नीलाचल में सनातन जी
वृन्दावनात् पुन: प्राप्तं श्रीगौर: श्रीसनातनम्।
देहपातादवन् स्नेहाच्छुद्धं चक्रे परीक्षया।।
श्री रूप तो सम्पत्ति की व्यवस्था करने के निमित्त गौड़ देश में ठहरे हुए हैं, अब इनके भाई श्री सनातन जी का समाचार सुनिये। सनात जी ने ‘मथुरामाहात्म्य’ हस्तगत करके उसी के अनुसार व्रजमण्डल के समस्त तीर्थो की यात्रा की। यात्रा के अनन्तर उन्हें अपने भाई से भेंट करने तथा प्रभु के दर्शनों की इच्छा हुई। अपने भाइयों का समाचार जानने के लिये वे व्रज से नीलाचल की ओर चल पड़े। गौड़ तो उन्हें जाना ही नहीं था, क्योंकि ये जेलर को इस बात का वचन दे आये थे। अत: प्रयाग से काशी होते हुए झाड़ीखण्ड के विकट रास्ते से ये जंगल के कण्टकाकीर्ण भयंकर पंथ के ही पथिक बने। रास्ते में जंगल की झाड़ियों की विषैली वायु लगने से इनके सम्पूर्ण अंग में भंयकर खुजली हो गयी। खुजली पक भी गयी और उससे पीब बहने लगा। जैसे-तैसे ये पुरी में पहुँचे। पुर में ये कहाँ ठहरें? पहले कभी आये नहीं थे। इतना उन्होंने सुन रखा था कि प्रभु कहीं मन्दिर के ही समीप में रहते हैं, किन्तु यवनों के संसर्गी होने के कारण ये अपने को मन्दिर के समीप जाने का अधिकारी ही नहीं समझते थे, इसलिये ये महात्मा हरिदास जी का स्थान पूछते-पूछते वहाँ पहुँचे।
हरिदास जी इन्हें देखते ही खिल उठे इनकी यथो योग्य अभ्यर्चना की। सनातन प्रभु के दर्शनों के लिये बड़े उत्सुक हो रहे थे किन्तु मन्दिर के समीप न जाने के लिये विवश थे, तब हरिदास जी ने इन्हें धैर्य बंधाते हुए कहा- ‘आप घबड़ाइये नहीं, प्रभु यहाँ नित्य प्रति आते हैं, वे अभी आते ही होंगे।’ इतने में ही दोनों ने श्री हरि के मधुर नामो का संकीर्तन करते हुए प्रभु को दूर से आते हुए देखा। प्रभु को देखते ही एक ओर हटकर श्री सनातन जी भूमि पर लोटकर साष्टांग प्रणाम करने लगे। हरिदास जी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो! सनातन साष्टांग कर रहे हैं।’ ‘सनातन यहाँ कहां।’ इतना कहते हुए प्रभु जल्दी से सनातन का आलिंगन करने के लिये दौडे़। प्रभु को अपनी ओर आते देखकर सनातन जी जल्दी से उठकर एक ओर दौडे़ और कातर स्वर से कहते जाते थे- ‘प्रभो मैं नीच एक तो वैसे ही अधम, नीच और यवन-संसर्गी था, तिस पर भी मेरे सम्पूर्ण शरीर में खाज हो रही है। आप मेरा स्पर्श न करें।’ किन्तु प्रभु कब सुनने वाले थे। जल्दी से दौड़कर उन्होंने बलपूर्वक सनातन जी को पकड़ लिया और उनका गाढ़ालिंगन करते हुए वे कहने लगे- ‘आज हम कृतार्थ हो गये। सनातन के शरीर की सुन्दर सुगन्धित को सूंघकर हमारे लोक-परलोक दोनों ही सुधर गये।’
‘सचमुच प्रभु ने सनातन जी के दिव्य शरीर में की खाज मे से एक प्रकार की दिव्य सुगन्धित का अनुभव किया। सनातन जी संकोच के कारण किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ हो ये। महाप्रभु की अपार अनुकम्पा के भार से दबे हुए वे विवश होकर पृथ्वी की ओर दखने लगे। महाप्रभु की अहैतु की कृपा के स्मरण से उनका हृदय पिघल रहा था और वह पानी बन-बनकर आँखों के द्वारा निकल कर प्रभु के काषाय रंग वाले वस्त्रों को भिगो रहा था।
थोड़ी देर के अनन्तर प्रभु वहीं एक आसन पर बैठ गये। नीचे सिर किये हुए भूमि पर सनातन जी और हरिदास जी बैठ गये। प्रभु ने धीरे-धीरे रूप के आने का और उनके मिलने आदि का सभी वृत्तान्त सुना दिया। इसी प्रसंग में प्रभु ने श्री अनूप के परलोकगमन का समाचार भी सुना दिया। भाई के वैकुण्ठवास का समाचार सुनकर वीतराग महात्मा सनातन जी का भी हृदय उमड़ आया। वे अपने अश्रुओं के प्रवाह को रोक नहीं सके। प्रभु के कमल मुख पर भी विषण्णता के भाव प्रतीत होने लगे।
