[भज] निताई-गौर राधेश्याम [जप] हरेकृष्ण हरेराम
छोटे हरिदास को स्त्री-दर्शन का दण्ड
निष्किंचनस्य भगवद्भजनोन्मुखस्य
पारं परं जिगमिषोर्भवसागरस्य।
संदर्शनं विषयिणामथ योषितांच
हा हन्त ! हन्त ! विषभक्षणतोऽप्यसाधु।।
सचमुच संसार के आदि से सभी महापुरुष एक स्वर से निष्किंचन, भगवद्भक्त अथवा ज्ञाननिष्ठ वैरागी के लिये कामिनी और कांचन- इन दोनों वस्तुओं को विष बताते आये हैं। उन महापुरुषों ने संसार के सभी प्रिय लगने वाले पदार्थों का वर्गीकरण करके समस्त विषय-सुखों का समावेश इन दो ही शब्दों में कर दिया है। जो इन दोनों से बच गया वह इस अगाध समुद्र के परले पार पहुँच गया और जो इनमें फंस गया वह मंझधार में डुबकियां खाता बिलबिलाता रहा। कबीर दास ने क्या सुन्दर कहा है-
चलन चलन सब कोइ कहे, बिरला पहुँचे कोय।
एक ‘कनक’ अरु ‘कामिनी’ घाटी दुरलभ दोय।।
यथार्थ में इन दो घाटियों का पार करना अत्यन्त ही कठिन हैं, इसीलिये महापुरुष स्वयं इनसे पृथक रहकर अपने अनुयायियों को कहकर, लिखकर, प्रसन्न होकर, नाराज होकर तथा भाँति-भाँति से घुमा-फिराकर इन्हीं दो वस्तुओं से पृथक रहने का उपदेश देते हैं। त्याग और वैराग्य के साकार स्वरूप चैतन्य महाप्रभुदेव जी भी अपने विरक्त भक्तों को सदा इनसे बचे रहने का उपदेश करते और स्वयं भी उन पर कड़ी दृष्टि रखते। तभी तो आज त्यागिशिरोमणि श्रीगौर का यश सौरभ दिशा-विदिशाओं में व्याप्त हो रहा है। व्रजभूमि में असंख्यों स्थान महाप्रभु के अनुयायिकों के त्याग-वैराग्य का अभी तक स्मरण दिला रहे हैं।
पाठक महात्मा हरिदास जी के नाम से तो परिचित ही होंगे। हरिदास जी वयोवृद्ध थे और सदा नाम-जप ही किया करते थे। इनके अतिरिक्त एक-दूसरे कीर्तनिया हरिदास और थे। वे हरिदास जी से अवस्था में बहुत छोटे थे, गृहत्यागी थे और महाप्रभु को सदा अपने सुमधुर स्वर से संकीर्तन सुनाया करते थे। भक्तों में वे ‘छोटे हरिदास’ के नाम से प्रसिद्ध थे। वे पुरी में ही प्रभु के पास रहकर भजन-संकीर्तन किया करते थे।
प्रभु के समीप बहुत-से विरक्त भक्त पृथक-पृथक स्थानों में रहते थे। वे सभी भक्ति के कारण कभी-कभी प्रभु को अपने स्थान पर बुलाकर भिक्षा कराया करते थे। भक्तवत्सल गौर उनकी प्रसन्नता के निमित्त उनके यहाँ चले आते थे और उनके भोजन की प्रशंसा करते हुए भिक्षा भी पा लेते थे। वहीं पर भगवानाचार्य नाम के एक विरक्त पण्डित निवास करते थे, उनके पिता सतानन्द खां घोर संसारी पुरुष थे, उनके छोटे भाई का नाम थो गोपाल भट्टाचार्य। गोपाल श्री काशी जी से वेदान्त पढ़कर आया था, उसकी बहुत इच्छा थी कि मैं प्रभु को अपना पढ़ा हुआ शारीरकभाष्य सुनाऊं, किन्तु