सच्ची दृष्टि

प्राचीन कालमें सिंहलद्वीपके अनुराधपुर नगरसे बाहर एक टीला था, उसे चैत्यपर्वत कहा जाता था। उसपर महातिष्य नामके एक बौद्ध भिक्षु रहा करते थे। एक दिन वे भिक्षा माँगने नगरकी ओर जा रहे थे। मार्गमें एक युवती स्त्री मिली। वह अपने पतिसे झगड़ा करके अपने पिताके घर भागी जा रही थी। उस स्त्रीका आचरण संदिग्ध था । भिक्षुको देखकर उन्हें अपनी ओर आकर्षित करनेके लिये वह हँसने लगी।

भिक्षु महातिष्य बराबर चिन्तन करते रहते थे कि मनुष्य-शरीर हड्डी-मांसका पिंजड़ा है। उस स्त्रीके हँसनेपर भिक्षुकी दृष्टि उसके दाँतोंपर गयी। स्त्रीके सौन्दर्यकी ओरतो उनकी चित्तवृत्ति गयी नहीं, केवल यह भाव उनके मनमें आया कि यह एक हड्डियोंका पिंजड़ा जा रहा है। स्त्री आगे चली गयी। थोड़ी दूर जानेपर नगरकी ओरसे आता एक पुरुष मिला। वह उस स्त्रीका पति था। अपनी पत्नीको वह ढूँढ़ने निकला था। उसने भिक्षुसे पूछा – ‘महाराज ! इस मार्गसे गहने पहिने जाती किसी सुन्दरी युवती स्त्रीको आपने देखा है ? ‘

भिक्षु बोले—’ इधरसे कोई पुरुष गया या स्त्री, इस बातपर तो मेरा ध्यान गया नहीं; किंतु इतना मुझे पता है कि इस मार्गसे अभी एक अस्थिपञ्जर गया है।’

In ancient times, there was a mound outside the city of Anuradhapura in Sinhala Island, it was called Chaitya Parvat. A Buddhist monk named Mahatishya used to live on it. One day he was going towards the city to beg. A young woman was found on the way. She was running away to her father’s house after quarreling with her husband. The behavior of that woman was suspicious. Seeing the monks, she started laughing to attract them towards her.
Monk Mahatishya used to constantly think that the human body is a cage of flesh and bones. When that woman laughed, the monk’s eyes fell on her teeth. His mind did not go towards the beauty of the woman, only this feeling came in his mind that it is going to be a cage of bones. The woman went ahead. After going a little distance, a man was found coming from the side of the city. He was the husband of that woman. He had gone out to find his wife. He asked the monk – ‘ Maharaj! Have you seen any beautiful young woman wearing ornaments on this route? ,
The monk said – ‘ Whether a man or a woman went from here, I did not pay attention to this; But this much I know that a skeleton has just gone through this route.’
