रचुर मात्रा में पाई जाती थी। इसी बद्री के नाम पर इस धाम का नाम बद्रीनाथ पड़ा।
वहीं बद्रीनाथ नाम होने के पीछे एक कथा भी प्रचलित है कि भगवान विष्णु तपस्या में लीन थे कि भयंकर हिमपात होने लगा। हिमपात के कारण भगवान विष्णु भी पूरी तरह हिम में डूब चुके थे।
तब माता लक्ष्मी से उनकी यह दशा सहन न हो सकी और उनके समीप ही एक बेरी यानि बदरी के वृक्ष का रुप लेकर उन्हें धूप, वर्षा और हिम से बचाने लगी। कालांतर में जब भगवान विष्णु ने आंखे खोली तो देखा कि मां लक्ष्मी स्वयं हिम से ढकी हुई हैं।
भगवान विष्णु ने माता लक्ष्मी के तप को देखते हुए कहा कि आपने भी मेरे समान ही तप किया है इसलिये इस धाम को मुझे तुम्हारे साथ पूजा जायेगा। साथ ही उन्होंने कहा चूंकि आपने बदरी वृक्ष का रूप धारण कर मेरी रक्षा की है इसलिये मुझे भी बदरी के नाथ यानि बदरीनाथ के नाम से जाना जायेगा।
बद्रीनाथ धाम के कपाट सर्दियों के मौसम में बंद रहते हैं। कहते हैं मंदिर के कपाट बंद होने के बाद फिर छह मास तक देवर्षि नारद भगवान की पूजा करते हैं। कहा जाता है कि मंदिर के कपाट बंद करते समय जो ज्योति जलाई जाति है वह कपाट खुलने के बाद भी जलती हुई ही मिलती है।
कहा जाता है कि बद्रीनाथ धाम पहले भगवान शिव का निवास होता था और वे यहां माता पार्वती के साथ रहा करते थे।
एक बार की बात है कि भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती देखते हैं कि द्वार पर एक बालक बहुत तेज-तेज रो रहा है। माता पार्वती इस दारुण दृश्य को देखकर चुप न रह सकी और बच्चे की तरफ जाने लगी। भगवान शिव ने उन्हें रोकने की कोशिश भी की और समझाया भी कि इस निर्जन इलाके में यह अकेला बच्चा जरुर कुछ गड़बड़ है।
लेकिन बच्चे का रुदन माता पार्वती के हृदय को भेद रहा था वे बच्चे को उठाने लगी कि भगवान भोलेनाथ ने फिर रोका और कहा कि पार्वती बच्चे को मत छुओ। इस पर माता पार्वती बिफर गई और बोली कि आप इतने निर्दयी कैसे हो सकते हैं। लाख समझाने पर भी वे नहीं मानी और बच्चे को अंदर ले गई थोड़ी देर बाद बच्चा चुप हो गया।
माता पार्वती बच्चे को दुध पिलाकर निश्चिंत हुई तो उसे छोड़कर भगवान शिव के साथ नजदीक के गरम पानी के झरने में स्नान करने चली गईं। जब वे वापस लौटे तो देखा कि घर अंदर से बंद है। ऐसे में माता पार्वती आश्चर्यचकित हुई और बोली ऐसा कैसे हुआ? भगवान शिव बोले मैनें पहले ही कहा था बच्चे को मत उठाओ वह कोई साधारण बालक नहीं लेकिन तुम नहीं मानी, अब भुगतो।
माता पार्वती बोली अब हम क्या करेंगें कहां जायेंगें तब भगवान शिव बोले यह तुम्हारा प्रिय बालक है, इसलिये मैं इसे कोई हानि नहीं पंहुचा सकता। अब हमारे पास एक ही विकल्प बचता है कि हम अपने लिये कोई और ठिकाना ढूंढ लें। तब भगवान शिव शंकर ने वहां से कूच कर केदारनाथ में अपना नया ठिकाना बनाया।
आप सोच रहे होंगें की यह बालक कौन थे तो यह थे भगवान विष्णु, जिन्हें अपनी साधना के लिये यह स्थान पसंद आया और बालक बनकर भगवान शिव के घर में अपना डेरा जमाया।
नर और नारायण नाम के जिन दो पर्वतों के बीच बद्रीनाथ धाम स्थित है इनकी भी अपनी कहानी हैं और पौराणिक ग्रंथों में अलग-अलग कहानियों के उल्लेख मिलते हैं। इन्हें साक्षात विष्णु का अवतार माना जाता है जो ब्रह्मा के पुत्र धर्म की पत्नी से पैदा हुए थे।
माना जाता है कि यहां पर इन्होंनें जगत के कल्याण के लिये कठोर तप किया। केदारनाथ में शिवलिंग की स्थापना भी नर और नारायण द्वारा किये जाने की मान्यता है।

The Char Dhams in the four directions North-South, East-West are the main centers of the faith of the Hindus. Badrinath is one of these places.
