सिर झुकता है, पगड़ी नहीं
‘तुम चारण-जातिके होकर भी सभाकी रीति नीति नहीं जानते। मुझे तो यह जानकारी थी कि राजपूतानेके चारण बड़े ही विद्वान् तथा कवि भी होते हैं। तुमने यहाँ आकर दरबारके नियमके अनुसार अभिवादन न करके शिष्टाचारका पालन नहीं किया। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि तुम एक अपढ़ अशिष्ट व्यक्ति हो, जो दरबारमें मेरे सामने उपस्थित हुए हो।’ अकबरने ये शब्द शीतल नामक चारणसे कहे। शीतलने बड़ी सहजतासे उत्तर दिया- ‘जहाँपनाह, धृष्टता क्षमा करें। भला मेरी क्या मजाल कि मैं आपको सलाम न करूँ। बात यह है हुजूर कि ‘मेरे सिरपर बँधी पगड़ी महाराणा प्रतापसे मुझे भेंटमें प्राप्त हुई है और महाराणा प्रताप आजतक शत्रुके सम्मुख कभी भी नत नहीं हुए।’ आप ही बताइये सरकार, क्या मुझे महाराणाकी पगड़ीको इस प्रकार झुकानेका अधिकार है? मैंने इसीलिये आपका अभिवादन नहीं किया।’
इतना कहकर उसने पगड़ी अपने हाथमें ले ली और सिर झुका दिया। राजस्थानकी पगड़ी नहीं झुकती। शीतलका सिर तो नत हुआ, परंतु मन नहीं।

head bows, no turban
‘You don’t know the customs and policies of the meeting even though you are of Charan-caste. I knew that Rajputana’s charans are very learned and poets as well. You didn’t follow the etiquette by coming here and not greeting according to the rules of the court. It seems that you are an uneducated rude person who has appeared before me in the court.’ Akbar said these words to a Charan named Sheetal. Sheetal replied very easily – ‘ Jahanpanah, forgive the impudence. How dare I not salute you. Sir, the thing is that ‘I have received the turban tied on my head as a gift from Maharana Pratap and Maharana Pratap has never bowed down in front of the enemy till date.’ You tell the government, do I have the right to bow the turban of Maharana like this? That’s why I didn’t greet you.’
Having said this, he took the turban in his hand and bowed his head. The turban of Rajasthan does not bow down. Sheetal’s head bowed, but not the mind.
