वीणाका सम्मान
मैसूरके श्रीशेषण्णा वीणा बजानेमें माहिर थे। मैसूरके महाराजा उनका बहुत सम्मान करते थे। हालाँकि यश और सम्मान पानेके बावजूद शेषण्णाके भीतर अहंकार जरा भी नहीं आया था। वह अत्यन्त विनम्र स्वभावके थे।
एक बार बड़ौदा (वड़ोदरा) के महाराजा सयाजीराव गायकवाड़ने शेषण्णाको अपने यहाँ आमन्त्रित किया। शेषण्णा वहाँ गये और अनेक सम्मानित व्यक्तियोंके बीच उन्होंने वीणावादन किया। उनकी वीणा सुनकर वहाँ उपस्थित सभी श्रोता मन्त्रमुग्ध हो गये। कार्यक्रम समाप्त
होनेपर गायकवाड़ चिन्तामें पड़ गये कि पुरस्कारमें श्रीशेषण्णाको क्या दें? मैसूरके महाराजने तो उन्हें पहले ही बहुत कुछ दिया हुआ था। काफी सोच-विचारकर उन्होंने शेषण्णाको एक सुन्दर जड़ाऊ पालकी भेंट की और कहा कि ‘वे अगले दिन उनके दरबारमें पालकीमें बैठकर आयें।’
श्रीशेषण्णा संकोचमें पड़ गये। उन्हें धन-सम्पत्ति और दूसरे तामझामसे कोई खास मतलब नहीं था। बहुत सोच-विचारके बाद दूसरे दिन उन्होंने वीणाको पालकीमें रख दिया और स्वयं पैदल चलकर दरबारमें पहुँचे। उन्हें इस तरह आते देखकर महाराजा गायकवाड़ ‘यह क्या! मैंने तो आपको पालकीमें बैठकर आनेके लिये ‘कहा था।’ इसपर श्रीशेषण्णा बोले-‘महाराज ! आपने मुझे जो सम्मान दिया है, वह इस वीणाके कारण दिया है। इसीके कारण दूसरे लोग भी मुझे सम्मान देते हैं। वीणा मुझसे श्रेष्ठ है, इसलिये पालकीमें बैठनेका सम्मान भी वीणाको ही मिलना चाहिये।’
श्रीशेषण्णाका कलाके प्रति सम्मान देखकर महाराज अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुए।
Veena’s respect
Sreeshanna of Mysore was expert in playing Veena. The Maharaja of Mysore used to respect him a lot. However, in spite of getting fame and respect, there was not an iota of arrogance in Sheshanna. He was very humble in nature.
Once Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda (Vadodara) invited Sheshanna to his place. Seshanna went there and played the veena in the presence of many respected persons. All the listeners present there were mesmerized after listening to his veena. program finished
Gaikwad got worried as to what to give to Sreeshanna as a prize. The Maharaja of Mysore had already given him a lot. After a lot of thought, he presented a beautiful inlaid palanquin to Seshanna and told him to ‘come to his court the next day in a palanquin.’
Sreeshanna hesitated. He didn’t care much about wealth and other frills. After much thought, the next day he put the veena in the palanquin and himself reached the court on foot. Seeing him coming like this, Maharaja Gaekwad ‘What is this! I ‘told’ you to come sitting in the palanquin. On this Shrisheshanna said – ‘ Maharaj! The respect you have given to me is because of this veena. Because of this other people also respect me. Veena is superior to me, so Veena should also get the honor of sitting in the palanquin.’
Maharaj was very pleased to see Sri Sheshanna’s respect for art.
