हस्त-लेखका मूल्य

1925 के जूनमें, जब गांधीजीका खादी-प्रचार तथा चरखा उद्योगका प्रयत्न चल रहा था, देशबन्धु चितरञ्जन दासने उनसे दार्जिलिंगमें अपने यहाँ ठहरकर कुछ दिन विश्राम करनेका नम्र प्रस्ताव रखा। गांधीजीने वहाँ पाँच दिन ठहरना स्वीकार कर लिया। अब देशबन्धुजीका घर एक आकर्षणका केन्द्र बन गया और दार्जिलिंगका पर्वतीय स्थान चरखोंसे गूँज उठा।

उन दिनों गांधीजीके पास फोटोग्राफरों तथा स्वहस्त लेख- याचकों (autograph hunters) की खासी भीड़ सी रहती। पर गांधीजी उन लोगोंसे अपना मूल्य कुछ ले लेते। वे कहते कि हमारा मूल्य आधुनिक है और वह है * आधा घंटा प्रतिदिन चरखा कातना और खादी धारण करना।’एक दिन एक लड़की अपनी स्वहस्त-लेख-संग्रह पुस्तिका (autograph book ) – के साथ महात्मा गांधीके पास आयी। जब गांधीजीने परिस्थिति बतलायी, तब उसने वैसा करने (चर्खा कातने तथा खादी पहनने) -की प्रतिज्ञा की। गांधीजीने – ‘तो धन्यवाद ! लो, मैं यह अपना स्वहस्त-लेख (autograph) दिये देता हूँ,’ कहते हुए यों उसकी पुस्तिकापर लिख दिया- ‘Never make a promise in haste. Having once made a promise, fulfil it even at the cost of your life. (जल्दीमें कभी कोई प्रतिज्ञा न करो। पर एक बार प्रतिज्ञा कर लेनेपर उसे प्राणपणसे निभा दो ।) ‘

In June 1925, when Gandhiji’s Khadi-promotion and Charkha industry efforts were going on, Deshbandhu Chitranjan Das made a humble offer to him to stay at his place in Darjeeling and rest for a few days. Gandhiji accepted to stay there for five days. Now Deshbandhuji’s house became a center of attraction and the hill station of Darjeeling echoed with charkhas.
In those days, there used to be a huge crowd of photographers and autograph hunters near Gandhiji. But Gandhiji would have taken something of his value from those people. They used to say that our values ​​are modern and that is *spinning a charkha for half an hour every day and wearing khadi.’ One day a girl came to Mahatma Gandhi with her autograph book. When Gandhiji pointed out the situation, he vowed to do the same (spinning charkha and wearing khadi). Gandhiji – ‘So thank you! Here, I give this my autograph,’ saying thus wrote on his notebook- ‘Never make a promise in haste. Having once made a promise, fulfill it even at the cost of your life. (Never make a promise in a hurry. But once you have made a promise, fulfill it wholeheartedly.)