वहाँ तो सब श्री कृष्ण कथा के श्रोता थे। जिसे जगत प्रपंच समझना हो और जीव-ब्रह्म की एकता का निर्णय करना हो, वह वेदान्तभाष्य सुन अथवा पढ़े। जहाँ श्री कृष्ण प्रेम को ही जीवन का एकमात्र ध्येय मानने वाले पुरुष हैं, जहाँ भेदाभेद को अचिन्त्य बताकर उससे उदासीन रहकर श्रीकृष्ण कथा की ही प्रधानता दी जाती है, वहाँ पदार्थों की सिद्धि के प्रसंग को सुनना कोई क्यों पसंद करेगा। अत: स्वरूप गोस्वामी के कहने से वे भट्टाचार्य महाशय अपने वेदान्त ज्ञान को ज्यों-का-त्यों ही लेकर अपने निवास स्थान को लौट गये। आचार्य भगवान जी वहीं पुरी में रह गये। उनकी स्वरूप दामोदर जी से बड़ी घनिष्ठता थी। वे बीच-बीच में कभी-कभी प्रभु का निमन्त्रण करके उन्हें भिक्षा कराया करते थे। जगन्नाथ जी में बने-बनाये पदार्थों का भोग लगता है और भगवान के महाप्रसाद को दुकानदार बेचते भी हैं। किन्तु जो चावल बिना सिद्ध किये कच्चे ही भगवान को अर्पण किये जाते हैं, उन्हें ‘प्रसादी’ या ‘अमानी’ अन्न कहते हैं, उस का घर पर ही लोग भात बना लेते हैं। भगवान जी ने घर पर ही प्रभु के लिये भात बनाने का निश्चय किया।
पाठकों को सम्भवत: शिखि माहिती का स्मरण होगा, वे श्री जगन्नाथ जी के मन्दिर में हिसाब-किताब लिखने का काम करते थे, उनके मुरारी नाम का एक छोटा भाई और माधवी नाम की एक बहिन थी। दक्षिण की यात्रा से लौटने पर सार्वभौम भट्टाचार्य ने इन तीनों भाई-बहिनों का प्रभु से परिचय कराया था। ये तीनों ही श्रीकृष्ण भक्त थे और परस्पर बड़ा ही स्नेह रखते थे। माधवी दासी परम तपस्विनी और सदाचारिणी थी। इन तीनों का ही महाप्रभु के चरणों में दृढ़ अनुराग था। महाप्रभु माधवी दासी का गणना राधा जी के गणों में करते थे। उन दिनों राधा जी के गणों में साढ़े तीन पात्रों की गणना थी- (1) स्वरूप दामोदर, (2) राय रामानन्द, (3) शिखि माहिती और आधे पात्र में माधवी देवी की गणना थी। इन तीनों का महाप्रभु के प्रति अत्यन्त ही मधुर श्रीमती जी का-सा सरस भाव था।
भगवानाचार्य जी ने प्रभु के निमन्त्रण के लिये बहुत बढि़या महीन शुक्ल चावल लाने के लिये छोटे हरिदास से कहा। छोटे हरिदास जी माधवी दासी के घर में भीतर चले गये और भीतर जाकर उनसे चावल मांगकर ले आये। आचार्य ने विधिपूर्वक चावल बनाये। कई प्रकार के शाक, दाल, पना तथा और भी कई प्रकार की चीजें उन्होंने प्रभु के निमित्त बनायीं। नियत समय पर प्रभु स्वयं आ गये। आचार्य ने इनके पैर धोये और सुन्दर स्वच्छ आसन पर बैठाकर उनके सामने भिक्षा परोसी। सुगन्धि युक्त बढि़या चावलों को देखकर प्रभु ने पूछा- ‘भगवन ! ये ऐसे सुन्दर चावल कहाँ से मंगाये?’
