माँ दुर्गाजी की आठवीं शक्ति का नाम महागौरी है। इनका वर्ण पूर्णत: गौर है। इस गौरता की उपमा शंख, चन्द्र और कुंद के फूल से दी गयी है | इनकी आयु आठ वर्ष की मानी गयी है – ‘अष्टवर्षा भवेद गौरी’ | इनके समस्त वस्त्र एवं आभूषण आदि भी श्वेत हैं | इनकी चार भुजाएँ हैं | इनका वाहन वृषभ है | इनके ऊपर के दाहिने हाथ में अभय-मुद्रा और नीचेवाले दाहिने हाथ में त्रिशूल है | ऊपर वाले बायें हाथ में डमरू और नीचे के बायें हाथ में वर-मुद्रा है | इनकी मुद्रा अत्यन्त शान्त है |
आपने पार्वती रूप में इन्होने भगवान् शिव को पति-रूप में प्राप्त करने के लिये बड़ी कठोर तपस्या की थी | इनकी प्रतिज्ञा थी कि ‘व्रियेअहं वरदं शम्भुं नान्यं देवं महेश्वरात |’ (नारद पांचरात्र) | गोस्वामी तुलसीदास जी के अनुसार भी इन्होने भगवान् शिव के वरण के लिये कठोर संकल्प लिया था –
जन्म कोटि लगि रगर हमारी |
बरऊँ संभु न त रहऊँ कुँआरी ||
इस कठोर तपस्या के कारण इनका शरीर एकदम काला पद गया | इनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न और संतुष्ट होकर जब भगवान् शिव ने इनके शरीर को गंगाजी के पवित्र जल से मलकर धोया तब वह विद्युत् प्रभा के समान अत्यन्त कान्तिमान – गौर – हो उठा | तभी से इनका नाम महागौरी पड़ा |
दुर्गापूजा के आठवें दिन महागौरी की उपासना का विधान है | इनकी शक्ति अमोघ और सदय:फलदायिनी है | इनकी उपासना से भक्तों के सभी कल्मष धुल जाते हैं | उसके पूर्वसंचित पाप भी विनष्ट हो जाते हैं | भविष्य में पाप-संताप, दैन्य-दु:ख उसके पास कभी नहीं आते | वह सभी प्रकार से पवित्र और अक्षय पुण्यों का अधिकारी हो जाता है |
माँ महागौरी का ध्यान-स्मरण, पूजन-आराधन भक्तों के लिये सर्वविध कल्याणकारी है | हमें सदैव इनका ध्यान करना चाहिये | इनकी कृपा से अलौकिक सिध्दियों की प्राप्ति होती है | मन को अनन्यभाव से एकनिष्ठ कर मनुष्य को सदैव इनके ही पादारविन्दों का ध्यान करना चाहिए | ये भक्तों का कष्ट अवश्य ही दूर करती हैं | इनकी उपासना से आर्तजनों के असम्भव कार्य भी सम्भव हो जाते हैं | अत: इनके चरणों की शरण पाने के लिये हमें सर्वविध प्रयत्न करना चाहिये | पुराणों में इनकी महिमा का प्रचुर आख्यान किया गया है | ये मनुष्य की वृतियों को सत की ओर प्रेरित करके असत का विनाश करती हैं | हमें प्रपतिभाव से सदैव इनका शरणागत बनना चाहिये |

, Om Sri Paramatmane Namah: The name of the eighth power of Maa Durga is Mahagauri. Their character is completely noticeable. This glory is likened to the conch, the moon and the flower of the Kunda. His age is considered to be eight years – ‘Ashtavarsha Bhaved Gauri’. All their clothes and jewelery etc. are also white. They have four arms. His vehicle is Taurus. He has Abhaya Mudra in his upper right hand and Trishul in his lower right hand. There is a Damru in the upper left hand and Vara-mudra in the lower left hand. Their posture is very calm. In the form of Parvati, she had done severe penance to get Lord Shiva in her husband’s form. His promise was ‘Vriyaaham Varadam Shambhu Nanyam Devam Maheshwarat’ (Narad Pancharatra). According to Goswami Tulsidas ji also he had taken a strict resolution for the selection of Lord Shiva – Our birth order seems to be ours. Don’t be a virgin. Due to this severe penance, his body became completely black. Pleased and satisfied with his penance, when Lord Shiva washed his body with the holy water of Gangaji, then he became very bright like an electric light. Since then her name was Mahagauri. There is a law to worship Mahagauri on the eighth day of Durga Puja. Their power is unfailing and kind: fruitful. By worshiping her, all the impurities of the devotees are washed away. His pre-accumulated sins are also destroyed. In future, sin-sorrow, misery and sorrow never come to him. He becomes the possessor of holy and inexhaustible virtues in all respects. The meditation-remembrance, worship-worship of Maa Mahagauri is all-encompassing for the devotees. We should always meditate on them. By their grace, supernatural abilities are attained. One should always meditate on his own devotees by making the mind one-sided with exclusive devotion. It definitely removes the sufferings of the devotees. By worshiping them, even the impossible tasks of the artisans become possible. Therefore, we should make every effort to take refuge at their feet. His glory has been described abundantly in the Puranas. They destroy the unreal by motivating the human instincts towards the true. We should always take refuge in them out of influence.
