भगवान वेदव्यासजी द्वारा रचित अठारह पुराणों में से एक ‘अग्नि पुराण’ में अग्निदेव द्वारा महर्षि वशिष्ठ को दिये गये विभिन्न उपदेश हैं। इसी के अंतर्गत इस पापनाशक स्तोत्र के बारे में महात्मा पुष्कर कहते हैं कि मनुष्य चित्त की मलिनता चोरी, हत्या, परस्त्रीगमन आदि विभिन्न पाप करता है, पर जब चित्त कुछ शुद्ध होता है तब उसे इन पापों से मुक्ति की इच्छा होती है। उस समय भगवान नारायण की दिव्य स्तुति करने से समस्त पापों का प्रायश्चित पूर्ण होता है। इसीलिए इस दिव्य स्तोत्र का नाम ‘समस्त पापनाशक स्तोत्र’ है।
निम्न प्रकार से भगवान नारायण की स्तुति करें-
पुष्करोवाच
विष्णवे विष्णवे नित्यं विष्णवे विष्णवे नमः।
नमामि विष्णुं चित स्थमहंकारगतिं हरिम्।।
चित्तस्थमीशमव्यक्तमनन्तमपराजितम्।
विष्णुमीडयमशेषेण अनादिनिधनं विभुम्।।
विष्णुश्चित्तगतो यन्मे विष्णुर्बुद्धिगतश्च यत्।
यच्चाहंकारगो विष्णुर्यव्दिष्णुमॅयि संस्थितः।।
करोति कर्मभूतोऽसौ स्थावरस्य चरस्य च।
तत् पापं नाशमायातु तस्मिन्नेव हि चिन्तिते।।
ध्यातो हरति यत् पापं स्वप्ने दृष्टस्तु भावनात्।
तमुपेन्द्रमहं विष्णुं प्राणतातिॅहरं हरिम्।।
जगत्यस्मिन्निराधारे मज्जमाने तमस्यधः।
हस्तावलम्बनं विष्णुं प्रणमामि परात्परम्।।
सर्वेश्वरेश्वर विभो परमात्मन्नधोक्षज।
हृषीकेश हृषीकेश हृषीकेश नमोऽस्तु ते।।
नृसिंहानन्त गोविंद भूतभावन केशव।
दुरुक्तं दुष्कृतं ध्यातं शमयाधं नमोऽस्तु ते।।
यन्मया चिन्तितं दुष्टं स्वचित्तवशवर्तिना।
अकार्यँ महदत्युग्रं तच्छ्मं नय केशव।।
ब्रह्मण्यदेव गोविंद परमार्थपरायण।
जगन्नाथ जगध्दतः पापं प्रश्मयाच्युत।।
यथापरह्मे सायाह्मे मध्याह्मे च तथा निशि।
कायेन मनसा वाचा कृतं पापमजानता।।
जानता च हृषीकेश पुण्डरीकाक्ष माधव।
नामत्रयोच्चारणतः पापं यातु मम क्षयम्।।
शरीरं में हृषीकेश पुण्डरीकाक्ष माधव।
पापं प्रशमयाध त्वं वाक्कृतं मम माधव।।
यद् भुंजन यत् स्वपंस्तिष्ठन् गच्छन् जाग्रद यदास्थितः।
कृतवान् पापमधाहं कायेन मनसा गिरा।।
यत् स्वल्पमपि यत् स्थूलं कुयोनिनरकावहम्।
तद् यातु प्रशमं सर्वं वासुदेवानुकीर्तनात्।।
परं ब्रहम परं धाम पवित्रं परमं च यत्।
तस्मिन् प्रकीर्तिते विष्णौ यत् पापं तत् प्रणश्यतु।।
यत् प्राप्य न निवतॅन्ते गन्धस्पशाॅदिवजिॅतम्।
सूरयस्तत् पदं विष्णोस्तत् सर्वं शमयत्वधम्।।

माहात्म्यं-
पापप्रणाशनं स्त्रोत्रं यः पठेच्छृणुयादपि।
शारीरैमॉनसैवॉग्जैः कृतैः पापैः प्रमुच्यते।।
सर्वपापग्रहादिभ्यो याति विष्णोः परं पदम्।
तस्मात् पापे कृते जप्यं स्त्रोत्रं सवॉधमदॅनम्।।
प्रायश्चित्तमधौधानां स्त्रोत्रं व्रतकृते वरम्।
प्रायश्चित्तैः स्त्रोत्रजपैर्व्रतैनॅश्यति पातकम्।।
(अग्नि पुराण- १७२ / १९ – २१)
अर्थ-
पुष्कर बोले- सर्वव्यापी विष्णु को सदा नमस्कार है। श्रीहरी विष्णु को नमस्कार है। मैं अपने चित्त में स्थित सर्वव्यापी, अहंकारशून्य श्रीहरी को नमस्कार करता हूँ। मैं अपने मानस में विराजमान अव्यक्त, अनंत और अपराजित परमेश्वर को नमस्कार करता हूँ।
सबके पूजनीय, जन्म और मरण से रहित, प्रभावशाली श्रीविष्णु को नमस्कार है। विष्णु मेरे चित्त में निवास करते हैं, विष्णु मेरी बुद्धि में विराजमान हैं, विष्णु मुझमें भी स्थित हैं।
वे श्रीविष्णु ही चराचर प्राणियों के कर्मों के रूप में स्थित हैं, उनके चिंतन से मेरे पाप का विनाश हो। जो ध्यान करने पर पापों का हरण करते हैं और भावना करने से स्वप्न में दर्शन देते हैं, इन्द्र के अनुज, शरणागतजनों का दुःख दूर करनेवाले उन पापहारी श्रीविष्णु को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ।
