भक्त आचार्यकी आदर्श विनम्रता

शेषावतार श्रीरामानुज महामुनीन्द्रके पवित्र सम्प्रदायमें श्रीवैष्णव-जगत्के महान् आचार्य श्रीवेङ्कटनाथका प्राकट्य विक्रम संवत् 1325 में विजयादशमीके दिन हुआ था। ये बहुत बड़े विद्वान्, प्रचारक, महान् भक्त, परम आदर्श-चरित्र महात्मा थे। श्रीवेदान्तदेशिकका चमत्कारपूर्ण जीवन सर्वथा वन्दनीय है। श्रीदेशिकजीके जीवनकी एक घटना यहाँ दी जाती है। श्रीदेशिककी प्रतिष्ठासे जलनेवाले कुछ लोग इनसे द्वेष करते थे और वे सदा यही सोचा करते थे कि किसी प्रकार श्रीदेशिककी प्रतिष्ठा भङ्ग हो।

एक दिन कुछ ईर्ष्यालु लोगोंने मिलकर आपके द्वारपर जूतोंकी माला लटका दी । वह इतनी नीची थी कि बाहर निकलते ही उसका सिरमें लगना अवश्यम्भावी था। जब श्रीदेशिकजी अपनी कुटीरसे | बाहर निकले तो उन्होंने इस कुकृत्यको देखा। देखकर वे शान्तिपूर्वक बाहर निकल आये और यह कहने लगे

कर्मावलम्बकाः केचित् केचिज्ज्ञानावलम्बकाः ।

वयं तु हरिदासानां पादरक्षावलम्बकाः॥

अर्थात् ‘कोई कर्ममार्गका अनुसरण करते हैं और कोई ज्ञानमार्गका अनुसरण करते हैं, किंतु हम तो हरिदासों – भगवद्भक्तोंके जूतोंके अनुयायी हैं।’

इन शब्दोंको सुनकर आस-पासके लोग बहुत प्रभावित हुए; और जिन लोगोंने यह कुकृत्य किया था, उनको बड़ी लज्जा आयी। वे आकर श्रीदेशिकके चरणोंपर गिर पड़े और क्षमा माँगने लगे।

Some rely on action, while others rely on knowledge.
We depend on the feet of the servants of the monkeys
That is, ‘Some follow the path of karma and some follow the path of knowledge, but we are followers of the shoes of Haridasas – devotees of the Lord.
The people around him were very impressed when they heard these words; And those who had committed this misdeed were greatly ashamed. He came and fell at the feet of Sridesika and begged for forgiveness.