प्रभु ने धीरे-धीरे भर्राई हुई आवाज से कहा- ‘सनातन! तुम्हारे भाई ने सदगति पायी। वे परम भागवत पुरुषों के लोक में परमानन्द-सुख का अनुभव करते होंगे, उनसे बढ़कर सौभाग्यशाली हो ही कौन सकता है, जिन्होंने देहत्याग के पूर्व अपना घरबार त्याग दिया, व्रजमण्डल के सभी तीर्थो की यथाविधि यात्रा की और अन्तिम समय में अपने परम भागवत गुरु स्वरूप जयेष्ठ भ्राता श्री रूपजी की गोद में सिर रखकर भगवती भागीरथी के रम्य तट पर इस नश्वर शरीर को त्याग दिया और वैकुण्ठवासी बन गये, उन महाभाग के निमित्त तुम्हें शोक नहीं करना चाहिये। ऐसी मृत्यु के लिये तो इन्द्रादि देवता भी तरसते हैं।’
रूंधे हुए कण्ठ से आंसू पोंछते हुए श्री सनातनजी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो! मैं उन महाभाग के शरीर के लिये रुदन नहीं कर रहा हूँ। वे तो नित्य हैं, शाश्वत धाम में जाकर अपने इष्टदेव श्री सीता-राम जी के चरणाश्रित बन गये होंगे, किन्तु मुझे इसी बात का सोच हो रहा है कि अन्तिम समय मैं उनके दर्शन नहीं कर सका। मैं अभागा उनके निधन काल के दर्शनों से वंचित ही रहा।’
प्रभु ने करूण स्वर में कहा-‘ रूप कहते थे, उनकी निष्ठा अलौकिक थी, अन्तिम समय में उन्होंने श्री सीताराम जी का ध्यान और स्मरण करते हुए प्रसन्नता पूर्वक ही शरीर त्याग किया।’
सनातन जी ने पश्चात्ताप के स्वर में कहा- प्रभो! मैं उनकी निष्ठा आपके सम्मुख क्या बताऊँ। कहने को तो वे हमारे छोटे भाई थे, किन्तु निष्ठा में वे हम दोनों से बढ़कर थे। उनकी-जैसी निष्ठा मैनें आज तक किसी में भी नहीं देखी। हमारी तो निष्ठा ही क्या, उनके सामने हमारी निष्ठा तो नहीं के ही समान है। वे सदा हमारे साथ रहते और तीनों ही मिलकर श्रीमद्भागवत की कथा सुना करते। उनके इष्टदेव श्री सीता-राम जी थे। हम दोनों ने एक दिन परीक्षा से निमित्त उनसे कहा- ‘अनूप! तुम स्वयं समझदार हो, श्री रामचन्द्र जी की लीलाओं की अपेक्षा श्री कृष्णचन्द्र जी की लीलाओं में अधिक माधुर्य है, इसलिये तुम श्री कृष्ण को ही अपना उपास्यदेव क्यों नहीं बना लेते। इससे तीनों ही भाई श्री कृष्णोपासक होकर साथ-ही-साथ उपसना-भजन और कीर्तन किया करेंगे।’ वे हम दोनों का अत्यधिक आदर करते थे; हमारी बात को उन्होंने कभी नहीं टाला। हमारे ऐसे कथन को उन्होंने स्वीकार कर लिया और कहा- ‘आप दोनों भाई ही मेरे गुरु, माता-पिता तथा शिक्षक हैं। आप जैसा कहेंगे वैसा ही करुँगा। कल मुझे कृष्णमन्त्र की ही दीक्षा दे देना। ‘इतना कहकर वे सोने चले गये। हमने देखा, वे रात्रि भर हाय-हाय करते रहे, एक क्षण को भी नहीं सोये। प्रात: काल उन्होंने आकर हमसे कहा- ‘भाइयो! मैं क्या करूँ, यह सिर तो मैं श्री सीताराम जी के में चढ़ा चुका। रात्रि को मैंने बहुत चेष्टा की कि उस चढ़ाये हुए सिर को फिर से लौटा लूँ, किन्तु मेरी हिम्मत नही पड़ी। मैं इस शरीर को प्रसन्नता पूर्वक त्याग सकता हूँ, किन्तु मुझसे श्री सीताराम जी की उपासना न छोड़ी जायगी।’ उनकी ऐसी ऐकान्तिक निष्ठा को देखकर हमें परम आश्चर्य हुआ और अपनी निष्ठा को बार-बार धिक्कार ने लगे। सो, प्रभो! वे मेरे भाई सचमुच ही अनूप थे, उनकी उपमा किसी से दी ही नहीं जा सकती।’
