Bhartendu Harishchandra had become a pauper because of his immense generosity. A time came when he did not have enough money to send replies to the letters received. Bhartenduji used to write answers to the letters that came, close the envelopes and put them on the table. If there is money to stamp them, letters should be sent. A pile of letters gathered on his desk. One of his friends brought him five rupee stamps and then those letters were put in the post. Bhartenduji’s condition got better. Now whenever those friends used to meet, Bharatenduji would forcefully put five rupees in their pocket and say ‘You don’t remember, your five rupees are in debt to me.’
At last the friend said one day – ‘I will have to stop meeting you now.’
Bhartendu Babu’s eyes filled with tears. They said – ‘Brother! You gave me five rupees at such a time that even if I keep giving you five rupees every day for the rest of my life, I cannot get rid of your debt.’-Su Sin 0