सरलता के साथ भगवान जी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो ! माधवी देवी के यहाँ से मंगाये हैं।
‘सुनते ही महाप्रभु के भाव में एक प्रकार का विचित्र परिवर्तन-सा हो गया। उन्होंने गम्भीरता के साथ पूछा- ‘माधवी के यहाँ से लेने कौन गया था? ‘उसी प्रकार उन्होंने उत्तर दिया- ‘प्रभो ! छोटे हरिदास गये थे। ‘ यह सुनकर महाप्रभु चुप हो गये और मन-ही-मन कुछ सोचने लगे। पता नहीं वे हरिदास जी की किस बात से पहले से ही असन्तुष्ट थे। उनका नाम सुनते ही वे भिक्षा से उदासीन-से हो गये। फिर कुछ सोचकर उन्होंने भगवान के प्रसाद को प्रणाम किया और अनिच्छापूर्वक कुछ थोड़ा-बहुत प्रसाद पा लिया। आज वे प्रसाद पाते समय सदा की भाँति प्रसन्न नहीं दीखते थे, उनके हृदय में किसी गहन विषय पर द्वन्द्व-युद्ध हो रहा था। भिक्षा पाकर वे सीधे अपने स्थान पर आ गये। आते ही उन्होंने अपने निजी सेवक गोविन्द को बुलाया। हाथ जोड़े हुए गोविन्द प्रभु के सम्मुख उपस्थित हुआ। उसे देखते ही प्रभु रोष के स्वर में कुछ दृढ़ता के साथ बोले- ‘देखना, आज से छोटा हरिदास हमारे यहाँ कभी न आने पावेगा। यदि उसने भूल में हमारे दरवाजे में प्रवेश किया तो फिर हम बहुत अधिक असन्तुष्ट होंगे। मेरी इस बात का ध्यान रखना और दृढ़ता के साथ इसका पालन करना।’
गोविन्द सुनते ही सन्न रह गया। वह प्रभु की इस आज्ञा का कुछ भी अर्थ न समझ सका। धीरे-धीरे वह प्रभु के पास से उठकर स्वरूपगोस्वामी के पास चला गया। उसने सभी वृतान्त उनसे कह सुनाया। सभी प्रभु की इस भीषण आज्ञा को सुनकर चकित हो गये। प्रभु तो ऐसी आज्ञा कभी नहीं देते थे। वे तो पतितों से भी प्रेम करते थे, आज यह बात क्या हुई। वे लोग दौड़े-दौड़े हरिदास के पास गये और उसे सब सुनाकर पूछने लगे- ‘तुमने ऐसा कोई अपराध तो नहीं कर डाला जिससे प्रभु इतने क्रुद्ध हो गये? ‘इस बाते के सुनते ही छोटे हरिदास का मुख सफेद पड़ गया। उसके होश-हवास उड़ गये। अत्यन्त ही दु:ख और पश्चात्ताप के स्वर में उसने कहा- ‘और तो मैंने कोई अपराध किया नहीं, हाँ, भगवानाचार्य के कहने से माधवी दासी के घर से मैं थोड़े-से चावलों की भिक्षा अवश्य माँग लाया था।’
सभी भक्त समझ गये कि इस बात के अंदर अवश्य ही कोई गुप्त रहस्य है। प्रभु इसी के द्वारा भक्तों को त्याग-वैराग्य की कठोरता समझाना चाहते हैं। सभी मिलकर प्रभु के पास गये और प्रभु के पैर पकड़कर प्रार्थना करने लगे- ‘प्रभो ! हरिदास अपने अपराध के लिये हृदय से अत्यन्त ही दु:खी हैं। उन्हें क्षमा मिलनी चाहिये। भविष्य में उनसे ऐसी भूल कभी न होगी। उन्हें दर्शनों से वंचित न रखिये।’
प्रभु ने उसी प्रकार कठोरता के स्वर में कहा- ‘तुम लोग अब इस सम्बन्ध में मुझसे कुछ भी न कहो। मैं ऐसे आदमी का मुख देखना नहीं चाहता जो वैरागी वेष बनाकर स्त्रियों से सम्भाषण करता है।’ अत्यन्त ही दीनता के साथ स्वरूपगोस्वामी ने कहा- ‘प्रभो ! उनसे भूल हो गयी, फिर माधवी देवी तो परम साध्वी भगवदभक्ति परायणा देवी हैं, उनके दर्शनों के अपराध के ऊपर इतना कठोर दण्ड न देना चाहिये।’
प्रभु ने दृढ़ता के साथ कहा- ‘चाहे कोई भी क्यों न हो ! स्त्रियों से बात करने की आदत पड़ना ही विरक्त साधु के लिये ठीक नहीं। शास्त्रों में तो यहाँ तक कहा है कि अपनी सगी माता, बहिन और युवती लड़की से भी एकान्त में बातें न करनी चाहिये। ये इन्द्रियाँ इतनी प्रबल होती हैं कि अच्छे-अच्छे विद्वानों का मन भी अपनी ओर आकर्षित कर लेती हैं।’ प्रभु का ऐसा दृढ़ निश्चय देखकर और उनके स्वर में दृढ़ता देखकर फिर किसी को कुछ कहने का साहस नहीं हुआ।
