एक नया संकल्प
लंदनके वालवर्ध उपनगरके अधिकांश निवासी निर्धन और अशिक्षित थे। यह अपराधियोंकी बस्ती जानी जाती थी।
कैम्ब्रिज विश्वविद्यालयमें अपनी शिक्षा पूरी करके एक युवक वालवर्थमें रहने आया। युवकने धीरे-धीरे बस्तीवालोंसे परिचय बढ़ाया। सबसे पहले उसने बच्चोंपर ध्यान केन्द्रित किया। उनकी शिक्षा और स्वास्थ्यकी चिन्ता की। वह बच्चोंको एकत्र करके उन्हें उत्तम संस्कार देने लगा।
बस्तीके लोगोंने पहली बार अनुभव किया कि ऐसा भी कोई व्यक्ति है, जो उनके बच्चोंका ध्यान रखता है। लोगोंमें युवकके प्रति विश्वास बढ़ा। अपने कामको आगे बढ़ाते हुए युवकने लोगोंसे कहा- ‘प्रति रविवार आप लोग भी कक्षामें आया करें।’
फिर युवकने उन्हें तैयार किया कि वे सप्ताहमें एक दिन कोई अपराध न करें। युवकके सेवाभावसे अभिभूत हो लोगोंने ऐसा करना स्वीकार कर लिया।
फिर लोगोंने स्वयं तय किया कि वे चार दिनोंतक कोई अपराध न करेंगे। यह वहाँके लोगोंके लिये सुखद आश्चर्य था।
धीरे-धीरे लोगोंमें परिवर्तन आया। बदनाम वालवर्थ उपनगरका कायाकल्प हो गया।
यह समाज-सुधारक युवक बादमें भारत जिसे सी0एफ0 एण्ड्रयूज (दीनबन्धु) के नामसे जाना गया, जिसने सारा जीवन भारतमें दीन-दुखियोंकी सेवामें समर्पित कर दिया।
a new resolution
Most of the residents of the London suburb of Walward were poor and illiterate. This was known as the colony of criminals.
A young man came to live in Walworth after completing his education at Cambridge University. The young man gradually increased his acquaintance with the residents. First he focused on the children. Worried about his education and health. He gathered the children and started imparting good manners to them.
The people of the settlement experienced for the first time that there is someone who takes care of their children. People’s faith in the youth increased. Taking his work forward, the young man said to the people- ‘Every Sunday you people also come to the class.’
Then the young man prepared them not to commit any crime for one day in a week. Overwhelmed by the service of the young man, people accepted to do so.
Then the people themselves decided that they would not commit any crime for four days. It was a pleasant surprise for the people there.
Gradually people changed. The infamous Walworth suburb has been rejuvenated.
This social-reformer youth, later known as C.F. Andrews (Deenbandhu) in India, dedicated his whole life to the service of the downtrodden in India.