प्रभु ने कहा- ‘यथार्थ निष्ठा तो इसी का नाम है। ठीक इसी प्रकार मैंने श्री रामोपासक मुरारी गुप्त से भी यही बात कही थी और उन्होंने भी यही उत्तर दिया था। सेव्य- सेवक का भाव इसी प्रकार ऐकान्तिक और दृढ़ होना चाहिये, जो किसी प्रकार के भी प्रलोभन आने पर हिल न सके। तभी प्रभु प्रेम की प्राप्ति हो सकती है।’ इस प्रकार प्रभु बहुत देर तक श्री सनातन जी से बातें करते रहे। अन्त में उन्हें वहीं हरिदास जी के ही समीप रहने का आदेश देकर आप अपने स्थान के लिये चले गये और गोविन्द के हाथों दोनों के ही लिये श्री जगन्नाथ जी का महाप्रसाद भिजवाया। इस प्रकार सनातन जी पुरी में ही हरिदास जी के समीप रहने लगे। प्रभु नियमित रूप से इन दोनों को देखने के लिये आया करते थे।
श्री सनातन जी लगभग चैत्रमास में पुरी पधारे थे। वे भीतर मन्दिर में दर्शनों के लिये न जाकर दूर से ही मन्दिर की पताका को प्रणाम कर लेते थे। शरीर का भोग अच्छे-अच्छे महापुरुषों को भी भोगना पड़ता है, सनातन जी की भंयकर खाज अभी अच्छी नहीं हुई। खुजाते-खुजाते उनके सम्पूर्ण शरीर में बड़-बड़े घाव हो गये और उनमें से निरन्तर पीब बहता रहता था।
ज्येष्ठ का महीना था। प्रभु पुरी से चार-पांच मील की दूरी पर यमेश्वर टोटा में गये हुए थे। बाहर बजे उन्होंने सनातन को भी भिक्षा के लिये वहीं बुलाया। यमेश्वर जाने के लिये दो मार्ग थे- एक तो सिंहद्वार होकर सीधे सड़क-सड़क जाना होता है, दूसरे समुद्र के किनारे-किनारे भी यमेश्वर जा सकते हैं। ज्येष्ठ की प्रखर धूप के कारण समुद्र-किनारे की बालू जल रही थी। यदि उसमें कच्चा चना डाल दिया जाय तो क्षणभर में भुनकर खिल जाये। उस बालू में मनुष्य की तो बात ही क्या, बारह बजे पशु भी जाने में हिचकता हैं, किन्तु जब सनातन जी ने सुना कि प्रभु ने मुझे बुलाया है, तब तो ये अपने भाग्य की सराहना करते हुए उसी बालुकामय पथ से नंगे पैरों ही प्रभु के समीप पहुँचे। शरीर को सर्दी-गर्मी का सुख-दु:ख व्यपता ही है। सनातन जी के पैरों में बड़े-बड़े छाले पड़ गये। प्रभु ने उन्हें देखते ही पूछा- ‘अरे! तुम इतनी धूप में किधर होकर आये हो?’
सरलता के साथ सनातन जी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो! समुद्र तट के रास्ते से ही आया हूँ।’
प्रभु ने उनके पैरों के छालों को देखते हुए कहा- ‘देखे, नंगे पैरों तप्त बालू में आने से तुम्हारे पैरों में छाले पड़ गये। तुम सिंहद्वार के रास्ते होकर क्यों नहीं आये?’
सनातन जी ने दीनता के साथ कहा- प्रभो! सिंहद्वार होकर श्री जगन्नाथ जी के सेवक तथा दर्शनार्थी आते-जाते रहते है, उनसे कहीं भूल में स्पर्श हो जाय तो मैं ही पाप का भागी बनूँगा। इसी भय से मैं सिंहद्वार होकर नहीं आया।’
प्रभु इनकी ऐसी मर्यादा, दीनता और सरलता को देखकर मन-ही-मन बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उनका जोरों से गाढ़ालिंगन करते हुए कहने लगे- ‘सनातन! तुम धन्य हो, तुम्हीं वैष्णवता के सच्चे रहस्य को समझे हो। यद्यपि तुम्हारे लिये स्वयं कोई विधि-निषेध नहीं है, फिर भी तुम लोक मर्यादा के निमित्त ऐसा व्यवहार करते हो, यह सर्वश्रेष्ठ है। मुनष्य चाहे कितनी भी उन्नति क्यों न कर ले फिर भी उसे मर्यादा का उल्लंघन न करना चाहिये। क्योंकि मर्यादा भंग करने से लोकनिन्दा होती है और लोकनिन्दा से सदा पतन का भय बना रहता है।’ सनातन के आलिंगन से प्रभु के सुवर्ण के समान सुन्दर शरीर में कई जगह पीब लग गया, इससे सनातन जी को अपार दु:ख हुआ, वे सोचने लगे ‘क्या करूं, प्रभु तो मेरा आलिंगन बिना किये मानते ही नहीं! इसीलिये अब इस भंयकर शरीर को रखकर क्या करूंगा। प्रभु के दर्शन तो हो ही गये। रथ यात्रा के दिन जगन्नाथ जी के दर्शन और करके उन्हीं के रथ के नीचे पिचकर मर जाऊंगा!’
