सूर्याजी पंतका सुपुत्र नारायण बचपनसे ही विरक्त सा रहता, तप और ज्ञानार्जनमें ही उसका बचपन बीता। माँ पुत्रवधूका मुँह देखनेके लिये उतावली हो रही थी। आखिर पिताने वह योग जुटा ही दिया।
बारह वर्षका किशोर नारायण बरातियोंकी भीड़में धूम-धाम और बाजे-गाजेके साथ विवाह मण्डपमें पहुँचा। ब्राह्मणोंने अन्तः पट लगाया। एक ओर वधू हाथमें सौभाग्य माल लेकर अखण्ड सौभाग्यके लिये गौरीको मना रही थी तो दूसरी ओर वरराज प्राप्त ज्ञानके आधारपर प्रपञ्चसे सावधान रहनेका चिन्तन कर रहे थे। आज्ञाकी ही देर थी।मङ्गलाष्टक शुरू हुए। ब्राह्मणोंने ‘शुभ मङ्गल, सावधान!’ कहा ! ‘संसारकी दुःखप्रद बेड़ी तुम्हारे पैरोंमें पड़ने जा रही है, इसलिये सावधान!’ नारायणको यह अर्थ समझते देर न लगी। ‘ब्रह्मवाक्यं जनार्दनः ‘ नारायण तत्काल उठकर भाग निकला।
बारह वर्ष कठोर तप और फिर अखिल भारतके तीर्थोंकी यात्रा करता, प्रपञ्चमें परमार्थ-साधनाके साथ सावधानताका उपदेश देता वह साधु अपने इष्ट-देवकी कृपासे ‘रामदास’ और फिर ‘समर्थ’ बन गया।

Twelve-year-old boy Narayan reached the marriage hall with pomp and fanfare in the crowd of baraatis. The Brahmins put up a partition. On the one hand, the bride was celebrating Gauri with good fortune in her hand for eternal good luck, while on the other hand, the king was thinking of being careful from the world on the basis of the knowledge gained. It was too late to obey. Mangalashtak started. Brahmins said ‘Good luck, be careful!’ Told ! ‘The sorrowful shackles of the world are going to fall at your feet, so be careful!’ It didn’t take long for Narayan to understand this meaning. ‘Brahmavakyam Janardan:’ Narayan immediately got up and ran away.
Twelve years of rigorous penance and then traveling to pilgrimages all over India, preaching caution in the world with spiritual practice, that monk became ‘Ramdas’ and then ‘Samarth’ by the grace of his Ishta-Dev.
