चरित्र-बल
नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता सी0वी0 रमण भौतिकशास्त्र के प्रख्यात वैज्ञानिक थे। अपने विभागके लिये उन्हें एक योग्य वैज्ञानिककी जरूरत थी। कई लोग साक्षात्कारके लिये आये। जब साक्षात्कार खत्म हो गया, तब उन्होंने देखा कि एक व्यक्ति, जिसको उन्होंने अयोग्य सिद्ध कर दिया था, कार्यालयके आस-पास घूम रहा है। उन्होंने क्रोधित होकर उस व्यक्तिसे पूछा कि ‘जब तुम्हें अयोग्य घोषित कर दिया गया है, तब तुम यहाँ क्यों घूम रहे हो ?’
उस व्यक्तिने विनयी भावसे कहा-‘आप नाराज न हों। मुझे यहाँ आने-जानेके लिये जो राशि दी गयी है, वह शायद गलतीसे कुछ अधिक दे दी गयी है। इसलिये मैं उस अतिरिक्त राशिको लौटानेके लिये कार्यालयके लिपिककी तलाश कर रहा हूँ।’
सी0वी0 रमण उस व्यक्तिकी बात सुनकर विस्मित रह गये। फिर थोड़ा रुककर बोले-‘अब तुम कहीं मत जाना, मैंने तुम्हारा चयन कर लिया है। तुम चरित्रवान् व्यक्ति हो। भौतिकशास्त्रके ज्ञानकी कमजोरी तो मैं किसीको पढ़ाकर दूर कर दूँगा, परंतु ऐसा चरित्र मैं कैसे निर्मित कर सकूँगा ?’
strength of character
Nobel laureate C.V. Raman was an eminent scientist in physics. He needed a qualified scientist for his department. Many people came for the interview. When the interview was over, he noticed that the man he had disqualified was loitering around the office. He got angry and asked the person that ‘when you have been disqualified, then why are you roaming here?’
That person politely said – ‘ Don’t be angry. The amount given to me for traveling here, may have been given a bit more by mistake. That’s why I am looking for the office clerk to return that extra amount.’
C.V. Raman was astonished to hear the words of that person. Then stopped for a while and said – ‘ Now don’t go anywhere, I have selected you. You are a person of character. I will remove the weakness of physics knowledge by teaching someone, but how can I create such a character?’
