भक्त हरिदास हरिनामके मतवाले थे। ये जन्मसे मुसलमान थे, पर इनको भगवान्का नाम लिये बिना चैन नहीं पड़ता था। फुलिया गाँवमें गोराई काजी नामक एक कट्टर मुसलमान था। उसने हरिदासकी शिकायत मुलुकपतिसे की और कहा – ‘इस काफिरको ऐसी सजा देनी चाहिये जिससे सब डर जायँ और आगेसे कोई भी ऐसा नापाक काम करनेकी हिम्मत न करे। इसे सीधी चालसे नहीं मारना चाहिये। इसकी पीठपर बेंत मारते हुए इसे बाईस बाजारोंमें घुमाया जाय और बेंत मारते-मारते इसको इतनी पीड़ा हो कि उसीसे यह तड़प-तड़पकर मर जाय।’ मुलुकपतिने आदेश दे दिया।
बेंत मारनेवाले जल्लादोंने भक्त हरिदासजीको बाँध लिया और उनकी पीठपर बेंत मारते-मारते उन्हें बाजारों में घुमाने लगे। पर हरिदासजीके मुँहसे हरिनामकी ध्वनि बंद नहीं हुई। जल्लाद कहते – ‘हरिनाम बंद करो।’ हरिदासजी कहते- ‘भैया! मुझे एक बेंत मारो, पर तुम हरिनाम लेते रहो; इसी बहाने तुम्हारे मुँहसे हरिका नाम तो निकलेगा।’ बेंतोंकी मारसे हरिदासकी चमड़ी उधड़ गयी। खूनकी धारा बहने लगी। पर निर्दयी जल्लादोंके हाथ बंद नहीं हुए। इधर हरिदासकी नाम-धुन भी बंद नहीं हुई।
अन्तमें हरिदासजी बेहोश होकर जमीनपर गिर पड़े। जल्लादोंने उन्हें मरा समझकर गङ्गाजीमें बहा दिया। गङ्गाजीके शीतल जल-स्पर्शसे उन्हें चेतना प्राप्त हो गयी और वे बहते-बहते फुलिया गाँवके समीप घाटपर आ पहुँचे। लोगोंने बड़ा हर्ष प्रकट किया। मुलुकपतिको भी अपने कृत्यपर पश्चात्ताप हुआ। पर लोगोंमें मुलुकपतिके विरुद्ध बड़ा जोश आ गया। इसपर हरिदासजीने कहा ‘इसमें इनका क्या अपराध था। मनुष्य अपने कर्मोंका ही फल भोगता है। दूसरे तो उसमें निमित्त बनते हैं। फिर यहाँ तो इनको निमित्त बनाकर मेरे भगवान्ने मेरी परीक्षा ली है। नाममें मेरी रुचि है या मैं ढोंग ही करताहूँ, यह जानना चाहा है। मैं तो कुछ था नहीं, उन्हींकी कृपाशक्तिने मुझे अपनी चेतनाके अन्तिम श्वासतक नामकीर्तनमें दृढ़ रखा। इनका कोई अपराध हो तो भगवान् इनको क्षमा करें।’संतकी वाणी सुनकर सभी गद्गद होकर धन्य धन्य पुकार उठे। मुलुकपति तथा गोराई काजीपर भी बड़ा प्रभाव पड़ा और वे भी नामकीर्तनके प्रेमी बन गये तथा हरिनाम लेने लगे।
Devotee Haridas was intoxicated by the name of Harin. He was a Muslim by birth, but he could not rest without taking the name of God. There was a staunch Muslim named Gorai Kazi in Phulia village. He complained about Haridas to Mulukpati and said – ‘ This infidel should be punished in such a way that everyone gets scared and no one dares to do such a nefarious act in future. It should not be hit with a straight move. He should be taken around twenty-two markets with a cane on his back and he should be in so much pain while being beaten that he may die in agony.’ Mulukpati gave the order.
The cane-wielding executioners tied up the devotee Haridasji and started making him roam around the markets while beating his back with a cane. But the sound of Harinam did not stop from Haridasji’s mouth. The executioner would say – ‘Stop Harinam.’ Haridasji says – ‘Brother! Hit me with a cane, but you keep chanting Harinam; With this excuse, the name Harika will come out of your mouth.’ Haridas’s skin was torn off by the blows of the canes. The stream of blood started flowing. But the hands of the ruthless executioners did not stop. Here Haridas’s name-dhun also did not stop.
At last, Haridasji fainted and fell on the ground. The executioners thought him dead and threw him into the Ganges. By the touch of Gangaji’s cool water, he regained consciousness and he reached the Ghat near Phulia village. People expressed great joy. Mulukpati also regretted his act. But there was great enthusiasm among the people against the Mulukpati. On this Haridasji said, ‘ What was his crime in this. Man bears the fruits of his own deeds. Others become instruments in that. Then here my God has tested me by making him an instrument. Wanted to know whether I am interested in name or I am just pretending. I was nothing, His grace kept me firm in chanting the name till the last breath of my consciousness. May God forgive them if they have committed any crime.’ Hearing the voice of the saint, everyone became very happy and shouted ‘Blessed’. Mulukpati and Gorai Kaji were also greatly influenced and they also became lovers of Naamkirtan and started chanting Harinam.
