एक दिन, भगवान शंकर और माता पार्वती के बीच प्रकृति के महत्व और पुरुष की श्रेष्ठता को लेकर बहस हो गयी। भगवान शंकर ने मां पार्वती से कहा कि संसार एक भ्रम है। प्रकृति भी एक भ्रम है।
माँ पार्वती जो भोजन सहित सभी भौतिक वस्तुओं की जननी हैं, यह सुनकर क्रोधित हो गईं। वो उसी समय लुप्त हो गईं।
उनके लुप्त होने से ब्रह्मांड में हाहाकार मच गया। समय स्थिर हो गया, ऋतु परिवर्तन रुक सा गया, धरती बंजर हो गई और भयानक सूखा पड़ने लगा। आकाश, पाताल और धरती तीनों लोकों में मिलने वाला भोजन उपलब्ध नहीं था। देवता, दानव और मनुष्य भूख से तड़पने लगे।
तब भगवान शिव ने भिक्षु रूप धर कर माता से अन्न की भिक्षा माँगी। माता पार्वती ने अन्नपूर्णा का रूप धरा और शिव को भोजन कराया। साथ ही देवी ने प्रसन्न होकर कहा कि “मैं अन्नपूर्णा के रूप में काशी में निवास करुँगी।”
काशी में विश्वनाथ मंदिर से कुछ दूरी पर माता अन्नपूर्णा मंदिर है। हर वर्ष अन्नकूट उत्सव के दौरान बड़ी संख्या में भक्त माता के दर्शन करते हैं। वर्ष में केवल चार दिन ही माता के स्वर्णमयी स्वरूप के दर्शन होते हैं।

One day, there was an argument between Lord Shankar and Mother Parvati about the importance of nature and the superiority of man. Lord Shankar told Mother Parvati that the world is an illusion. Nature is also an illusion.
Mother Parvati who is the mother of all material things including food got angry hearing this. She disappeared at that very moment.
His disappearance caused hue and cry in the universe. Time stood still, the change of seasons stopped, the earth became barren and a severe drought began. The food available in all the three worlds, sky, underworld and earth was not available. Gods, demons and humans started suffering from hunger.
Then Lord Shiva assumed the form of a monk and begged for food from the mother. Mother Parvati took the form of Annapurna and offered food to Shiva. At the same time, the goddess was pleased and said that “I will reside in Kashi in the form of Annapurna.”
Mata Annapurna Temple is at some distance from Vishwanath Temple in Kashi. Every year during the Annakoot festival, a large number of devotees visit the mother. Mother’s golden form is visible only for four days in a year.