महाप्रभु इनके मनोभाव को समझ गये। वे एक दिन भक्तों के सहित आकर सनातन जी से बातें करने लगे।
उन्होंने बातों-ही बातों में कहा- ‘सनातन! शरीर त्याग ने से तुमने क्या लाभ सोचा है? मनुष्य का अन्तिम पुरुषार्थ प्रभु प्राप्ति है, यदि शरीर त्याग ने से प्रभु प्राप्ति हो सके, तो मैं तो हजारों बार शरीर धारण करके उन्हें त्याग ने को तैयार हूँ। इस प्रकार शरीर त्यागना तामसी प्रवृति है। जो संसारी तापों से खिन्न होकर किसी कारण से शरीर से ऊबकर प्राण त्याग देते हैं, उनकी सदगति नहीं होती। उन्हें फिर कर्मों के भोग के निमित्त आसुरी प्रकृति के शरीर धारण करने होते हैं। शरीर का सदप्रयोग श्रीकृष्ण संकीर्तन करने में ही है। यदि आसुरी प्रकृति के शरीर धारण करने होते हैं। शरीर का सदुपयोग श्री कृष्ण संकीर्तन करने में ही है। यदि भगवन्नामचिन्तन और स्मरण बना रहता है तो फिर शरीर कैसी भी दशा में रहे, विवेकी पुरुषो को शरीर की कुछ भी परवा न करनी चाहिये।’
प्रभु की बात सुनकर नीचा सिर किये हुए सनातन जी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो! इस बेकार और अपवित्र शरीर को रखवाकर आप इससे क्या कराना चाहते हैं? इससे तो अब दूसरों को दु:ख के सिवा किसी प्रकार का लाभ नहीं पहुँचता।’
प्रभु ने कहा- ‘तुम्हें हानि-लाभ से क्या? तुम तो अपने शरीर को मुझे सौंप चुके। दान की हुई वस्तु को लौटाकर कोई उसका मनमाना उपयोग कर सकता है? तुम्हारे जाने मैं इसका कुछ भी उपयोग करूँ, तुम्हें इसे नष्ट करने का अधिकार नहीं है। इससे मुझे बड़े -बड़े काम कराने हैं।’
सनातन जी ने धीरे से कहा- ‘प्रभो! आपकी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन करने की शक्ति ही किसमें है? जैसी आप आज्ञा करेंगे, वही मैं करूँगा। इस प्रकार सनातन जी को समझा-बुझाकर प्रभु भक्तों के सहित स्थान के लिये चले गये।
सनातन जी ने आत्मघात का विचार तो परित्याग कर दिया, किन्तु प्रभु के आलिंगन करने के कारण उन्हें सदा सकोंच बना रहता। वे सदा प्रभु से बचे ही रहते किन्तु प्रभु उन्हें खोजकर आलिंगन करते। इससे वे सदा व्यथित-से बने रहते। एक दिन उन्होंने अपनी मनोव्यथा पुरी में ही प्रभु के समीप निवास करने वाले जगदानन्द पण्डित से कही।
जगदानन्द जी ने कहा- ‘आपका पुरी में ही रहना ठीक नहीं है। आषाढ़ में रथ यात्रा के दर्शन करके यहाँ से सीधे वृन्दावन चले जाइये। आपके लिये प्रभु ने वही देश दिया है, उस प्रभुदत्त देश में जाकर भगवन्नाम-जप करते हुए समय व्यतीत कीजिये।’
सनातन जी ने प्रसन्नता प्रकट करते हुए कहा- ‘पण्डित जी! आपने यह बड़ी ही उत्तम सम्मति दी। आषाढ़ के पश्चात मैं यहाँ से अवश्य ही चला जाऊँगा।’ ऐसा निश्चय करके वे रथ यात्रा की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। एक दिन बातों-ही-बातों में उन्होंने प्रभु से कहा- ‘प्रभो! मुझे पण्डित जगदानन्द जी ने बड़ी सुन्दर सम्मति दी है। रथ यात्रा करके मैं वृन्दावन चला जाऊँगा और वहीं रहूँगा। ‘प्रभु जगदानन्द के ऐसे भाव को समझकर उनके ऊपर प्रेम का क्रोध प्रकट करते हुए कहने लगे- जगदानन्द अपने को अब बड़ा भारी पण्डित समझने लगा, जो सनातन जी को भी शिक्षा देने लगा। हमें शिक्षा दे तो ठीक भी है, सनातन जी तो अभी इसे सैकड़ों वर्षों तक पढ़ा सकते हैं। मूर्ख कहीं का, कलका छोकड़ा होकर इतने बड़े लोगों को सम्मति देने चला है।’
इस बात को सुनकर जगदानन्द जी तो सन्न पड़ गये, काटो तो शरीर में रक्त नहीं! वे डबडबायी आँखों से पृथ्वी की ओर देखने लगे। तब सनातन जी ने अत्यन्त ही विनम्र भाव से प्रभु के पैर पकड़े हुए कहा- ‘प्रभो! जगदानन्द जी ने तो मेरे हितकी ही बात कही है। आप मुझ पतित को स्पर्श करते हैं, इस बात से किसे दु:ख न होगा? मैं स्वयं संकुचित बना रहता हूँ।
प्रभु ने फिर उसी स्वर में कहा- ‘इसे मेरे शरीर की इतनी चिन्ता क्यों? यह शरीर ही सब कुछ समझता है। इसे वैष्णवों के माहात्म्य का पता नहीं। सनातन जी के शरीर को यह अन्य साधारण लोगों के शरीर के समान समझता है। इसे पता नहीं, सनातन जी का शरीर चिन्मय है। उसे खुजली और कुष्ठ कहाँ? यह तो उन्होंने मेरे प्रेम की परीक्षा के निमित्त अपने शरीर में उत्पन्न कर ली है कि मैं घृणा करके इनके शरीर को स्पर्श न करूँ। कोई भाग्यवान पुरुष सनातन जी के शरीर को सूँघे तो सही, उसमें से दिव्य सुगन्ध निकलती रहती है। मैं कुछ सनातन जी के ऊपर कृपा करने के निमित्त उनका आलिंगन थोड़े ही करता हूँ, मैं तो उनके शरीर-स्पर्श से अपने देह को पावन बनाता हूँ।’
