भारत में पंजाब में स्थित सरहिन्द में दुनिया की सबसे महंगी भूमि को ख़रीदने वाले महान व्यक्ति का नाम था दीवान टोडर मल….
गुरु गोबिंद सिंह जी के छोटे-छोटे साहिबज़ादों बाबा फ़तेह सिंह और बाबा ज़ोरावर सिंह की शहादत की दास्तान शायद आप सबने सुनी होगी ।
सरहिन्द के फ़तेहगढ़ साहिब में मुग़लों के तत्कालीन फ़ौजदार वज़ीर खान ने दोनों साहिबज़ादों को जीवित ही दीवार में चिनवा दिया था।
दीवान टोडर मल जो कि इस क्षेत्र के एक धनी व्यक्ति थे और गुरु गोविंद सिंह जी एवं उनके परिवार के लिए अपना सब कुछ क़ुर्बान करने को तैयार थे।
उन्होंने वज़ीर खान से साहिबज़ादों और माता गूजरी के पार्थिव शरीर की माँग की और वह भूमि जहाँ वह शहीद हुए थे वहीं पर उनकी अंत्येष्टि करने की इच्छा प्रकट की! लेकिन वज़ीर खान ने धृष्टता दिखाते हुए भूमि देने के लिए एक अटपटी और अनुचित माँग रखी।
वज़ीर खान ने माँग रखी कि इस भूमि पर सोने की मोहरें बिछाने पर जितनी मोहरें आएँगी वही इस भूमि का दाम होगी ।
दीवान टोडर मल ने अपने सब भंडार ख़ाली करके जब मोहरें भूमि पर बिछानी शुरू की तो वज़ीर खान ने धृष्टता की पराकाष्ठा पार करते हुए कहा कि मोहरें बिछा कर नहीं बल्कि खड़ी करके रखी जाएँगी ताकि अधिक से अधिक मोहरें वसूली जा सकें।
ख़ैर..दीवान टोडर मल ने अपना सब कुछ बेच कर और मोहरे इकट्ठी की और 78000 सोने की मोहरे देकर चार गज़ भूमि को ख़रीदा ताकि गुरु जी के साहिबज़ादों का अंतिम संस्कार वहाँ किया जा सके।विश्व के इतिहास में ना तो ऐसे त्याग की कहीं कोई और मिसाल मिलती है.. ना ही कहीं पर किसी भूमि के टुकड़े का इतना भारी मूल्य कहीं और आज तक चुकाया गया।
जब बाद में गुरु गोविन्द सिंह जी को इस बारे में पता चला तो उन्होंने दीवान टोडर मल से कृतज्ञता प्रकट की और उनसे कहा की वे उनके त्याग से बहुत प्रभावित हैं और उनसे इस त्याग के बदले में कुछ माँगने को कहा।
दीवान जी ने गुरु जी से जो माँगा उसकी कल्पना करना भी असम्भव है !
दीवान टोडर मल जी ने गुरु जी से कहा की यदि कुछ देना ही चाहते हैं तो कुछ ऐसा वर दीजिए की मेरे घर पर कोई पुत्र ना जन्म ले और मेरी वंशावली यहीं मेरे साथ ही समाप्त हो जाए।
इस अप्रत्याशित माँग पर गुरु जी सहित सब लोग हक्के-बक्के रह गए.. गुरु जी ने दीवान जी से इस अद्भुत माँग का कारण पूछा तो दीवान टोडर मल ने उत्तर दिया कि गुरु जी, यह जो भूमि इतना महंगा दाम देकर ख़रीदी गई और आपके चरणों में न्योछावर की गयी मैं नहीं चाहता की कल को मेरे वंश आने वाली नस्लों में से कोई कहे की यह भूमि मेरे पुरखों ने ख़रीदी थी।
यह थी निस्वार्थ त्याग और भक्ति की आज तक की सबसे बड़ी मिसाल…
आज किसी धार्मिक स्थल पर चार ईंटे लगवाने पर भी लोग अपने नाम की पट्टी पहले लगवाते हैं…पर देश के इस महान सपूत ने अपने दान का श्रेय अपने पुरखों तक को देना भी गवारा नहीं किया जो अपने आप में एक मिसाल हैं।

Om Namo Naraynay The name of the great person who bought the world’s most expensive land in Sirhind located in Punjab in India was Diwan Todar Mal….
You all must have probably heard the story of the martyrdom of Baba Fateh Singh and Baba Zorawar Singh, the little Sahibzads of Guru Gobind Singh ji. In Sirhind’s Fatehgarh Sahib, the then Mughal soldier Wazir Khan had both the Sahibzadas walled up alive.
Diwan Todar Mal who was a wealthy man in the region and was ready to sacrifice everything for Guru Gobind Singh ji and his family. He demanded the mortal remains of Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri from Wazir Khan and expressed his desire to cremate them on the land where they were martyred! But Wazir Khan, showing audacity, put forth a strange and unreasonable demand for the grant of land.
Wazir Khan demanded that the value of this land would be the number of stamps that would come on laying gold stamps on this land. When Dewan Todar Mal, after emptying all his stores, started laying the coins on the ground, Wazir Khan crossed the height of audacity and said that the coins would not be spread but would be kept standing so that more and more coins could be collected.
Well..Diwan Todar Mal sold his everything and collected pawns and bought four yards of land by giving 78000 gold pawns so that the last rites of Guru ji’s Sahibzadas could be performed there. Neither in the history of the world has such a sacrifice been made anywhere. No other example is found.. Nor has such a heavy price for a piece of land been paid anywhere else till date.
Later when Guru Gobind Singh ji came to know about this, he expressed his gratitude to Dewan Todar Mal and told him that he was very impressed by his sacrifice and asked him to ask for something in return for this sacrifice.
It is impossible to even imagine what Diwan ji asked from Guru ji!
Diwan Todar Mal ji told Guru ji that if you want to give something, then give such a boon that no son is born in my house and my genealogy ends here with me.
Everyone including Guru ji was stunned at this unexpected demand. When Guru ji asked Diwan ji the reason for this wonderful demand, Diwan Todar Mal replied that Guru ji, this land which was bought at such an expensive price and is not yours. Sacrificed at the feet, I do not want that tomorrow any of the descendants of my descendants should say that this land was bought by my forefathers.
This was the biggest example of selfless sacrifice and devotion till date. Today, even after installing four bricks at a religious place, people put their name first… but this great son of the country did not bother to give credit for his donation to his forefathers, who are an example in themselves.