हरिदास जी ने जब सुना कि प्रभु किसी भी तरह क्षमा करने के लिये राजी नहीं हैं, तब तो उन्होंने अन्न-जल बिलकुल छोड़ दिया। उन्हें तीन दिन बिना अन्न-जल के हो गये, किन्तु प्रभु अपने निश्चय से तिलभर भी न डिगे। तब तो स्वरूपगोस्वामी जी को बड़ी चिन्ता हुई। प्रभु के पास रहने वाले सभी विरक्त भक्त डरने लगे। उन्होंने नेत्रों से तो क्या मन से भी स्त्रियों का चिन्तन करना त्याग दिया। कुछ विरक्त स्त्रियों से भिक्षा ले आते थे, उन्होंने उनसे भिक्षा लाना ही बन्द कर दिया। स्वरूप गोस्वामी डरते-डरते एकान्त में प्रभु के पास गये। उस समय प्रभु स्वस्थ होकर कुछ सोच रहे थे। स्वरूप जी प्रणाम करके बैठ गये। प्रभु प्रसन्नता पूर्वक उनसे बातें करने लगे। प्रभु को प्रसन्न देखकर धीरे-धीरे स्वरूपगोस्वामी कहने लगे- ‘प्रभो ! छोटे हरिदास ने तीन दिन से कुछ नहीं खाया है। उसके ऊपर इतनी अप्रसन्नता क्यों? उसे अपने किये का बहुत दण्ड मिल गया, अब तो उसे क्षमा मिलनी चाहिये।’
प्रभु ने अत्यन्त ही स्नेह के साथ विवशता के स्वर में कहा- ‘स्वरूप जी ! मैं क्या करूं? मैं स्वयं अपने को समझाने में असमर्थ हूँ। जो पुरुष साधु होकर प्रकृति संसर्ग रखता है और उनसे सम्भाषण करता है, मैं उससे बातें नहीं करना चाहता। देखो, मैं तुम्हें एक अत्यन्त ही रहस्यपूर्ण बात बताता हूँ इसे ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो और सुनकर हृदय में धारण करो, वह यह है –
श्रृणु हृदयरहस्यं यत्प्रशस्तं मुनीनां
न खलु न खलु योषित्सन्निधि: संनिधेय:।
हरति हि हरिणाक्षी क्षिप्रमक्षिक्षुरप्रै:
पिहितशमतनुत्रं चित्तमप्युत्तमानाम्।।[1]
मैं तुमसे हृदय के रहस्य को बतलाता हूँ जिसकी ऋषि-मुनियों ने भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा की है, उसे सुनो; (विरक्त पुरुषों को) स्त्रियों की सन्निधि में नहीं रहना चाहिये, नहीं रहना चाहिये, क्योंकि हरिणी के समान सुन्दर नेत्रों वाली कामिनी अपने तीक्ष्ण कटाक्ष-बाणों से बड़े-बड़े महापुरुषों के चित्त को भी, जो शान्ति के कवच से ढँका हुआ है, शीघ्र ही अपनी ओर खींच लेती है। इसलिये भैया ! मेरे जाने, वह भूखों मर ही क्यों न जाय अब मैं जो निश्चय कर चुका उससे हटूँगा नहीं। ‘स्वरूप जी उदास मन से लौट गये।
उन्होंने सोचा- ‘प्रभु परमानन्दपुरी महाराज का बहुत आदर करते हैं, यदि पुरी उनसे आग्रह करें तो सम्भवतया वे मान भी जाये। ‘यह सोचकर वे पुरी महाराज के पास गये। सभी भक्तों के आग्रह करने पर पुरी महाराज प्रभु से जाकर कहने के लिये राजी हो गये। वे अपनी कुटिया में से निकलकर प्रभु के शयन स्थान में गये। पुरी को अपने यहाँ आते देखकर प्रभु उठकर खड़े हो गये और उनकी यथा विधि अभ्यर्चना करके उन्हें बैठने के लिये आसन दिया। बातों-ही-बातों में पुरी जी ने हरिदास का प्रसंग छेड़ दिया और कहने लगे- ‘प्रभो ! इन अल्प शक्ति वाले जीवों के साथ ऐसी कड़ाई ठीक नहीं है। बस, बहुत हो गया, अब सबको पता चल गया, अब कोई भूल से भी ऐसा व्यवहार न करेगा। अब आप उसे क्षमा कर दीजिये और अपने पास बुलाकर उसे अन्न-जल ग्रहण करने की आज्ञा दे दीजिये।’
