सभ्यता और सज्जनताकी कसौटी
काषायवस्त्रधारी स्वामी विवेकानन्द अमेरिकाके शिकागोनगरमें सड़कसे जा रहे थे। उनका यह वेश अमेरिकावासियोंके लिये कौतूहलकी वस्तु था। पीछे आ रही एक अमेरिकन महिलाने अपने साथी पुरुषसे कहा—’जरा इन महाशयकी एक अजीब पोशाकको तो देखो!’
स्वामीजीने वह व्यंग्य सुना। वे जरारुकेऔर
मुड़कर उस महिलासे बोले-‘देवी! आपके देशमें दर्जी सभ्यताके उत्पादक और कपड़े सज्जनताकी कसौटी माने जाते हैं, पर जिस देशसे मैं आया हूँ, वहाँ कपड़ोंसे नहीं, मनुष्यके चरित्रसे उसकी पहचान की जाती है।’
यह सुनकर वह महिला बड़ी ही लज्जित हुई।

Orange-clad Swami Vivekananda was walking down the street in Chicago, America. His disguise was a matter of curiosity for the Americans. An American woman coming behind said to her fellow man – ‘Just look at this gentleman’s strange dress!’
Swamiji heard that sarcasm. they stop and
Turning and said to that woman – ‘ Goddess! In your country, tailors are considered producers of civilization and clothes are considered the test of gentleman, but in the country where I come from, it is not identified by clothes, but by the character of a man.’
The woman was very ashamed to hear this.