मैं इस निराधार जगत में अज्ञानान्धकार में डूबते हुए को हाथ का सहारा देनेवाले परात्परस्वरुप श्रीविष्णु के सम्मुख नतमस्तक होता हूँ।
सर्वेश्वर प्रभो! कमलनयन परमात्मन्! हृषिकेश! आपको नमस्कार है। इन्द्रियों के स्वामी श्रीविष्णो! आपको नमस्कार है। नृसिंह! अनंतस्वरुप गोविन्द! समस्त भूतप्राणियों की सृष्टि करनेवाले केशव! मेरे द्वारा जो दुर्वचन कहा गया हो अथवा पापपूर्ण चिंतन किया गया हो, मेरे उस पाप का प्रशमन कीजिये, आपको नमस्कार है।
केशव! अपने मन के वश में होकर मैंने जो न करने योग्य अत्यंत उग्र पापपूर्ण चिंतन किया है, उसे शांत कीजिये। परमार्थपरायण, ब्राह्मणप्रिय गोविन्द! अपनी मर्यादा से कभी च्युत न होनेवाले जगन्नाथ! जगत का भरण-पोषण करनेवाले देवेश्वर! मेरे पाप का विनाश कीजिये।
मैंने मध्यान्ह, अपरान्ह, सायंकल एवं रात्रि के समय जानते हुए अथवा अनजाने, शरीर, मन एवं वाणी के द्वारा जो पाप किया हो, ‘पुण्डरीकाक्ष’, ‘हृषिकेश’, ‘माधव’- आपके इन तीन नामों के उच्चारण से मेरे वे सब पाप क्षीण हो जायें।
कमलनयन! लक्ष्मीपते! इन्द्रियों के स्वामी माधव! आज आप मेरे शरीर एवं वाणी द्वारा किये हुए पापों का हनन कीजिये। आज मैंने खाते, सोते, खड़े, चलते अथवा जागते हुए मन, वाणी और शरीर से जो भी नीच योनि एवं नरक की प्राप्ति करनेवाले सूक्ष्म अथवा स्थूल पाप किये हों, भगवान वासुदेव के नामोच्चारण से वे सब विनष्ट हों जायें।
जो परब्रह्म, परम धाम और परम पवित्र हैं, उन श्रीविष्णु के संकीर्तन से मेरे पाप लुप्त हो जायें। जिसको प्राप्त होकर ज्ञानीजन पुन: लौटकर नहीं आते, जो गंध, स्पर्श आदि तन्मात्राओं से रहित है, श्रीविष्णु का वह परम पद मेरे संपूर्ण पापों का शमन करे।
महात्म्य-
जो मनुष्य पापों का विनाश करनेवाले इस स्तोत्र का पठन अथवा श्रवण करता है, वह शरीर, मन और वाणीजनित समस्त पापों से छूट जाता है एवं समस्त पापग्रहों से मुक्त होकर श्रीविष्णु के परम पद को प्राप्त होता है।
इसलिए किसी भी पाप के हो जाने पर इस स्तोत्र का जप करें। यह स्तोत्र पापसमुहों के प्रायश्चित के समान है। कृच्छर् आदि व्रत करनेवाले के लिए भी यह श्रेष्ठ है। स्तोत्र-जप और व्रत्रूप प्रायश्चित से संपूर्ण पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इसलिए भोग और मोक्ष की सिद्धि के लिए इनका अनुष्ठान करना चाहिए।

‘Agni Purana’, one of the eighteen Puranas composed by Lord Ved Vyasji, contains various teachings given by Agnidev to Maharishi Vashishtha. Under this, Mahatma Pushkar says about this sin-killing hymn that man commits various sins like theft, murder, adultery etc. due to filthiness of the mind, but when the mind is somewhat pure, then he has the desire to get rid of these sins. At that time, the atonement of all sins is completed by praising Lord Narayan. That’s why the name of this divine hymn is ‘Samasta Papanashak Stotra’.
Praise Lord Narayan in the following way-
Pushkaro said
O Vishnu, Vishnu, always Vishnu, Vishnu, I offer my obeisances.
I bow to Vishnu, the mind-dwelling Hari, the movement of egoism.
The Lord in the mind, unmanifest, infinite and invincible.
