पहले पात्रता, तब दीक्षा
एक बार एक धनी वणिक्ने एक महात्मासे दीक्षादेनेका अनुरोध किया। साधुने बात टालनेका प्रयत्न
किया, किंतु वणिक्ने पाँव पकड़ लिये। अन्तमें साधु कुछ समय बाद आकर दीक्षा देनेका वचन देकर चला गया।
पाँच पखवारे बाद महात्मा उसी वणिक्के द्वारपर आये और भिक्षाके लिये आवाज लगायी। वणिक्ने स्वर पहचान लिया और एक-से-एक बढ़कर पकवानोंसे थाली सजाकर ले आया। उसे आशा थी कि सन्त इस बार दीक्षा अवश्य देंगे।
साधुने अपना कमण्डलु आगे करते हुए कहा कि ‘भोजन इसीमें डाल दो।’ वणिक्ने देखा कमण्डलुमें फूड़ा-करकट आदि बहुत-सी गन्दगी भरी हुई थी। उसने साधुसे कहा- ‘महात्मन्। आपका कमण्डलु तो बहुत ही गन्दा है, उसमें भोजन अशुद्ध एवं अभोज्य हो जायगा।’
साधुने तुरंत उत्तर दिया- ‘कमण्डलुकी
गन्दगीसे जिस प्रकार भोजन अशुद्ध हो
जायगा, उसी प्रकार विषय-विकारोंसे मलिन अन्तःकरणमें दीक्षा अशुद्ध हो जायगी। उसका कोई फल न निकलेगा।’
वणिक्ने सन्तका आशय समझकर प्रणाम किया और कहा-‘महाराज मुझे अभी दीक्षाकी आवश्यकता नहीं है। पहले पात्रता उत्पन्न करूँगा, तब दीक्षाकी इच्छा।’
First eligibility, then initiation
Once a rich merchant requested a Mahatma to initiate him. monk try to avoid talk
Did it, but Vanikne caught hold of his feet. At last the monk came after some time and went away after promising to give initiation.
After five fortnight the Mahatma came to the door of the same merchant and called for alms. Vanikne recognized the voice and one by one went ahead and brought the plate decorated with dishes. He was hopeful that the saint would definitely give initiation this time.
The monk, while putting forward his kamandalu, said, ‘Put the food in it.’ Vanikne saw that the kamandalu was filled with a lot of filth like boils and cancer. He said to the monk – ‘ Mahatman. Your kamandalu is very dirty, the food in it will become impure and inedible.’
The monk immediately replied – ‘Kamandaluki
as food is polluted by filth
Will go, in the same way the initiation will become impure in the conscience dirty with the disorders of the subject. It will not bear any fruit.’
Vanikne bowed down understanding the saint’s intention and said-‘ Maharaj, I don’t need initiation right now. First I will generate eligibility, then the desire for initiation.’
