अठारहवीं शताब्दीके इटली देशके प्रसिद्ध संत अलफान्सस लिग्योरी अपने पूर्वाश्रममें वकीलका काम करते थे।

एक समयकी बात है। वे न्यायालयमें बहस कर रहे थे। उनकी बहसकी शैलीसे प्रभावित होकर न्यायालय अपना निर्णय उनके पक्षमें देना चाहता था। विरोध पक्षके वकीलने केवल इतना ही कहा कि अलफान्सस महोदयको अपनी बहसपर एक बार फिर विचार कर लेना चाहिये। अलफान्ससको अचानकस्मरण हो आया कि एक ऐसी नकारात्मक बातकी उन्होंने उपेक्षा कर दी है जिससे विरोधी पक्षका लाभ हो सकता था, पर न्यायालयने उन्हें विश्वास दिलाया कि यह ऐसी बात नहीं है जिससे निर्णयमें कोई अन्तर आये और उपस्थित लोगोंने उनकी बहसकी बड़ी प्रशंसा की।

पर उन्हें तो अपनी भूल खटकती रही। वे न्यायालयके सामने सादर विनत हो गये ‘झूठकी दुनिया! मैं तुम्हें नमस्कार करता हूँ। मैंतुम्हें समझ गया और तुमसे भर पाया।’ कहते हुए अलफान्सस न्यायालयके बाहर हो गये। उन्होंने वकालत छोड़ दी; वे अभी नौजवान थे पर उन्होंने जीविकाकेमिथ्या साधनको तिलाञ्जलि देकर आत्माकी खोज आरम्भ की परमात्माके प्रेम-राज्यमें प्रवेश करनेके लिये।- रा0 श्री0

Alphonse Liguori, the famous saint of eighteenth century Italy, used to work as a lawyer in his former home.
Once upon a time. They were arguing in the court. Impressed by his style of argument, the court wanted to give its decision in his favor. The counsel for the opposition side only said that Mr. Alphonsus should consider his argument once again. Alphonso suddenly remembered that he had overlooked a negative point which could have benefited the opposing side, but the court assured him that it was not such a thing that it would make any difference in the decision and the people present praised his argument.
But his mistake kept bothering him. They respectfully pleaded in front of the court, ‘The world of lies! I greet you I understood you and was filled with you.’ Saying, Alphonse went out of the court. He gave up law; He was still young, but he renounced the false means of livelihood and started the search for the soul in order to enter the kingdom of love of God.- Ra0 Shri0
