अछूत कौन ?

एक बार प्रेम-भूमि श्रीवृन्दावनमें यमुनाजीके पवित्र तटपर कुछ साधु बैठे हुए थे। उनकी धूनी जल रही थी और वे भण्डारेको चर्चामें मग्न हो रहे थे। उसी समय एक अछूत वहाँ आया और साधुओंके सामनेवाले घाटपर स्नान करने लगा। साधुओंसे यह बात सहन न हुई। एकने उठकर जलती हुई लकड़ीसे उसपर प्रहार किया और बुरा-भला कहने लगा। अछूत कुछ बोला नहीं। यद्यपि वह एक बार स्नान कर चुका था, फिर भी वह वहाँसे थोड़ी दूर हटकर दुबारा स्नान करने लगा। उसका यह काम देखकर साधुओंके मुखियाको कुछ आश्चर्य हुआ। उन्होंने जाकर पूछा तो उसने कहा-‘महाराज! मैं शरीरसे तो अछूत हूँ ही, आप लोगोंके घाटपर स्नान करके मैंने अपराध भी किया, किंतु मैं अपने मनको अछूतपनसे अलग रखता हूँ। जिस साधुने मुझे मारा, वह क्रोधावेशमें था, इसलिये उसका मन अछूत हो गया था। उसके अछूत मनका असर मेरे मनपर न पड़ जाय, इसलिये मैंने दुबारा स्नान किया है; क्योंकि क्रोध भी तो एक अछूत ही है न?’ साधुओंके मुखिया अवाक् रह गये, अपने अन्तर्जीवनपर वह इतनी पैनी दृष्टि रखता है, यह जानकर उनकी उसपर बड़ी श्रद्धा हुई। [स्वामी श्रीअखण्डानन्दजी सरस्वती ]

Who are the untouchables?
Once upon a time some sages were sitting on the holy banks of Yamunaji in Sri Vrindavan, the land of love. His dhuni was burning and he was engrossed in the discussion of Bhandara. At the same time an untouchable came there and started bathing at the ghat in front of the sadhus. The sadhus could not tolerate this. One got up and hit him with burning wood and started abusing him. The untouchable didn’t say anything. Although he had taken bath once, he went a little far away from there and started taking bath again. Seeing this act of his, the head of the sadhus was somewhat surprised. When he went and asked, he said – ‘ Maharaj! I am physically untouchable, I committed a crime by bathing at your ghats, but I keep my mind separate from untouchability. The sadhu who killed me was in a fit of rage, so his mind had become untouchable. I have taken bath again so that his untouchable mind may not affect my mind; Because even anger is an untouchable, isn’t it?’ The chiefs of the sadhus were speechless, knowing that he keeps such a keen eye on their inner life, they had great faith in him.
