महान् कौन है

एक बार देवर्षिके मनमें यह जाननेकी इच्छा हुई कि जगत्में सबसे महान् कौन है। उन्होंने सोचा कि चलूँ भगवान् के पास ही। वहीं इसका ठीक-ठीक पता लग सकेगा। वे सीधे वैकुण्ठमें गये और वहाँ जाकर प्रभुसे अपना मनोभाव व्यक्त किया।

प्रभुने कहा- नारद! सबसे बड़ी तो यह पृथ्वी ही दीखती है; पर वह समुद्रसे घिरी हुई है, अतएव वह भी बड़ी नहीं है। रही बात समुद्रकी, सो उसे अगस्त्य मुनि पी गये थे, अतः वह भी बड़ा कैसे हो सकता है। इससे तो अगस्त्यजी सबसे बड़े हो गये। पर देखा जाता है कि अनन्ताकाशके एक सीमित सूचिका-सदृश भागमें वे केवल एक खद्योतवत्-जुगनूकी तरह चमक रहे हैं; इससे वे भी बड़े कैसे हो सकते हैं? अब रहाआकाशविषयक प्रश्न । प्रसिद्ध है कि भगवान् विष्णुने वामनावतारमें इस आकाशको एक ही पगमें नाप लिया था, अतएव वह भी उनके सामने अत्यन्त नगण्य है। इस दृष्टिसे भगवान् विष्णु ही सर्वोपरि महान् सिद्ध होते हैं। तथापि नारद! वे भी सर्वाधिक महान् हैं नहीं, क्योंकि तुम्हारे हृदयमें वे भी अङ्गुष्ठमात्र स्थलमें ही सर्वदा अवरुद्ध देखे जाते हैं। इसलिये भैया! तुमसे बड़ा कौन है ? वास्तवमें तुम ही सबसे महान् सिद्ध हुए

पृथ्वी तावदतीव विस्तृतिमती तद्वेष्टनं वारिधिः

पीतोऽसौ कलशोद्भवेन मुनिना स व्योम्नि खद्योतवत् ।

तद्व्याप्तं दनुजाधिपस्य जयिना पादेन चैकेन खं

तं त्वं चेतसि धारयस्यविरतं त्वत्तोऽस्ति नान्यो महान् ॥

Once Devarshi had a desire to know who is the greatest in the world. He thought that he should go to God only. It will be known exactly there. He went straight to Vaikuntha and went there and expressed his feelings to the Lord.
The Lord said – Narad! Only this earth is visible as the biggest; But it is surrounded by sea, so it is also not big. As for the ocean, Agastya Muni drank it, so how can it also become big. Due to this, Agastyaji became the greatest. But it is seen that in a limited index-like part of the infinite space they are shining only like a khadyotavat-firefly; How can they be bigger than this? Now the celestial question. It is famous that Lord Vishnu in Vamanavatar had measured this sky in just one step, so that too is very insignificant in front of him. From this point of view only Lord Vishnu proves to be great above all. However Narad! They are also not the greatest, because in your heart they are always seen blocked only at the place of the thumb. That’s why brother! who is bigger than you indeed you proved to be the greatest

Pito’sau kalshodbhaven munina sa vyomni khadyotavat.
Tadvyaptam danujadhipasya jayina paden chaken khan
तं त्वं चेतसि धरयस्यविरतं त्वट्टोऽस्ति नन्यो महान ॥