पता नहीं प्रभु ने उसका और भी पहले कोई ऐसा निन्द्य आचरण देखा था या उसके बहाने सभी भक्तों को घोर वैराग्य की शिक्षा देना चाहते थे। हमारी समझ में आ ही क्या सकता है ! महाप्रभु पुरी के कहने पर भी राजी नहीं हुए। उन्होंने उसी प्रकार दृढ़ता के स्वर में कहा- ‘भगवान ! आप मेरे पूज्य हैं, आपकी उचित-अनुचित सभी प्रकार की आज्ञाओं का पालन करना मैं अपना कर्तव्य समझता हूँ, किन्तु न जाने क्यों, इस बात को मेरा हृदय स्वीकार नहीं करता। आप इस सम्बन्ध में मुझसे कुछ भी न कहें।’
पुरी महाराज ने अपने वृद्धपने के सरल भाव से अपना अधिकार-सा दिखाते हुए कहा- ‘प्रभो ! ऐसा हठ ठीक नहीं होता, जो हो गया सो हो गया उसके लिये इतनी ग्लानि का क्या काम? सभी अपने स्वभाव से मजबूर हैं।’
प्रभु ने कुछ उत्तेजना के साथ निश्चयात्मक स्वर में कहा- ‘श्रीपाद ! इसे मैं भी जानता हूँ कि सभी अपने स्वभाव से मजबूर हैं। फिर मैं ही ही इससे कैसे बच सकता हूँ। मैं भी तो ऐसा करने के लिये मजबूर ही हूँ। इसका एक ही उपाय है, आप यहाँ सभी भक्तों को साथ लेकर रहें, मैं अकेला अलालनाथ में जाकर रहूँगा। बस, ऊपर के कामों के निमित्त गोविन्द मेरे साथ वहाँ रहेगा। ‘यह कहकर प्रभु ने गोविन्द को जोरों से आवाज दी और आप अपनी चद्दर को उठाकर अलालनाथ की ओर चलने लगे। जल्दी से उठकर पुरी महाराज ने प्रभु को पकड़ा और कहने लगे- ‘आप स्वतन्त्र ईश्वर हैं, आपकी माया जानी नहीं जाती। पता नहीं क्या कराना चाहते हैं। अच्छी बात है, जो आपको अच्छा लगे वही कीजिये। मेरा ही यहाँ क्या रखा है? केवल आपके ही कारण मैं यहाँ ठहरा हुआ हूँ। आपके बिना मैं यहाँ रहने ही क्यों लगा? यदि आपने ऐसा निश्चय कर लिया है तो ठीक है। अब मैं इस सम्बन्ध में कभी कुछ न कहूँगा।’ यह कहकर पुरी महाराज अपनी कुटिया में चले गये, प्रभु फिर वहीं लेट गये।
जब स्वरूपगोस्वामी ने समझ लिया कि प्रभु अब किसी की भी न सुनेंगे तो वे जगदानन्द, भगवानाचार्य, गदाधर गोस्वामी आदि दस-पांच भक्तों के साथ छोटे हरिदास के पास गये और उसे समझाने लगे- ‘उपवास करके प्राण गँवाने से क्या लाभ? जीओगे तो भगवन्नाम-जाप करोगे, स्थान पर जाकर न सही, जब प्रभु जगन्नाथ जी के दर्शनों को जाया करें तब दूरसे दर्शन कर लिया करो। उनके होकर उनके दरबार में पड़े रहोगे तो कभी-न-कभी वे प्रसन्न हो ही जायँगे। ‘ कीर्तनिया हरिदास जी की समझ में यह बात आ गयी, उसने भक्तों के आग्रह से अन्न-जल ग्रहण कर लिया। वह नित्यप्रति दर्शनों को मन्दिर जाते समय दूर से दर्शन कर लेता और अपने को अभागा समझता हुआ कैदी की तरह जीवन बिताने लगा। उसे खाना-पीना कुछ भी अच्छा नहीं लगता था, किसी से मिलने की इच्छा नहीं होती थी, गाना-बजाना उसने एकदम छोड़ दिया। सदा वह अपने असद व्यवहार के विषय में ही सोचता रहता। होते-होते उसे संसार से एकदम वैराग्य हो गया। ऐसा प्रभुकृपाशून्य जीवन बीताना उसे भार-सा प्रतीत होने लगा। अब उसे भक्तों के सामने मुख दिखाने में भी लज्जा होने लगी। इसलिये उसने इस जीवन का अन्त करने का दृढ़ निश्चय कर लिया।

Truly, from the beginning of the world, all the great men have been calling both the things of Kamini and Kanchan as poison for the nishkinchan, devotee of Bhagavad or the renunciate of knowledge. Those great men have classified all the dear things of the world and included all the subjects and pleasures in these two words only. The one who escaped from these two reached the other side of this deep ocean and the one who got stuck in them kept on wailing while taking dips in the middle of the ocean. What a beautiful saying by Kabir Das-