The view of Badrinath situated at an altitude of about 3050 meters above sea level in the Himalayas is very attractive. Presenting the story of this Badrinath temple of Lord Vishnu-
The wild berry Badri was once found in abundance around this abode of Lord Vishnu situated between two mountain ranges named Nar and Narayan on the left bank of river Alaknanda. This Dham was named Badrinath after the name of this Badri.
At the same time, there is a legend behind the name Badrinath that Lord Vishnu was engrossed in penance that it started snowing heavily. Lord Vishnu was also completely immersed in snow due to snowfall.
Then Mata Lakshmi could not bear this condition of her and took the form of a berry i.e. Badri tree near her and started protecting her from sun, rain and snow. Later, when Lord Vishnu opened his eyes, he saw that Goddess Lakshmi herself was covered with snow.
Lord Vishnu looking at the penance of Mata Lakshmi said that you have also done penance like me, so I will worship this Dham along with you. At the same time, he said that since you have protected me by taking the form of Badri tree, therefore I will also be known as Nath of Badri i.e. Badrinath.
The doors of Badrinath Dham remain closed during the winter season. It is said that after the doors of the temple are closed, Devarshi Narad worships God for six months. It is said that the lamp which is lit while closing the doors of the temple is found burning even after the doors are opened.
It is said that Badrinath Dham was earlier the abode of Lord Shiva and he used to stay here with Mother Parvati.
Once upon a time Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati saw that a child was crying loudly at the door. Mother Parvati could not remain silent after seeing this terrible scene and started going towards the child. Lord Shiva also tried to stop him and explained that there must be something wrong with this lonely child in this deserted area.
But the cry of the child was piercing the heart of Mother Parvati, she started lifting the child that Lord Bholenath again stopped and said that Parvati do not touch the child. Mother Parvati got upset on this and said how can you be so cruel. Even after persuading a million times, she did not agree and took the child inside. After a while, the child became silent.
Mother Parvati became relaxed after feeding the child, leaving him and went to bathe in the nearby hot spring with Lord Shiva. When they returned, they found that the house was locked from inside. In such a situation, Mother Parvati was surprised and said how did this happen? Lord Shiva said, I had already told you not to pick up the child, he is not an ordinary child, but you did not agree, now suffer.
Mother Parvati said, what will we do now, where will we go, then Lord Shiva said, this is your favorite child, so I cannot harm him. Now the only option left with us is to find some other abode for ourselves. Then Lord Shiv Shankar traveled from there and made his new abode in Kedarnath.
You must be thinking that who was this child, then it was Lord Vishnu, who liked this place for his spiritual practice and as a child, set up his abode in the house of Lord Shiva.
The two mountains named Nar and Narayan, between which Badrinath Dham is located, also have their own stories and mentions of different stories are found in mythological texts. He is believed to be an incarnation of Vishnu who was born from the wife of Dharma, the son of Brahma.
It is believed that here he did severe penance for the welfare of the world. The establishment of Shivling in Kedarnath is also believed to be done by Nar and Narayan.
