एक बार की बात है वीणा बजाते हुए नारद मुनि भगवान श्रीराम के द्वार पर पहुँचे। नारायण नारायण !!
नारदजी ने देखा कि द्वार पर हनुमान जी पहरा दे रहे है।
हनुमान जी ने पूछा: नारद मुनि ! कहाँ जा रहे हो?
नारदजी बोले: मैं प्रभु से मिलने आया हूँ। नारदजी ने हनुमानजी से पूछा प्रभु इस समय क्या कर रहे है?
हनुमानजी बोले: पता नहीं पर कुछ बही खाते का काम कर रहे है, प्रभु बही खाते में कुछ लिख रहे है।
नारदजी: अच्छा?? क्या लिखा पढ़ी कर रहे है?
हनुमानजी बोले: मुझे पता नहीं मुनिवर आप खुद ही देख आना।
नारद मुनि गए प्रभु के पास और देखा कि प्रभु कुछ लिख रहे है।
नारद जी बोले: प्रभु आप बही खाते का काम कर रहे है?
ये काम तो किसी मुनीम को दे दीजिए।
प्रभु बोले: नहीं नारद, मेरा काम मुझे ही करना पड़ता है। ये काम मैं किसी और को नही सौंप सकता।
नारद जी: अच्छा प्रभु ऐसा क्या काम है? ऐसा आप इस बही खाते में क्या लिख रहे हो?
प्रभु बोले: तुम क्या करोगे देखकर, जाने दो।
नारद जी बोले: नही प्रभु बताईये ऐसा आप इस बही खाते में क्या लिखते हैं?
प्रभु बोले: नारद इस बही खाते में उन भक्तों के नाम है जो मुझे हर पल भजते हैं। मैं उनकी नित्य हाजिरी लगाता हूँ।
नारद जी: अच्छा प्रभु जरा बताईये तो मेरा नाम कहाँ पर है? नारदमुनि ने बही खाते को खोल कर देखा तो उनका नाम सबसे ऊपर था। नारद जी को गर्व हो गया कि देखो मुझे मेरे प्रभु सबसे ज्यादा भक्त मानते है। पर नारद जी ने देखा कि हनुमान जी का नाम उस बही खाते में कहीं नही है? नारद जी सोचने लगे कि हनुमान जी तो प्रभु श्रीराम जी के खास भक्त है फिर उनका नाम, इस बही खाते में क्यों नही है? क्या प्रभु उनको भूल गए है?
नारद मुनि आये हनुमान जी के पास बोले: हनुमान ! प्रभु के बही खाते में उन सब भक्तों के नाम हैं जो नित्य प्रभु को भजते हैं पर आप का नाम उस में कहीं नहीं है?
हनुमानजी ने कहा कि: मुनिवर,! होगा, आप ने शायद ठीक से नहीं देखा होगा?
नारदजी बोले: नहीं नहीं मैंने ध्यान से देखा पर आप का नाम कहीं नही था।
हनुमानजी ने कहा: अच्छा कोई बात नहीं। शायद प्रभु ने मुझे इस लायक नही समझा होगा जो मेरा नाम उस बही खाते में लिखा जाये। पर नारद जी प्रभु एक अन्य दैनंदिनी भी रखते है उसमें भी वे नित्य कुछ लिखते हैं।
नारदजी बोले:अच्छा?
हनुमानजी ने कहा: हाँ!
नारदमुनि फिर गये प्रभु श्रीराम के पास और बोले प्रभु ! सुना है कि आप अपनी अलग से दैनंदिनी भी रखते है! उसमें आप क्या लिखते हैं?
प्रभु श्रीराम बोले: हाँ! पर वो तुम्हारे काम की नहीं है।
नारदजी: ”प्रभु ! बताईये ना, मैं देखना चाहता हूँ कि आप उसमें क्या लिखते हैं?
प्रभु मुस्कुराये और बोले मुनिवर मैं इनमें उन भक्तों के नाम लिखता हूँ जिन को मैं नित्य भजता हूँ।
नारदजी ने डायरी खोल कर देखा तो उसमें सबसे ऊपर हनुमान जी का नाम था। ये देख कर नारदजी का अभिमान टूट गया।
कहने का तात्पर्य यह है कि जो भगवान को सिर्फ जिह्वा से भजते है उनको प्रभु अपना भक्त मानते हैं और जो हृदय से भजते हैं उन भक्तों के वे स्वयं भक्त हो जाते हैं। ऐसे भक्तों को प्रभु अपनी हृदय रूपी विशेष सूची में रखते हैं..!!

Naradji saw that Hanuman ji was guarding the door.
Hanuman asked: Narada Muni! Where are you going?
Naradji said: I have come to meet the Lord. Naradji asked Hanumanji, what is the Lord doing at this time?
Hanumanji said: I do not know, but some are doing the work of the books of account, the Lord is writing something in the books of accounts.
Naradji: Okay?? What are you reading?
Hanumanji said: I don’t know, Munivar, come to see yourself.
Narad Muni went to the Lord and saw that the Lord was writing something.
Narad ji said: Lord, are you doing the work of bookkeeping? Give this work to an accountant.
Lord said: No Narada, I have to do my work. I cannot entrust this work to anyone else.
Narad ji: Good Lord, what is such a thing? So what are you writing in this ledger?
Lord said: Seeing what you will do, let it go.
Narad ji said: No, tell me Lord, what do you write in this book?
The Lord said: Narada, in this ledger, the names of those devotees who worship me every moment. I attend them regularly.
Narad ji: Good lord, please tell me, where is my name? When Naradamuni opened the ledger, his name was at the top. Narad ji became proud that look, my lord considers me the most devotee. But Narad ji saw that Hanuman ji’s name is not there anywhere in that book. Narad ji started thinking that Hanuman ji is a special devotee of Lord Shri Ram ji, then why is his name not in this book? Has the Lord forgotten them?
Narad Muni came to Hanuman ji and said: Hanuman! There are names of all those devotees in the book of the Lord who regularly worship the Lord, but your name is nowhere in it?
Hanumanji said that: Munivar,! Maybe, you probably didn’t see right?
Naradji said: No, I looked carefully but your name was not there anywhere.
Hanumanji said: It’s okay. Perhaps the Lord would not have considered me worthy to have my name written in that ledger. But Narad ji Prabhu also keeps another daily life, in that too he writes something regularly.
Naradji said: Okay?
Hanumanji said: Yes!
Naradamuni again went to Lord Shri Ram and said, Lord! Heard that you keep your separate daily life too! What do you write in it?
Lord Shri Ram said: Yes! But it’s not of your use.
Naradji: “Lord! Tell me, I want to see what you write in it?
The Lord smiled and said, Munivar, I write the names of those devotees to whom I worship regularly.
When Naradji opened the diary, he saw the name of Hanuman ji at the top. Seeing this, Naradji’s pride broke down.
That is to say, those who worship God only with the tongue, they are considered by the Lord as their devotee and those who worship with the heart, they themselves become devotees of those devotees.