Everyone says that everyone is walking, few people have reached. One ‘Kanak’ and ‘Kamini’ valley are rare two.
In reality, it is very difficult to cross these two valleys, that’s why great men themselves stay away from them and preach to their followers to stay away from these two things by saying, writing, being happy, being angry and moving around in different ways. Chaitanya Mahaprabhudev, the embodiment of renunciation and disinterest, always used to advise his disinterested devotees to stay away from them and himself kept a strict watch on them. That’s why today the fame of Tyagishiromani Shrigaur is spreading in every direction. Countless places in Vrajbhoomi are still reminding us of the renunciation and renunciation of Mahaprabhu’s followers.
Readers must be familiar with the name of Mahatma Haridas ji. Haridas ji was an old man and always used to chant his name. Apart from these, there were other Kirtanya Haridas and others. He was much younger than Haridas ji, was a householder and used to recite Sankirtan to Mahaprabhu always in his melodious voice. He was famous among the devotees as ‘Chhote Haridas’. He used to do bhajan-sankirtan by staying near the Lord in Puri itself.
Many detached devotees lived in different places near the Lord. Because of all their devotion, sometimes they used to invite the Lord to their place and get them alms. Bhaktavatsal Gaur used to come to his place for the sake of his happiness and used to get alms praising his food. There used to live a disinterested Pandit named Bhagwanacharya, his father Satanand Khan was a very worldly man, his younger brother’s name was Gopal Bhattacharya. Gopal had come after studying Vedanta from Shri Kashi ji, he had a great desire to narrate his body language to the Lord, but there everyone was listening to Shri Krishna’s story. One who wants to understand the world and decide the unity of Jiva-Brahman, should listen to or read Vedanta Bhashya. Where Shri Krishna is a man who considers love as the only goal of life, where the importance of the story of Shri Krishna is given by being indifferent to discrimination, why would anyone like to listen to the context of material achievements. Therefore, at the behest of Svarupa Gosvami, Bhattacharya Mahasaya returned to his abode with his Vedanta knowledge intact. Acharya Bhagwan ji stayed there in Puri. He had great intimacy with Swaroop Damodar ji. Sometimes in between, he used to invite the Lord and make him do alms. Prepared things are offered to Jagannath ji and shopkeepers also sell Lord’s Mahaprasad. But the rice which is offered to God raw without being perfected, is called ‘Prasadi’ or ‘Amani’ food, and people make rice at home. Bhagwan ji decided to make rice for the Lord at home.