प्रभु के मुख से अपनी इतनी भारी प्रशंसा सुनकर सनातन जी रोते-रोते कहने लगे- ‘प्रभो! मैंने ऐसा कौन-सा घोर अपराध किया है, मेरे किन जन्मों के अनन्त पाप आज आकर उदय हुए हैं, जो आप मुझे यह प्रशंसारूपी हलाहल विष पिला रहे हैं। जगदानन्द जी का आज भाग्य उदय हुआ। आज त्रिलोकी में इनसे बढ़कर भाग्यवान कौन होगा, जिनकी वात्सल्य स्नेह से पुत्र की भाँति प्रभु भर्त्सना कर रहे हैं। हाय ऐसी प्रेममयी भर्त्सना जिनके भाग्य में बदी है, वे महानुभाव धन्य हैं! गुरुजन जिनकी नित्य आलोचना करते रहते हैं, वे परम सौभाग्यशाली पुरुष हैं। हे करुणा के सागर प्रभो! इस अधम को किस अपराध से अपनेपन से पृथक करके आपने यह प्रशंसा रूपी सर्पिणी बलपूर्वक मेरे गले से लपेट दी। नाथ! मैं अब अधिक सहन न कर सकूँगा। ‘सनातन जी की ऐसी कातर वाणी सुनकर प्रभु कुछ लज्जित-से हो गये और अत्यन्त ही प्रेम के स्वर में जगदानन्द जी की ओर देखकर कहने लगे- ‘जगदानन्द ने मरे शरीर के स्नेह से और तुम्हारे आग्रह से ही ऐसी सम्मति दे दी होगी। मैंने अपने क्रोध के आवेश में ऐसी बातें इनके लिये कह दीं होगी। इसका कारण मेरा तुम्हारे ऊपर सहज स्नेह ही है। तुम इस वर्ष यहीं मेरे पास ही रहो, अगले वर्ष वृन्दावन जाना।’ इतना कहकर प्रभु ने सनातन जी का फिर जोरों से आलिंगन किया। बस, फिर क्या था! न जाने वह खुजली और उसकी पीड़ा कहाँ चली गयी! उसी समय उनकी खाज अच्छी हो गयी और दो-चार दिन में उनके घाव अच्छे होकर उनका शरीर सुवर्ण के समान कान्ति वाला बन गया।
रथ यात्रा के समय अद्वैताचार्य, नित्यानन्द आदि सभी गौड़ीय भक्त प्रतिवर्ष की भाँति अपने स्त्री-बच्चों के सहित पुरी में आये। प्रभु ने उन सबसे सनातन जी का परिचय कराया। सनातन जी प्रभु के परम कृपा पात्र इन सभी प्रेमी भक्तों का परिचय पाकर परम प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने सभी की चरणवन्दना की। सभी ने सनातन जी की श्रद्धा, दीनता और तितिक्षा की भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा की। बरसात के चार महीने रहकर सभी भक्त देश के लिये लौट गये, किन्तु सनातन जी वहीं रह गये। वे दूसरे वर्ष प्रभु से विदा होकर और उनकी आज्ञा शिरोधार्य करके पुरी से सीधे ही काशी होते हुए वृन्दावन पहुँचे। पुरी से चलते समय वे बलभद्र भट्टाचार्य से उस रास्ते के सभी स्थानों के नाम लिख ले गये थे, जिस रास्ते से प्रभु वृन्दावन गये थे, उन सभी स्थानों का दर्शन करते हुए और प्रभु की लीलाओं का स्मरण करते हुए उसी रास्ते से सनातन जी वृन्दावन पहुँचे। तब तक श्री रूप जी वृन्दावन में नहीं पहुचे थे। सनातन जी वहीं वृन्दावन वृक्षों के नीचे अपना समय बिताने लगे। कुछ दिनों के अनन्तर गौड़ देश से श्री रूप जी भी वृन्दावन पहुँच गये और दोनों भाई साथ ही श्री कृष्ण कथा कीर्तन करते हुए कालयापन करने लगे।

Mr. Roop is staying in Gaur country to make arrangements for property, now listen to the news of his brother Mr. Sanatan ji. Sanat ji took the ‘Mathuramahatmya’ in hand and accordingly traveled to all the pilgrimages of Vrajmandal. After the journey, he had a desire to meet his brother and have darshan of the Lord. To know the news of his brothers, he started from Vraj towards Neelachal. He didn’t want to go to Gaur, because he had given a promise to the jailer about this. Therefore, from Prayag to Kashi, through the difficult path of Jhari Khand, he became a wanderer of the thorny sect of the forest. Due to inhaling the poisonous air of the bushes of the forest on the way, his entire body became very itchy. The itching got ripe and pus started flowing from it. Somehow he reached Puri. Where to stay in Pur? They had never come here before. He had heard that the Lord resides somewhere near the temple, but being in the company of youths, he did not consider himself entitled to go near the temple, so he reached there inquiring about the location of Mahatma Haridas ji.
