विजयोन्मादके क्षणोंमें

मध्यकालीन यूरोपकी कथा है। अपने सेनापतिकी वीरतासे एक राजाने युद्धमें विजय प्राप्त की। उसने राजधानीमें सेनापतिका धूमधामसे स्वागत करनेका विचार किया।

‘सेनापतिके राजधानीमें प्रवेश करते ही उसका जय-जयकार किया जाय । चार श्वेत घोड़ोंसे जुते रथपर बैठकर वह युद्धस्थलसे राजमहलतक आये और उसके
रथके पीछे-पीछे युद्धबंदी दौड़ते रहें तथा उनके हाथमें हथकड़ी और पैरोंमें बेड़ी हों।’ राजाने स्वागतकी योजनापर प्रकाश डाला !

सेनापति बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ इस स्वागत-समाचारसे। | राजाकी स्वागत योजनाके अनुसार सेनापतिने चार सफेद घोड़ोंके रथपर आसीन होकर नगरमें प्रवेश किया। उसकी जयध्वनिसे धरती और आकाश पूर्ण थे। सेनापतिने प्रत्यक्ष-सा देखा कि एक सुन्दर सजे सजाये रथमें एक दास बैठा हुआ था और उसके रथने सेनापतिके रथके समानान्तर ही राजधानीमें प्रवेश किया। इससे उसे यह संकेत मिला कि छोटे-से-छोटा साधारण दास भी उसके समान गौरवपूर्ण पद पा सकता है। इसलिये नश्वर संसारके थोड़ेसे भागपर विजय करके प्रमत्त नहीं होना चाहिये। यह क्षणभङ्गुर है; इसमें आसक्त नहीं रहना चाहिये।

जिस समय लोग उसका जयकार कर रहे थे, उस समय सेनापतिको लगा कि एक दास उसे घूँसा मार रहा है। सेनापति दासके इस व्यवहारसे बड़ा क्षुब्ध था; उसका विजय-मद उतर गया। उसका अभिमान नष्ट होगया। दासका यह कार्य संकेत कर रहा था कि मिथ्या अभिमान वास्तविक उन्नतिमें बाधक है।

सबसे आश्चर्यकी बात तो यह थी कि जिस समय धूम-धामसे उसका स्वागत होना चाहिये था उस समय लोग जोर-जोरसे उसकी निन्दा कर रहे थे। अनेक प्रकारकी गाली दे रहे थे। इससे उसे अपने दोषोंका ज्ञान होने लगा और अपनी सच्ची स्थितिका पता चल गया। उसे ज्ञान हो गया कि मनुष्यको विजय पाकर उन्मत्त नहीं होना चाहिये। सब प्राणी गौरव प्राप्त करनेके अधिकारी हैं तथा अपने दोष ही सबसे बड़े शत्रु हैं; उन्हें दूर करनेका प्रयत्न करना चाहिये। इससे जीवनमें सत्यका प्रकाश उतरता है।