Readers would probably remember Shikhi Mahiti, who used to do the work of writing accounts in Shri Jagannathji’s temple, he had a younger brother named Murari and a sister named Madhavi. Sarvabhaum Bhattacharya had introduced these three brothers and sisters to the Lord on his return from the journey to the South. All these three were devotees of Shri Krishna and had great affection for each other. Madhavi Dasi was the ultimate ascetic and virtuous. All these three had strong affection at the feet of Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu used to count Madhavi Dasi in the count of Radha ji. In those days, three and a half characters were counted in Radha ji’s ganas- (1) Swaroop Damodar, (2) Rai Ramanand, (3) Shikhi Mahiti and Madhavi Devi was counted in half character. All three of them had very sweet Mrs.ji’s sarcasm towards Mahaprabhu. Bhagwanacharya asked little Haridas to bring very fine fine white rice for the invitation of the Lord. Chhote Haridas ji went inside Madhavi Dasi’s house and went inside and asked for rice from her. Acharya methodically prepared rice. He made many types of vegetables, pulses, panna and many other things for the sake of the Lord. The Lord himself came at the appointed time. Acharya washed his feet and served alms in front of him by making him sit on a beautiful clean seat. Seeing the nice rice with fragrance, the Lord asked – ‘ God! Where did you get such beautiful rice from?’
With simplicity Bhagwan ji said – ‘ Lord! Ordered from Madhavi Devi’s place.
‘ On hearing this, there was a kind of strange change in Mahaprabhu’s attitude. He asked seriously – ‘Who had gone to pick up Madhavi from here? ‘ In the same way he replied – ‘Lord! The younger Haridas had gone. ‘ Hearing this, Mahaprabhu became silent and started thinking something in his mind. Don’t know about what he was already dissatisfied with Haridas ji. On hearing his name, he became indifferent to alms. Then thinking something, he bowed down to the Lord’s offerings and reluctantly got some little offerings. Today, while receiving Prasad, he did not look as happy as usual, a duel was going on in his heart on some deep subject. After receiving alms, he came straight to his place. As soon as he arrived, he called his personal servant Govind. Govind appeared before the Lord with folded hands. On seeing him, the Lord said with some firmness in the voice of anger – ‘Look, from today onwards little Haridas will never be able to come to our place. If he entered our door by mistake, then we would be very much dissatisfied. Take care of this thing of mine and follow it with firmness.
Govind was stunned on hearing this. He could not understand any meaning of this order of the Lord. Slowly he got up from the Lord and went to Swaroopgoswami. He narrated all the incidents to them. Everyone was surprised to hear this terrible order of the Lord. The Lord never used to give such orders. He used to love even the fallen, what happened today? Those people ran to Haridas and told him everything and started asking – ‘Haven’t you committed any crime that made the Lord so angry? Little Haridas’s face turned white on hearing this. He lost his senses. In a voice of extreme sorrow and remorse, he said – ‘And I have not committed any crime, yes, I had definitely brought some rice as alms from Madhavi Dasi’s house on the advice of Bhagwanacharya.’
All the devotees understood that there must be some hidden secret in this matter. Through this, the Lord wants to explain the harshness of renunciation and disinterest to the devotees. Everyone together went to the Lord and started praying holding the feet of the Lord – ‘Lord! Haridas is deeply saddened at heart for his crime. He should be forgiven. He will never make such a mistake in future. Don’t deprive them of darshan.’
In the same way, the Lord said in a harsh tone – ‘ Now you people should not say anything to me in this regard. I don’t want to see the face of a man who disguises himself as a renunciate and talks to women.’ Swaroop Goswami said with utmost humility – ‘Lord! They made a mistake, then Madhavi Devi is the ultimate Sadhvi Bhagavadbhakti Parayana Devi, such a harsh punishment should not be given for the crime of seeing her.
The Lord said with firmness – ‘No matter what! Getting into the habit of talking to women is not good for a disinterested monk. It has even been said in the scriptures that one should not even talk to one’s own mother, sister and young girl in private. These senses are so strong that they attract the minds of even the best scholars.’ Seeing such determination of the Lord and seeing the firmness in his voice, then no one had the courage to say anything.
When Haridas ji heard that the Lord was not ready to forgive in any way, then he completely gave up food and water. They went without food and water for three days, but the Lord did not waver even a tad from his determination. Then Swaroop Goswami ji got very worried. All the disinterested devotees living near the Lord started getting scared. He has given up thinking about women not only with his eyes but also with his mind. Some estranged women used to bring alms, they stopped bringing alms from them. Swaroop Goswami fearfully went to the Lord in solitude. At that time the Lord was thinking something after being healthy. Swaroop ji bowed down and sat down. The Lord happily started talking to him. Seeing the Lord pleased, Swaroopgoswami slowly started saying – ‘Lord! Little Haridas has not eaten anything for three days. Why so much displeasure over him? He got a lot of punishment for his actions, now he should be forgiven.