Haridas ji blossomed as soon as he saw him. He was getting very eager to have the darshan of Sanatan Prabhu, but was forced not to go near the temple, then Haridas ji gave him patience and said – ‘Don’t worry, Prabhu comes here regularly, He must be coming right now. ‘ Meanwhile, both of them saw the Lord coming from a distance while chanting the sweet names of Shri Hari. As soon as he saw the Lord, Shri Sanatan ji turned aside and started prostrated on the ground. Haridas ji said – ‘ Lord! Sanatan is prostrating. ‘Where is Sanatan here?’ Saying this, the Lord quickly ran to embrace Sanatan. Seeing the Lord coming towards him, Sanatan ji quickly got up and ran to one side and used to say in a shrill voice – ‘Lord, I was a lowly person, as low as I was, lowly and prone to yawning, yet my whole body is itching. . Don’t touch me.’ But when was the Lord going to listen. Running quickly, he caught hold of Sanatan ji by force and hugging him tightly, he said – ‘Today we have become grateful. Smelling the beautiful fragrance of Sanatan’s body, both our world and the hereafter improved.’
‘Truly the Lord experienced a kind of divine fragrance from the itch in the divine body of Sanatan ji. O Sanatanji, due to hesitation, he is confused in his duties. Overwhelmed by the immense mercy of Mahaprabhu, he was forced to look towards the earth. His heart was melting at the memory of Mahaprabhu’s causeless grace and he was soaking the Lord’s crimson colored clothes coming out like water.
After some time, the Lord sat there on a seat. Sanatan ji and Haridas ji sat on the ground with their heads down. The Lord slowly narrated the whole story of the arrival of the form and their meeting etc. In this context, the Lord also narrated the news of Shri Anoop’s passing away. Vitarag Mahatma Sanatan ji’s heart also swelled after hearing the news of brother’s Vaikunthavas. He could not stop the flow of his tears. Feelings of irritation started appearing on the lotus face of the Lord.
The Lord slowly said in a hoarse voice – ‘Eternal! Your brother has attained salvation. They must be experiencing ecstatic happiness in the world of supreme divine men, who can be more fortunate than them, who left their home before death, traveled to all the holy places of Vrajmandal and in the last moment, in the form of their supreme divine Guru. Putting your head in the lap of your elder brother Shri Rupji, you left this mortal body on the banks of Bhagirathi Bhagirathi and became a resident of Vaikunth, you should not grieve for that great fate. For such a death, even the Indriya gods yearn.’ Wiping the tears from his choked throat, Shri Sanatanji said – ‘Lord! I am not crying for the body of that Mahabhag. They are eternal, they must have become dependent on the feet of their presiding deities Shri Sita-Ram ji after going to the eternal abode, but I am thinking that I could not see them at the last moment. I was unlucky to be deprived of seeing his death.
The Lord said in a compassionate voice-‘ Roop used to say, his loyalty was supernatural, in the last moment he left his body happily while meditating and remembering Shri Sitaram ji.’
