छठ पूजा की पौराणिक कथा—

पुराणों के अनुसार, छठ पूजा की शुरूआत रामायण काल में हुई थी। रावण का वध कर जब भगवान श्री राम और माता सीता वनवास काटकर अयोध्या लौटे तब उन्होंने इस उपवास का पालन किया था।

एक अन्य कथा महाभारत काल से भी जुड़ी हुई है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि कर्ण सूर्यदेव के पुत्र होने के साथ उनके परम भक्त भी थे और वह पानी में कई घंटों तक खड़े रहकर उनको अर्घ्य देते थे और उनका पूजन करते थे।

पांडवों के अच्छे स्वास्थ्य और दीर्घायु के लिए द्रौपदी भी सूर्यदेव की उपासना किया करती थी। कहते हैं कि उनकी इस श्रद्धा ने पांडवों को उनका राजपाट वापिस दिलाने में मदद की।

एक अन्य पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, राजा प्रियव्रत और रानी मालिनी निःसंतान थे, जिस कारण वह बहुत दुखी रहा करते थे। तब उन्हें महर्षि कश्यप ने पुत्रकामेष्टि यज्ञ करने की सलाह दी थी।

राजा ने महर्षि कश्यप की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए यज्ञ का आयोजन किया था और यज्ञ के पूर्ण होने पर महर्षि कश्यप ने रानी को खीर खाने के लिए दी। रानी ने उस खीर को ग्रहण कर लिया और कुछ समय बाद ही उन्हें पुत्र रत्न की प्राप्ति हुई। लेकिन आप विधि का विधान देखिए, रानी का भाग्य इतना खराब था कि उसकी संतान भी मृत पैदा हुई। राजा जब अपने मृत पुत्र का शव लेकर शमशाम घाट गए तो उन्होंने अपने प्राण त्यागने का भी निश्चय कर लिया। जब वह अपने प्राण त्यागने का प्रयास करने लगे तो उनके समक्ष छठ माता प्रकट हो गईं। उन्होंने राजा को बताया कि कोई सच्चे मन से विधिवत छठ देवी की पूजा करें, तो उस व्यक्ति की मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं।

देवी की बात सुनकर राजा ने छठ मैया की पूजा की और व्रत कर उन्हें प्रसन्न किया। राजा से प्रसन्न होकर देवी ने भी उन्हें पुत्र प्राप्ति का वरदान दिया। कहते हैं कि राजा ने जिस दिन वह पूजा की थी, वह कार्तिक शुक्ल की षष्ठी का दिन था और तभी से आज तक इस पूजा की प्रथा चलती आ रही है।

आज भी लोग इस व्रत को संतान प्राप्ति, अपने परिवार की सुख-शांति और दीर्घायु के लिए करते हैं।

According to the Puranas, Chhath Puja started in the Ramayana period. When Lord Rama and Mother Sita returned to Ayodhya after killing Ravana, they followed this fast.

Another story is also related to the Mahabharata period. It is believed that apart from being the son of Sun God, Karna was also his supreme devotee and he used to stand in water for many hours and offer him Arghya and worship him.

For the good health and longevity of the Pandavas, Draupadi also used to worship the Sun God. It is said that this devotion of his helped the Pandavas to get their royal palace back.

According to another legend, King Priyavrata and Queen Malini were childless, due to which he used to be very sad. Then he was advised by Maharishi Kashyap to perform Putrakameshti Yagya.

The king had organized the yajna following the orders of Maharishi Kashyap and after the completion of the yagya, Maharishi Kashyap gave Kheer to the queen to eat. The queen accepted that kheer and after some time she got the son Ratna. But you see the law of the law, the fate of the queen was so bad that even her child was born dead. When the king went to Shamsham Ghat with the body of his dead son, he also decided to give up his life. When he started trying to give up his life, Chhath Mata appeared before him. He told the king that if someone worships Chhath Devi duly with a sincere heart, then that person’s wishes are fulfilled.

After listening to the goddess, the king worshiped Chhath Maiya and pleased her by fasting. Pleased with the king, the goddess also granted him the boon of having a son. It is said that the day when the king did her worship, it was the day of Kartik Shukla’s Shashti and since then the practice of this worship has been going on till date.

Even today people observe this fast for getting children, happiness and peace of their family and longevity.