With great affection, the Lord said in a voice of compulsion – ‘Swaroop ji! What shall I do? I am unable to explain myself. I don’t want to talk to a man who, being a saint, keeps contact with nature and talks with him. Look, I am telling you a very mysterious thing, listen to it carefully and keep it in your heart after listening, that is –
Listen to the secret of the heart which is praiseworthy to the sages Not indeed, not indeed, a woman’s presence is to be approached. For the deer-eyed one quickly takes away the bees and the sword. The mind of the closed calm body is also the best of the best.
I will tell you the secret of the heart, which has been highly praised by sages, listen to it; (Men who are disinterested) should not stay in the company of women, should not stay, because with her sharp sarcasm-arrows, the mind of great men, which is covered with the armor of peace, can be easily destroyed by the female sex. It only pulls you towards itself. That’s why brother! I don’t know why he may die of hunger. Now I will not deviate from my decision. Swaroop ji returned with a sad heart.
He thought- ‘Prabhu respects Parmanandpuri Maharaj very much, if Puri requests him, then he might agree. ‘ Thinking this, he went to Puri Maharaj. On the request of all the devotees, Puri Maharaj agreed to go and tell the Lord. They came out of their cottage and went to the sleeping place of the Lord. Seeing Puri coming to his place, the Lord stood up and offered him a seat to sit after worshiping him according to the method. While talking, Puri ji started the context of Haridas and started saying – ‘Lord! Such strictness is not right with these low powered creatures. Enough is enough, now everyone has come to know, now no one will behave like this even by mistake. Now forgive him and call him near and allow him to have food and water.’
I don’t know whether the Lord had seen any such reprehensible behavior of his before or on the pretext of that he wanted to teach extreme disinterest to all the devotees. What can we understand! Mahaprabhu did not agree even on Puri’s suggestion. He said in the same voice of determination – ‘ God! You are my worshipper, I consider it my duty to obey all your orders, right or wrong, but I don’t know why, my heart does not accept this. You don’t say anything to me in this regard.’ Puri Maharaj, showing his authority in the simple sense of his old age, said – ‘Lord! Such stubbornness is not right, what is the use of so much guilt for what happened, happened? All are compelled by their nature.
With some excitement the Lord said in a determined voice – ‘Shripad! I also know that everyone is compelled by his nature. Then how can I be saved from this? I too am compelled to do so. There is only one solution for this, you take all the devotees here with you, I will stay alone in Alalnath. Just, Govind will be there with me for the above works. ‘ Saying this, the Lord gave a loud voice to Govind and you picked up your cloak and started walking towards Alalnath. Waking up early, Puri Maharaj caught hold of the Lord and said – ‘You are an independent God, Your illusion is not known. Don’t know what you want to do. Good thing, do what you like. What is mine here? It is only because of you that I am staying here. Why did I stay here without you? If you have made up your mind, then fine. Now I will never say anything in this regard.’ Saying this, Puri Maharaj went to his cottage, Prabhu again lay down there.
When Swarupgoswami understood that the Lord would no longer listen to anyone, he went to little Haridas along with ten-five devotees like Jagadananda, Bhagwanacharya, Gadadhar Goswami etc. and started explaining to him – ‘What is the benefit of losing life by fasting? If you live, you will chant God’s name, if you don’t go to the place, when you go to see Lord Jagannath, then have darshan from a distance. If you stay in his court after being him, he will be happy at one time or the other. ‘ Keertania Haridas ji understood this, he took food and water on the request of the devotees. While going to the temple for daily darshans, he used to have darshans from a distance and considering himself unfortunate, started living like a prisoner. He didn’t like eating or drinking anything, didn’t want to meet anyone, he completely stopped singing and playing. He always used to think about his bad behavior. Gradually, he became completely disinterested in the world. Living such a life devoid of God’s grace seemed like a burden to him. Now he felt ashamed even to show his face in front of the devotees. That’s why he made up his mind to end this life.
