मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम श्रीरघुनाथजीको पता लगा कि उनके परम भक्त विभीषणको कहीं ब्राह्मणोंने बाँध लिया है। श्रीराघवेन्द्रने चारों ओर दूत भेजे, पता लगाया और अन्तमें स्वयं वहाँ पहुँचे, जहाँ ब्राह्मणोंने विभीषणको दृढ़ शृङ्खलाओंसे बाँधकर एक भूगर्भगृहमें बंदी बना रखा था।
मर्यादा-पुरुषोत्तमको कुछ पूछना नहीं पड़ा। ब्राह्मणोंने प्रभुका स्वागत किया, उनका आतिथ्य किया और कहा – ‘महाराज ! इस वनमें हमारे आश्रमके पास एक राक्षस रथमें बैठकर आया था। हममेंसे एक अत्यन्त वृद्ध मौनव्रती वनमें कुश लेने गये थे। राक्षसने उनसे कुछ पूछा, किंतु मौनव्रती होनेसे वे उत्तर नहीं दे सके।दुष्ट राक्षसने उनके ऊपर पाद-प्रहार किया। वे वृद्ध तो थे ही, गिर पड़े और मर गये। हमलोगोंको समाचार मिला। हमने उस दुष्ट राक्षसको पकड़ लिया, किंतु हमारे द्वारा बहुत पीटे जानेपर भी वह मरता नहीं है। आप यहाँ आ गये हैं, यह सौभाग्यकी बात है। उस दुष्ट हत्यारेको आप दण्ड दीजिये।’
ब्राह्मण विभीषणको उसी दशामें ले आये। विभीषणका | मस्तक लज्जासे झुका था; किंतु श्रीराम तो और भी संकुचित हो गये। उन्होंने ब्राह्मणोंसे कहा- ‘किसीका सेवक कोई अपराध करे तो वह अपराध स्वामीका ही माना जाता है। आपलोग इनको छोड़ दें। मैंने इन्हें कल्पपर्यन्त जीवित रहनेका वरदान तथा लङ्काका राज्यदिया है। ये मेरे अपने हैं, अतः इनका अपराध तो मेरा ही अपराध है। आपलोग जो दण्ड देना चाहें, मैं उसे स्वीकार करूँगा।’
विभीषणजीने जान-बूझकर ब्रह्महत्या नहीं की थी। वे वृद्ध ब्राह्मण हैं और मौनव्रती हैं, यह विभीषणको पतानहीं था । उनको मार डालनेकी तो विभीषणकी इच्छा थी ही नहीं। अतः अनजानमें हुई हत्याका प्रायश्चित्त ही ऋषियोंने बताया और वह प्रायश्चित्त विभीषणने नहीं, श्री राघवेन्द्रने स्वयं किया।
Maryada Purushottam Shri Raghunathji came to know that his supreme devotee Vibhishan has been tied somewhere by Brahmins. Shri Raghavendra sent messengers all around, found out and finally reached there himself, where the Brahmins had tied Vibhishana with strong chains and kept him captive in a underground house.
Maryada-Purushottam did not have to ask anything. Brahmins welcomed the Lord, hosted him and said – ‘ Maharaj! A demon came sitting in a chariot near our ashram in this forest. One of us, a very old man who had remained silent, had gone to the forest to collect kush. The demon asked him something, but being silent he could not answer. The evil demon stomped on him. He was old after all, fell down and died. We got the news. We caught that evil demon, but he does not die even after being beaten a lot by us. It is a matter of good fortune that you have come here. You punish that evil murderer.’
Brahmins brought Vibhishan in the same condition. Vibhishanka | The head was bowed down in shame; But Shriram became even more narrow. He said to the Brahmins- ‘If someone’s servant commits a crime, then that crime is considered to be the master’s. You leave them. I have given him the boon of living till the end of the cycle and the kingdom of Lanka. They are my own, so their crime is my crime. Whatever punishment you want to give, I will accept it.
Vibhishanji did not commit brahmahatya intentionally. Vibhishan did not know that he is an old Brahmin and observes silence. Vibhishan had no desire to kill him. Therefore, the rishis told the atonement for the unknowingly killing and that atonement was not done by Vibhishan, but by Shri Raghavendra himself.