I worship Vishnu, the eternally immortal almighty, with all my heart.
That which is in my mind is Vishnu and that which is in my intellect is Vishnu.
That which is Vishnu, the cow of egoism, and that which is situated in Me, Vishnu.
He acts as the action of the immovable and the movable.
May that sin be destroyed in that very thought.
The sin which is meditated upon takes away, but seen in a dream by feeling.
I worship that Upendra Vishnu Hari who takes away life.
Under the darkness of this world sinking into the baselessness.
I bow to Vishnu, the Supreme Being, who rests on His hands.
O Lord of all lords, O Lord, O Supreme Soul, O Adhokshaja.
O Hrishikesha, O Hrishikesha, O Hrishikesha, I offer my obeisances unto Thee.
Nrishimha, infinite, Govinda, creator of beings, Keshava.
I offer my obeisances unto Thee, who calm the evil spoken, the evil done, the meditated, and the lowly.
That which I thought was evil under the control of my own mind.
O Kesava take away that great and terrible iniquity.
Brahmanyadeva Govinda Paramarthaparayana.
O Lord of the universe, O infallible one, ask me the sin of the world.
As in the afternoon, in the evening, at noon, and at night.
Sin committed by body, mind and speech without knowing it.
And knowing, O Hrishikesha, O lotus-eyed Madhava.
May my sin be destroyed by chanting the three names.
My body is Hrishikesh, Pundarika-aksha, Madhava.
O Madhava forgive the sin I have committed in my words.
Whatever you eat, whatever you sleep, whatever you stand, whatever you go, whatever you wake up, whatever you stand.
I have committed sin with my body mind and words
Whatever is small or whatever is gross carries the hell of the evil womb.
May all that be relieved by chanting the name of Vasudeva.
That which is the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Abode, the Holy and the Supreme.
May that sin which is mentioned in that Vishnu be destroyed.
That which they do not cease to attain is conquered by smell, touch and so on.
May the suns appease that whole footprint of Vishnu.

Mahatmya-
He who recites and hears this Strotra for the destruction of sins.
He is freed from the sins committed by the physical monsters and savogs.
He attains the supreme abode of Vishnu from all sinful planets and others.
Therefore, for the sake of sin, one should chant the Strotra with the sword.
The srotra of the atonement is better for the observers of the vow.
Sin is destroyed by penances, chanting of the Strotras and vows.

Meaning-
Pushkar said – Salutations to the omnipresent Vishnu. Salutations to Shri Hari Vishnu. I bow to the all-pervading, egoless Sri Hari in my mind. I bow down to the unmanifest, infinite and undefeated Supreme Lord who resides in my mind.
Salutations to all-worshipable, free from birth and death, influential Sri Vishnu. Vishnu resides in my mind, Vishnu resides in my intellect, Vishnu resides in me also.
That Sri Vishnu is situated in the form of the deeds of grazing creatures, my sins are destroyed by his contemplation. I bow to the sinless Sri Vishnu, the younger brother of Indra, who removes sins by meditating and gives darshan in dreams by feeling.
I bow before Lord Vishnu, the Supreme Being, who gives support to those who are drowning in the darkness of ignorance in this baseless world.
Almighty Lord! Lotus Lord! Hrishikesh! Greetings to you. Lord of senses Sri Vishno! Greetings to you. Narasimha! Infinite form Govind! Keshav, the creator of all ghosts! The bad words that have been said by me or the sinful thoughts have been done, forgive my sin, salutations to you.
Keshav! Being under the control of my mind, calm down the very fierce sinful thoughts that I have done that cannot be done. Paramarthparayan, Brahmin-loving Govind! Jagannath, who never deviates from his dignity! Deveshwar, the one who nourishes the world! Destroy my sin.
Whatever sins I have committed knowingly or unknowingly through body, mind and speech in the afternoon, afternoon, evening and night, ‘Pundrikaksha’, ‘Hrishikesh’, ‘Madhav’ – all those sins of mine by pronouncing these three names of yours become weak
Kamalnayan! Lakshmi Pate! Lord of the senses Madhav! Today you destroy the sins committed by my body and speech. Whatever subtle or gross sins that I have committed with my mind, speech and body while eating, sleeping, standing, walking or waking up, may they all be destroyed by chanting the name of Lord Vasudev.
May my sins be washed away by the chanting of Sri Vishnu, who is Parabrahma, the supreme abode and the most pure. Having attained which the learned do not return again, which is free from tanmatras like smell, touch etc., may that supreme post of Sri Vishnu remove all my sins.
greatness-
The man who recites or listens to this hymn that destroys sins, he is freed from all the sins of body, mind and speech and attains the supreme position of Sri Vishnu by being free from all the evil planets.
That’s why chant this hymn after committing any sin. This psalm is similar to the atonement of sinful groups. It is also best for those who fast like Krichhar etc. All sins are destroyed by chanting hymns and fasting. That’s why their rituals should be performed for the attainment of enjoyment and salvation.