Sanatan ji said in the voice of repentance – Lord! What should I tell their loyalty in front of you. To say that he was our younger brother, but in loyalty he was greater than both of us. I have never seen loyalty like him in anyone till date. What to speak of our loyalty, our loyalty in front of them is almost non-existent. They would always be with us and all three together would narrate the story of Shrimad Bhagwat. His presiding deity was Shri Sita-Ram. One day both of us said to him for the purpose of examination – ‘Anoop! You yourself are sensible, there is more sweetness in Shri Krishnachandra ji’s pastimes than Shri Ramchandra ji’s pastimes, so why don’t you make Shri Krishna your worshiper. Due to this, all the three brothers, being worshipers of Shri Krishna, will perform Upasana-Bhajan and Kirtan simultaneously. He respected both of us very much; He never avoided our talk. He accepted our such statement and said- ‘You two brothers are my teachers, parents and teachers. I will do as you say. Tomorrow give me initiation of Krishna mantra only. Saying this he went to sleep. We saw, they kept on crying all night, did not sleep even for a moment. He came in the morning and said to us – ‘Brothers! What should I do? I tried a lot in the night to return that offered head again, but I did not have the courage. I can happily leave this body, but I will not leave the worship of Shri Sitaram ji.’ We were extremely surprised to see such exclusive loyalty of his and started cursing his loyalty again and again. So, Lord! He was truly unique, my brother cannot be compared to anyone.
The Lord said- ‘True loyalty is its name. Exactly the same thing I said to Mr. Ramopasak Murari Gupta and he also gave the same answer. The spirit of a servant should be so solitary and firm that it cannot be shaken by any kind of temptation. Only then the love of God can be attained. In this way, the Lord kept talking to Shri Sanatan ji for a long time. In the end, you went to your place by ordering them to stay there only near Haridas ji and sent Mahaprasad of Shri Jagannath ji for both of them by the hands of Govind. In this way, Sanatan ji started living near Haridas ji in Puri itself. Prabhu used to come regularly to see these two.
Shri Sanatan ji had come to Puri almost in Chaitra month. Instead of going inside the temple for darshan, he used to bow down to the flag of the temple from a distance. Good great men also have to suffer the enjoyment of the body, Sanatan ji’s terrible itch has not healed yet. While scratching, his whole body got big wounds and pus used to flow continuously from them.
It was the month of Jyeshtha. Prabhu had gone to Yameshwar Tota, four-five miles away from Puri. Outside o’clock he called Sanatan also there for alms. There were two ways to go to Yameshwar – one has to go directly by road after going through Singhdwar, the other one can go to Yameshwar along the seashore. The sand on the sea-shore was burning due to the intense sun of Jyeshtha. If raw gram is put in it, it gets roasted and blossoms in a moment. What to speak of a human being in that sand, at twelve o’clock even animals hesitate to go, but when Sanatan ji heard that GOD has called me, then appreciating his fortune, he walked barefoot on the same sandy path to meet GOD. Reached near The body is bound to experience the pleasures and pains of summer and winter. Big blisters appeared on the feet of Sanatan ji. The Lord asked on seeing him – ‘ Hey! Where have you come in this much sun?’ Sanatan ji said with simplicity – ‘ Lord! I have come by way of the beach.’ Looking at the blisters on his feet, the Lord said- ‘Look, your feet got blisters after coming barefoot in the hot sand. Why didn’t you come through the Sinhdwar?’
Sanatan ji said with humility – Lord! Servants and visitors of Shri Jagannath ji keep coming and going through Singhdwar, if I accidentally touch them somewhere, then I will be the partaker of the sin. Due to this fear, I did not come through Singhdwar. The Lord was very pleased to see such dignity, humility and simplicity in him and hugging him tightly, he said – ‘Sanatan! You are blessed, you have understood the true secret of Vaishnavism. Although there is no law-prohibition for you, yet you behave like this for the sake of public dignity, it is the best. No matter how much progress a person makes, he should not transgress the limits. Because breaking the decorum leads to public slander and there is always a fear of downfall due to public slander. Due to the embrace of Sanatan, there was pus in many places on the beautiful gold-like body of the Lord, due to which Sanatan ji felt immense sorrow, he started thinking ‘what to do, God does not accept me without hugging me! That’s why now what will I do by keeping this terrible body. The darshan of the Lord has happened. On the day of Rath Yatra, after seeing Jagannath ji, I will die by being thrown under his chariot!’
Mahaprabhu understood his feelings. One day he came along with the devotees and started talking to Sanatan ji. He said in a few words – ‘Sanatan! What benefit have you thought of leaving the body? The ultimate effort of a man is to attain God, if God can be attained by relinquishing the body, then I am ready to give up the body thousands of times. Leaving the body in this way is a tamasic tendency. Those who get tired of the body due to some reason and give up their life due to worldly heat, they do not get salvation. They then have to assume bodies of demonic nature for the enjoyment of their deeds. The good use of the body is only in chanting Shri Krishna. If you have to adopt the body of demonic nature. The good use of the body is only in chanting Shri Krishna. If God’s name is chanted and remembered, then whatever condition the body may be in, wise men should not care about the body.’
