एक दिन एक घमंडी युवकने इंगलैंडकी महारानी एलिजाबेथके आदरभाजन तथा प्रख्यात शूर सर वॉल्टर रैलेको द्वन्द्वयुद्धकी चुनौती दी। उस समय यूरोपमें द्वन्द्व-युद्धकी चुनौतीको अस्वीकार करना अत्यन्त कायरताका चिह्न माना जाता था। सर रैले तलवार चलानेमें अत्यन्त निपुण थे; किंतु उन्होंने उस युवककी चुनौती अस्वीकार कर दी। इससे उसअसभ्य युवकने घृणापूर्वक सर रैलेके मुखपर थूक दिया ।

बिना किसी उत्तेजनाके रैले बोले-‘जितनी सरलतासे अपने मुखपर पड़े इस थूकको मेँ रूमाल निकालकर पोंछ सकता हूँ, यदि उतनी ही सरलतासे मानवहत्याका पाप भी पोंछा जा सकता तो अवश्य मेँ तलवार निकालकर तुम्हारे साथ भिड़ पड़ता ।’
