अहंकार
किसी समयकी बात है, रामनगरमें एक वृद्ध भिखारी रहता था। वह सड़कके किनारे बैठकर भीख माँगता था। उसका स्थान स्थायी था। आते-जाते कोई उसे कुछ दे देता था तो वह खा लेता था, नहीं मिलता तो भूखे रहना पड़ता। उसके शरीरपर कई जगह घाव भी हो गये थे, जहाँसे खून भी टपकता रहता था।
एक युवक प्रतिदिन उस सड़कसे गुजरता था, उसे देखता था। एक दिन वह उसके पास गया और बोला ‘बाबा! तुम्हारी ऐसी हालत हो गयी है, फिर भी तुम जीना चाहते हो। तुम किसके लिये भीख माँगते हो ? तुम भगवान्से यह प्रार्थना क्यों नहीं करते कि या तो तुम्हें ठीक कर दे या फिर इस जीवनसे मुक्तकर अपने पास बुला ले ?’
भिखारी बोला-‘बेटा! तुमने ठीक कहा, मैं भी ऐसा ही सोचता हूँ और प्रार्थना करता हूँ, पर भगवान् मेरी विनती नहीं सुनना चाहता है। शायद उसकी इच्छा है कि लोग मुझे देखें, देखकर सबक लें और समझें कि मैं भी कभी उनके समान ही था। उनके लिये भी ऐसा समय आ सकता है। वे भी मेरी ही तरह हो सकते हैं। इसलिये आदमीको कभी अहंकार नहीं करना चाहिये। भगवान् ने मुझे उदाहरणके रूपमें जीवित रखा है।’
युवक भिखारीके आगे नतमस्तक हो गया। उसने कहा-‘ आपने मुझे जीवनके सचसे अवगत कराया है। मैं उसके लिये सदैव आपका ऋणी रहूँगा। आपकी बातको सदैव याद रखूँगा।’
Ego
Once upon a time, an old beggar lived in Ramnagar. He used to beg by sitting on the side of the road. His position was permanent. If someone used to give him something on the way, he used to eat it, otherwise he would have to starve. There were wounds on his body at many places, from where blood kept dripping.
A young man used to pass by that road every day, used to see it. One day he went to him and said ‘Baba! You have become like this, yet you want to live. for whom do you beg? Why don’t you pray to God to either heal you or free you from this life and call you to yourself?’
The beggar said – ‘Son! You are right, I also think and pray like this, but God does not want to listen to my request. Perhaps he wishes that people should see me, take a lesson by watching and understand that I too was once like them. Such a time may come for them too. They too can be like me. That’s why a man should never be arrogant. God has kept me alive as an example.’
The young man bowed down before the beggar. He said-‘ You have made me aware of the truth of life. I will always be indebted to you for that. I will always remember your words.
