एक राजा था,उसके चार बेटे थे। एक दिन राजा ने उन्हें बुलाकर कहा,‘‘जाओ, किसी धर्मात्मा को खोज लाओ,जो सबसे बड़े धर्मात्मा को लाएगा मैं उसी को गद्दी पर बिठा दूंगा।’’ चारों लड़के चले गए।
कुछ दिन बाद बड़ा लड़का लौटा।वह अपने साथ एक सेठ को लाया था।उसने राजा से कहा,‘‘यह सेठ जी खूब दान-पुण्य करते हैं,इन्होंने मंदिर बनवाए हैं,तालाब खुदवाए हैं,प्याऊ लगवाए हैं, नित्य साधु-संतों को भोजन करवाते हैं।’’राजा ने उनका सत्कार किया और वह चले गए।
इसके बाद दूसरा लड़का एक दुबले-पतले ब्राह्मण को लाया। बोला,‘‘इन्होंने चारों धामों और सातों पीढ़ियों की पैदल यात्रा की है।व्रत करते हैं और झूठ नहीं बोलते।’’
राजा ने उन्हें भी दक्षिणा देकर विदा किया।फिर तीसरा लड़का एक और साधु को लेकर आया।आते ही साधु ने आसन लगाया और आंखें बंद करके ध्यान करने लगा।लड़के ने कहा,‘‘यह बड़े तपस्वी हैं। रात-दिन में सिर्फ एक बार खाते हैं,और वह भी धूप-गर्मी में पंचाग्रि तापते हैं।जाड़ों में शीतल जल में खड़े होते हैं।’’
राजा ने उनका स्वागत किया, तत्पश्चात वे भी प्रस्थान कर गए।
चौथा लड़का जब लौटा तो अपने साथ मैले-कुचैले कपड़े पहने एक देहाती को लाया। बोला,‘‘यह एक कुत्ते के घाव धो रहे थे।मैं इन्हें नहीं जानता। आप ही पूछ लीजिए कि यह धर्मात्मा हैं या नहीं।’’
राजा ने पूछा,‘‘क्या तुम धर्म-कर्म करते हो?’’
वह बोला,‘‘मैं अनपढ़ हूं। धर्म-कर्म क्या होता है,नहीं जानता।कोई बीमार होता है तो सेवा कर देता हूं।कोई मांगता है तो अन्न दे देता हूं।’’
राजा ने कहा,‘‘यही सबसे बड़ा धर्मात्मा है।सबसे बड़ा धर्म बिना किसी इच्छा के असहायों की सेवा करना है। दान-धर्म के पीछे भावना भी पवित्र होनी चाहिए..!!’’

After this another boy brought a lean Brahmin. Said, “He has traveled on foot to all four dhams and seven generations. He fasts and does not lie.” The king also sent him away by giving dakshina. Then the third boy brought another monk. As soon as he arrived, the monk sat down and started meditating with his eyes closed. The boy said, “He is a great ascetic. He eats only once a day and night, and that too heats Panchagri in the sun and heat. In winters he stands in cold water. The king welcomed him, after which he also left. When the fourth boy returned, he brought with him a villager dressed in dirty clothes. Said, “He was washing the wounds of a dog. I don’t know him.” You yourself ask whether he is religious or not. The king asked, “Do you do religious work?” He said, “I am illiterate. I don’t know what religious deeds are. If someone is sick, I serve. If someone asks, I give food.
