सन्त ज्ञानेश्वर और सन्त नामदेव महाराज तीर्थ यात्रा करते-करते हस्तिनापुर (दिल्ली) पहुँचे। सन्तों के आने से दिल्ली में नामदेव के कीर्तन की धूम मच गयी। हजारों की संख्या में लोग जुटते और कीर्तन सुनकर आनन्दमग्न हो जाते।
यह बात बादशाह के कानों तक पहुँची। नामदेव के कीर्तन की प्रचण्ड ध्वनि से दिल्ली की गली-गली गूँजती देख उसके क्रोध का पारावार न रहा। एक दिन रात में सोता हुआ वह इस प्रचण्ड कोलाहल से जाग उठा। तत्काल घोड़े पर सवार हो वह कीर्तन-स्थल पर पहुँचा। उसने आँखों देखा कि लाखों की भीड़ वहाँ जुटी है। बादशाह लौट आया। उसने इस काफिर नामदेव को खूब मजा चखाने का निश्चय किया। सोचा–हिन्दू गाय की कुर्बानी से ठिकाने आते हैं। अत: ठीक कीर्तन के समय उसी के सामने यह किया जाय और नामदेव की सन्तई देखी जाय।
दूसरे दिन कीर्तन के समय उसी के सामने बादशाह ने अपने हाथों गोहत्या करके नामदेव से कहा–’यदि तुम सच्चे फकीर हो तो इसे जिलाओ; तभी हिन्दू धर्म पर तुम्हारा प्रेम माना जायगा। नहीं जिला सकोगे तो इसे ढोंग मानकर तुम्हारा भी सिर उड़ा दूँगा।’
गोहत्या से नामदेव का हृदय तार-तार हो गया। वे भगवान् को मनाने लगे–’प्रभो! जल्दी आओ और सनातन धर्म की तथा इस देवता की रक्षा करो
नामदेव की आँखों से आँसुओं की धारा बह चली। गोमाताका सिर गोद में लेकर वे बड़ी ही करुणा से भगवान् की गुहार करने लगे।
शोक करते-करते नामदेव को मूर्छा आ गयी और वे संज्ञाहीन हो गिर पड़े। उनके प्रिय परमात्मा को दया आयी। वे वहाँ प्रकट हुए और नामदेव को जगाने लगे–’नामा! उठो, प्यारी गाय की रक्षा के निमित्त प्राण देने वाले तुम धन्य हो मैं तुम्हारे सहायतार्थ आ गया हूँ। देखो, गाय तुम्हें चाट रही है, उठो।’
नामदेव पुनः संज्ञायुक्त हुए। उन्होंने आँखें खोलीं। सचमुच गाय उन्हें चाट रही थी। बादशाह ने नामदेव के चरणों पर सिर धरकर क्षमा माँगी।
Saint Dnyaneshwar and Saint Namdev Maharaj reached Hastinapur (Delhi) while on pilgrimage. With the arrival of the saints, the kirtan of Namdev became famous in Delhi. Thousands of people would gather and become ecstatic after listening to the kirtan. This news reached the king’s ears. Seeing the streets of Delhi echoing with the loud sound of Namdev’s kirtan, his anger knew no bounds. One day, while sleeping at night, he woke up due to this tremendous noise. He immediately rode the horse and reached the place of Kirtan. He saw with his own eyes that a crowd of lakhs had gathered there. The king returned. He decided to give a lot of fun to this infidel Namdev. Thought- Hindus come to their destination by sacrificing cow. Therefore, right at the time of Kirtan, this should be done in front of him and Namdev’s children should be seen. The next day, at the time of Kirtan, the king killed the cow with his own hands and said to Namdev – ‘If you are a true fakir, then bring it back to life; Only then will your love for Hindu religion be considered. If you can’t revive me, I will take it as a pretense and blow your head off too.’ Namdev’s heart was torn apart by cow slaughter. They started persuading God – ‘Lord! Come quickly and protect Sanatan Dharma and this god. A stream of tears flowed from Namdev’s eyes. Taking the cow’s head in his lap, he started praying to God with great compassion. While mourning, Namdev fainted and fell unconscious. His beloved God took pity. He appeared there and started waking up Namdev – ‘Nama! Get up, you are blessed to have given your life to protect the beloved cow, I have come to help you. Look, the cow is licking you, get up. Namdev again became a noun. He opened his eyes. Literally the cow was licking them. The king bowed his head at the feet of Namdev and asked for forgiveness.