After listening to the Lord, Sanatan ji with his head down said – ‘Lord! What do you want to do with this useless and unholy body by keeping it? Now others don’t get any benefit from this except sorrow.’ The Lord said – ‘What do you care about profit or loss? You have handed over your body to me. Can anyone use a donated item after returning it? I can use it for whatever you want, you don’t have the right to destroy it. With this I have to get big things done.
Sanatan ji said slowly – ‘ Lord! Who has the power to disobey your orders? I will do as you command. In this way, after persuading Sanatan ji, the Lord left for the place along with the devotees. Sanatan ji gave up the idea of suicide, but because of embracing the Lord, he always remained hesitant. They would always stay away from GOD but GOD would find them and embrace them. Due to this, he would always remain upset. One day he told his mental agony to Jagadanand Pandit, who was living near the Lord in Puri. Jagdanand ji said- ‘It is not right for you to stay in Puri. After seeing the Rath Yatra in Ashadh, go directly to Vrindavan from here. God has given you the same country, go to that Prabhudatta country and spend time chanting God’s name.’
Expressing happiness, Sanatan ji said – ‘Pandit ji! You have given this very good advice. After Ashad, I will definitely leave from here.’ With this determination, they started waiting for the Rath Yatra. One day he said to the Lord while talking – ‘ Lord! Pandit Jagadanand ji has given me very beautiful advice. I will go to Vrindavan after traveling in a chariot and stay there. Understanding such feelings of Prabhu Jagadanand, expressing anger of love on him, he said – Jagadanand has now started considering himself a great scholar, who started teaching even Sanatan ji. It is okay if you give us education, Sanatan ji can still teach it for hundreds of years. Fool from somewhere, Calka has gone to give advice to such big people.
Jagdanand ji was stunned after hearing this, there is no blood in the body if you bite! They started looking towards the earth with tearful eyes. Then Sanatan ji held the feet of the Lord in a very humble manner and said – ‘Lord! Jagadanand ji has spoken only for my benefit. Who would not be saddened by the fact that you touch me, the impure? I myself remain narrow.
The Lord again said in the same voice – ‘Why is he so concerned about my body? This body understands everything. He does not know the greatness of Vaishnavas. It considers Sanatan ji’s body as the body of other ordinary people. It does not know, Sanatan ji’s body is Chinmaya. Where is it itching and leprosy? He has created this in his body to test my love so that I should not touch his body out of hatred. If a fortunate person smells the body of Sanatan ji, then divine fragrance emanates from it. I do not hug Sanatan ji for the sake of showering his blessings on him, I make my body pure by touching his body.’
Hearing such a great praise from the mouth of the Lord, Sanatan ji started crying and said – ‘Lord! What heinous crime have I committed, what eternal sins of my births have come to the fore today, that you are giving me this praise-like poison to drink. Jagadanand ji’s fortune has risen today. Today, who will be more fortunate than him in Triloki, whose love and affection is being condemned by the Lord like a son. Oh, blessed are those great men who are blessed with such loving rebuke! Those who are constantly criticized by the teachers, they are the most fortunate men. O Lord, ocean of compassion! By separating this wretch from belongingness with what crime, you forcefully wrapped this serpent of praise around my neck. God! I can’t bear it anymore. ‘ After listening to such kind words of Sanatan ji, the Lord became a little ashamed and looked at Jagadanand ji in a voice of love and said – ‘Jagadanand must have given such consent because of the affection of the dead body and on your request. I must have said such things for them in the heat of my anger. The reason for this is my natural affection for you. You stay here with me this year, go to Vrindavan next year.’ Having said this, the Lord again embraced Sanatan ji with a hug. What was there! Don’t know where the itch and its pain have gone! At the same time his itching got cured and in two-four days his wounds got healed and his body became shining like gold.
At the time of Rath Yatra, Advaitacharya, Nityananda etc. all Gaudiya devotees came to Puri along with their women and children like every year. The Lord introduced Sanatan ji to all of them. Sanatan ji was overjoyed to get the introduction of all these loving devotees who are blessed by the Lord and he bowed down to all of them. Everyone praised Sanatan ji’s devotion, humility and Titiksha. After four months of rain, all the devotees returned to the country, but Sanatan ji remained there. In the second year, after saying goodbye to the Lord and obeying His orders, he reached Vrindavan directly from Puri via Kashi. While leaving Puri, he had written down the names of all the places on the way from Balabhadra Bhattacharya, by which the Lord went to Vrindavan, visiting all those places and remembering the pastimes of the Lord, Sanatan ji reached Vrindavan by the same way. . Till then Shri Roop ji had not reached Vrindavan. Sanatan ji started spending his time there under the trees of Vrindavan. After a few days, Mr. Roop ji also reached Vrindavan from Gaur country and both the brothers together started doing Kalayapan while doing Shri Krishna Katha Kirtan.
